The area was first settled in 1794 by the Ashbridge family, whose name is remembered by the nearby bay and park. Their homestead on Queen Street East was well to the west of the area currently identified as the Beaches. A later generation of the Ashbridge family rebuilt the family home in 1854 and can be seen on Queen Street East opposite the TTC barns near Kingston Road.
The Beaches remained a sparely settled community until the end of the 19th century when extension of the Grand Truck Railway, the draining of the northern parts of Ashbridges Bay, and the construction of street car tracks on Queen Street and Kingston Road, opened the area to settlement.
From Sunnyside Amusement Park built in 1922 to Scarboro Beach built in 1906, it seemed that Toronto cornered the market on summertime chills and thrills.
We had 5 major amusement parks along our waterfront, and two smaller parks, Victoria Park and Munro Park, virtually unknown to Torontonians today, but extremely popular summertime places, years ago as pleasure parks.
This walking tour is for all walking levels and fitness skills. Please dress for the season and bring water. And remember to bring your love of history.
It begins outside the Beaches Branch of the Toronto Public Library at Queen Street East, and Lee Avenue adjacent to Kew Gardens. The tour ends at the Neville Park Queen Street Streetcar Loop.
This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person.

Camping at High Falls on Eels Creek Fri Apr 17 to Sun Apr 19
This trip is organized by James at [Ontario Backcountry Camping](https://www.meetup.com/ontariobackcountry/).
To register go to:
[Camping at High Falls on Eels Creek, Fri, Apr 17, 2026, 12:00 PM | Meetup](https://www.meetup.com/ontariobackcountry/events/313823145/?eventOrigin=group_upcoming_events)
Canoe, Kayak, or hike to High Falls on Eels Creek, 2 hours from Toronto.
**The meeting location and put-in is the parking lot on Northeys Bay Road. Coordinates are 44.58821797620266, -78.07077482325549**
This is a short 20-30 minute paddle up Eels Creek (or 5KM hike) for a spring camping trip. Stay for one night or two, up to you. There is some fast moving water at the start which we can portage around if the current is too strong, after that it's an easy paddle. We will setup camp close to the falls or on the small lake close by. There is a hiking trail from the parking lot to the falls but may not be easy this time of year due to high water on a creek crossing. If you want to hike in, that is an option, but waders might be a good idea.
Explore the trail or portage your boat up the falls and continue upstream for a paddle. I was here 10+ years ago; there is a really nice waterfall, some rapids upstream which I was able to paddle through, and some petroglyphs on the rocks along side the creek. I have not hiked the trail but I hear it's a good hike. This is crown land so camping is free.
You can try the hike, bring a canoe/kayak, have a paddle partner with a canoe, or arrange a shuttle to camp. The paddle is short so we could make multiple trips. I will be canoeing in on Friday.
Be prepared for the weather.

Wilder Series: The Wilder Loop
**Please note the only way to register for this adventure is on [our website.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/wilder-loop-26)**
**Welcome to the original Wilder Series adventure- a very challenging hike through a wild, secret location.**
The Wilder Loop is 20 km of remote, rugged terrain through one of Ontario’s most untouched landscapes. Right from the start, the trail throws you into the wild: the first 5 km have everything we love about backcountry hiking; twisting forest paths, sweeping granite ridges, narrow boardwalks, and multiple beaver dams to scramble across. No two kilometers are the same, and every twist in the trail feels like a secret waiting to be found.
Once we hit the loop section, things get much quieter. This part of the park sees very few visitors as human footprints give way to moose tracks, and the rustling in the brush might just be one of the many beavers that call this area home.
Though the total elevation gain is relatively modest (about 260 m over the whole route), the trail’s difficulty comes from its remoteness, terrain, and ever-changing conditions. That said, for those willing to take it on, the reward is huge: sweeping views, total solitude, an unfiltered experience of Ontario’s boreal beauty... and a well-earned sense of pride by the time we make it back to the trailhead.
***Secret Location***
This is one of Wilderness Union's 'secret' hikes. As a group, we visit some truly special spots that are undiscovered by the wider world. We like to keep them pristine and only share them among our members- we ask that you do the same! We reveal the location to registered members in the days before the trip.
**Highlights**
**Untouched Wilderness-** Step into a landscape that feels frozen in time; wild, windswept, and wonderfully remote. Just you, the forest, and the sound of your boots on the trail.
**Wildlife Spotting -** Bears, moose, beavers and loons are just some of the creatures that call this area home. You'll have a chance to spot some from a safe distance for a magical encounter.
**Beaver Dam Crossings -** The area we're visiting is shaped by beavers. Tiptoe across nature’s original bridges- muddy, meticulously built, and surprisingly sturdy.
**Event cost: $60+HST - optional transport available.**
**Register [here.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/wilder-loop-26)**
**About Wilderness Union**
Wilderness Union is deliberate about building an outdoors community that connects you to the life-changing magic of the outdoors and helps you find your people.
Members range from 20-40 years old. The group is a mix of GTA locals and newcomers to Toronto from within Canada and abroad.
Attendance numbers on Meetup don't reflect our actual event attendance - we typically have 15-20 community members at each event. Large enough that there's someone new to meet but small enough that it's not overwhelming!

COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above.
There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change.
The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/).
Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers.
For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
