D&D 5E One Shot - Obojima Tales from the Tall Grass
D&D 5E One Shot - Obojima Tales from the Tall Grass
**PLEASE READ:** This event will show as sold out on meetup since this event has a limit of 5 spaces and tend to book up. You can **SECURE** your seat through purchasing a ticket on https://lvlupgames.ca/products/rpg-one-shot-obojima-tales-from-the-tall-grass in advance. **If you can add it to cart on the site that means the spot is still available!** Hello adventurers! Do you enjoy cozy games such as Stardew Valley or Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Welcome to the mysterious and cozy island of Obojima! Inspired heavily by Studio Ghibli films such as Kiki’s Delivery Service and Spirited Away, as well as the fantasy adventures of Legend of Zelda, Obojima brings would-be adventurers to a much more relaxed and lower stakes adventure. Enjoy the beautiful rolling hills, magical hot springs, adorable nature spirits, and uncover the mysterious technology left behind by the First Civilization. Whether it's helping the local farmers with some mischievous spirits or accompanying archeologists to an ancient temple; Obojima’s adventures are perfectly described as “cozy fantasy”. This is a 3 hour Dungeons and Dragons Obojima session for those who have already participated in the learn to play, or players that already know the mechanics of D&D 5th edition! **Please ensure you are available for your chosen date before you purchase your ticket.** Every **month** will be a **new** adventure from Obojima Tales from the Tall Grass book! **Game Master:** Nick (He/Him) Nick, has been a Dungeon Master for 10 years, experienced in many mainstream and indie RPG systems. Outside of RPGs, Nick has several years of theatre experience, being an actor in his youth and continuing his studies even now. He is upbeat and theatrical, standing and acting out dramatic action sequences and quiet emotional scenes. More than anything, Nick always tries his best to deliver an experience, something that will be a special memory for everyone. **What is 5th Edition and how does it differ from 5.5 Edition?** Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition is an older version that was released in 2017 where 5.5 is the most current edition (released in 2024) with some changes to game mechanics. Most third party campaigns are made for 5th edition mechanics. So if you would like to play any D&D campaigns prior to 2024 (the majority of them) 5th edition would be your go-to! If you are interested in the 5.5 Edition we have a Dragon Delves learn-to-play series available as well. Due to the limited spaces available for this event, we will not be issuing refunds for this event **less than 48 hours before the event**. Be sure to purchase the ticket for the correct date.

Beyond Copilot: Agentic Java Development with Claude Code - Victor Szoltysek
Beyond Copilot: Agentic Java Development with Claude Code - Victor Szoltysek
Most Java developers have tried AI-assisted coding through chat interfaces or inline autocomplete. Useful — but limited. In this talk, we’ll explore the next step: agentic Java development using Claude Code. Instead of treating AI as a smarter text box, we’ll look at what changes when the model can reason across files, plan multi-step changes, interact with tools, and operate closer to how real developers work. This will be a practical, experience-driven session focused on: • How agentic coding differs from ChatGPT-style prompting and traditional Copilot usage • Where Claude Code fits (and where it doesn’t) in real Java projects • How tools, context, and workflows matter more than “prompt tricks” • How to avoid unstructured vibe coding while still moving faster No prior experience with agentic tools is required. The goal isn’t to sell a silver bullet — it’s to help Java developers understand what’s genuinely new, what’s hype, and how these tools can be used responsibly in real-world codebases. **About the venue** Free Times Cafe has bistro-style seating and a full food and drink menu. Please consider helping to support the venue by planning to have supper during the talk. **Speaker Bio** Victor Szoltysek is a seasoned consultant and technologist, currently at RAVL, where he helps clients eliminate the inefficiencies of undifferentiated heavy lifting and focus on building solutions that drive real business value for their customers. With a career spanning notable organizations like Accenture, Pivotal, and ThoughtWorks, as well as numerous startups, Victor brings a wealth of experience in cloud transformations, DevOps enablement, and Agile software development. A dedicated Java enthusiast with a sharp eye for cutting-edge technologies, Victor’s work frequently intersects with AWS, where he strives to streamline workflows and help teams leverage the cloud without unnecessary complexity. Recently, he’s also ventured into the dynamic world of artificial intelligence, exploring ways to make programming more engaging, efficient, and rewarding. Victor is known for his humorous and sometimes controversial presentation style, ensuring lively discussions and thought-provoking takeaways. His disdain for overly complex tech solutions drives his mission to simplify the way we build and deploy software. Whether he’s sharing insights about Java, AWS, or AI, Victor’s talks are as energizing and satisfying as your favorite cup of coffee. Don’t miss his unique blend of wit, wisdom, and deep technical expertise at our meetup!

