**What will you experience?**
**Seaside living, the rustic style**: 2 easy yet scenic coastal hikes, 1 night camping by the sea, learn some basic survival skills & cook your own dinner with team effort.
**INTRODUCTION**
The Selantai and Pulau Mawar hike in Mersing, Johor, is a short yet scenic coastal trail renowned for its dramatic rock formations, crystal-clear blue waters, and tranquil, untouched beaches. The route passes through coastal shrubs, sandy stretches, and rocky outcrops before reaching the iconic **“Heaven’s Gate (天堂之门)”** rocks at Pulau Mawar—one of the area’s most photogenic spots. It’s an easy-to-moderate hike suitable for beginners, offering beautiful sunrise views and a peaceful, nature-rich escape by the sea.
**[Drone video of Heaven's Gate: CLICK](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DBu_W4OSp_N/)**
People flock to Pulau Mawar undoubtedly for the Heaven’s Gate view – a huge rock arch that opens to the view of the South China Sea. In Malay, it is also known as Gerbang Laut or in Chinese, “天堂之门”, which means “Door to Heaven”. Don’t be deceived by the photo; the actual rock arch is a lot bigger than it looks.
**=> [Read more here](https://1step1footprint.com/pulau-mawar-heavens-gate/)**
Pulau Mawar is located at the tip of Pantai Mawar beach, just a 30-minute drive north of Mersing Town/Jetty. Many years ago, it was indeed an island separated by a small strait from the mainland. However, after years of alternating high and low tides, a sandbank forms, connecting Pantai Mawar to Pulau Mawar. So, it is not a *Pulau,* an island anymore – totally accessible on foot!
**Bukit Selantai** is a short but rewarding coastal hill hike known for its sweeping sea views and peaceful natural setting. The trail climbs gently through light forest and rocky terrain before opening up to panoramic vistas of the coastline, offshore islands, and turquoise waters. Suitable for beginners with a moderate fitness level.

Walk, Chat, Explore: Geylang Serai, Joo Chiat & Katong
Join us as we explore the Geylang Serai, Joo Chiat and Katong districts!
We will start by walking a short stretch of Geylang Serai, where the Hari Raya Bazaar has been set up. It would be of particular interest to foodies looking to snack on local tit bits, or those who would like to get knick knacks, or to just soak in the atmosphere.
We will then walk down the historic Joo Chiat Road, which has become popular in recent times with Instagrammers for its cool murals and restored old architecture.
But the locals know that it has much more than that, and we will zig zag our way through the side streets and alleys to find hidden sites, historical places, old-school shops and, favourite local eateries, pass through the "Little Vietnam" area, admire the Peranakan architectures, and also other notable sights.
At Katong, we will be rewarded by another laid-back area with some historic buildings and scenes.
We will stop by a Peranakan place for those interested in
tit-bits.
Just a minute up from there and we would be at Marine Parade Road, where the sea used to come up to ages ago. Do you know that there are still signs of the former seafront here?
After, all that walking and it would be natural to re-energize and at one of the food places. We will head to the famous Marine Parade Central Hawker Centre to fill up and chit-chat.
Those are looking for a final relaxation of the day can then head to the beach, which is just at the back, to sit by the sea and chat or meditate while listening to the waves.
**Meeting Point**: Kinex Shopping Mall **front lobby** at corner of Tanjong Katong Road and Geylang Road. (Old name: One KM Mall).
**Mall address:** 11 Tanjong Katong Road Singapore 437157. It is a short 3 min walk from Paya Lebar MRT. Many bus stops nearby.

Celebrate National Chip and Dip Day!
***Okay, call me crazy but you have got to try their chip n dip!*** Club 185 is a true hidden gem in German Village! Seriously, old school, good comfort food and drink. We will try to gather in spaces near the windows. While we'll share Chip n Dip, you'll want to order a sandwich, too.
**Where the Chip Began (1817)**
Potato chips can be traced back to an English chef, William Kitchiner, who includes ‘crisps’ in his bestselling cookbook, “The Cook’s Oracle.”
**Chip and Dip Popularity**
The popularity of chip and dip skyrockets at the end of World War II with new entertainment fads and the introduction of Lipton’s new advertising campaign for their famous French Onion Dip. (Club 185 doesn't openly admit it, but I'm pretty sure that's their dip recipe!)
**[Club 185](http://club185.com/