When Norm Violations Come Out of the Shadows
When Norm Violations Come Out of the Shadows
This talk will explore what happens to public discourse when previously restrictive norms against blatant falsehood and overt racism start to erode. Are there still efforts to conceal? Do new mechanisms arise? What changes in audiences and communicative environments allow for these shifts, and how can one push back against them? Jennifer Saul https://uwaterloo.ca/philosophy/profiles/jennifer-saul Professor Department of Philosophy University of Waterloo **About the Speaker:** Jenny's primary interests are in Philosophy of Language, Pragmatics, Feminism, Philosophy of Race, and Philosophy of Psychology. In recent years, much of her work has been on deception and racism in political speech. Her book *[Dogwhistles and Figleaves: How Manipulative Language Spreads Racism and Falsehood](https://global.oup.com/academic/product/dogwhistles-and-figleaves-9780192871756?cc=ca&lang=en&) has recently been published by Oxford University Press*. It explores certain commonalties in the communicative mechanisms that have allowed politicians to get away with much more obvious falsehood and racism than previously thought possible. Jenny has also published *Lying, Misleading and What is Said: An Exploration in Philosophy of Language and in Ethics* (Oxford University Press 2012). It argued that considering the distinction between lying and misleading-- which seems to many an ethically significant one-- can help to shed new light on methodological disputes in philosophy of language over notions like what is said, semantic content, implicature, and the semantic/pragmatic distinction more generally. Jenny was Director of the Leverhulme-funded Implicit Bias and Philosophy Project. She has published[ two co-edited volumes](https://global.oup.com/academic/product/implicit-bias-and-philosophy-volumes-1-and-2-9780198766186?cc=ca&lang=en&) on implicit bias with Michael Brownstein, and she continues to lecture widely on this topic to a range of audiences. She is especially interested in helping institutions find methods to combat implicit biases, and she frequently advises on this topic. Her view is that [structural and institutional solutions are the most effective means of doing this](https://www.timeshighereducation.com/blog/implicit-bias-training-often-flawed-shouldnt-be-scrapped), and she works with the institutions at which she speaks to improve their policies and procedures. **\* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \* \*** This is a talk with audience Q&A presented by the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics that is free to attend and open to the public. The talk will also be streamed online with live chat here [to be posted]. About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca): The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. The Centre seeks to bring together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life. In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society. The Ethics of A.I. Lab at the Centre For Ethics recently appeared on a list of 10 organizations leading the way in ethical A.I.: https://ocean.sagepub.com/blog/10-organizations-leading-the-way-in-ethical-ai

Book Launch: The Iron Garden Sutra by A.D. Sui
Book Launch: The Iron Garden Sutra by A.D. Sui
You are invited to the book launch of A.D. Sui's new novel, *The Iron Garden Sutra*! There will be a live recording of the *murmurstations* podcast, along with a reading, Q&A, and book signing. Soup will be provided! **Book Summary:** Klara and the Sun meets S. A. Barnes’s Dead Silence with a touch of Becky Chambers’ A Psalm for the Wild-Built in Nebula Award-winning author A.D. Sui’s darkly philosophical murder mystery, as a death monk and a team of researchers trapped onboard a spaceship of the dead encounter something beyond human understanding. Vessel Iris has devoted himself to the Starlit Order, performing funeral rites for the dead across the galaxy and guiding souls back into the Infinite Light. Despite the comfort he wants to believe he brings to the dead, his relationships with his fellow Vessels are distant at best, leaving him reliant on his AI construct for companionship. The spaceship Counsel of Nicaea has been lost for more than a thousand years. A relic of Earth’s dying past, humanity took the ship to the stars on a multi-generation journey to find another habitable planet yet never reached its destination. Its sudden appearance has attracted a team of academics eager to investigate its archeological history. And Iris has been assigned to bring peace to the crew’s long departed souls. Carpeted in moss and intertwined with vines, Nicaea is more forest than ship. But the ship's plant life isn’t the only sentience to have survived in the past millennia. Something onboard is stalking the explorers one by one. And Iris with his AI construct may be their only hope for survival. . .

In-Person Writing Sprints
In-Person Writing Sprints
Struggling with motivation and focus as you hammer away on your manuscript at home? Want to join a community of writers as we embrace the joys and pains (mostly pains) of writing together? Bring your laptop, pen & paper, old-school typewriter, or futuristic writing gadget, and join an enthusiastic community of science fiction and fantasy writers as we work on our current projects in the same space. The format will be similar to our online writing sprints: 30-minute blocks of focused, quiet writing time (the sprints), interspersed with breaks where we can chat, ask questions, and share our writing experiences.

Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Shut Up & Write! Kingsdale Shopping Center
Greetings writers! Come down and join your fellow wordsmiths for one hour of uninterrupted writing time in the upper level of the Market District Supermarket in Upper Arlington. The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo. Writing is largely a solitary craft. Practicing with others in a community setting may be the thing you need to fire your own routine. We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, starting the clock at 6:30, following a brief period of introductions. This is solid writing time and all inclusive. Any project is acceptable, be it fiction, non -fiction, work or homework assignment. All is welcome and will remain private to you. The market boasts a Starbucks, a full service bar and various affordable food options. Parking is plentiful, free Wifi is provided as well as outlets for charging your devices, though they are somewhat limited, so plan accordingly. Show up as early as you like, or stay late. This group tends to socialize some, both before and after the alloted time, but this is not mandatory to you. Feel free to come and go as you please and late arrivals are welcome. The cafe may be noisy on occasion so headphones/ earbuds are reccommended as you see fit. Please try to RSVP if possible so that we may grab enough seats for all—the venue can be busy at times. Feel free to message me privately wth any questions and/ or concerns you may have. Happy writing!
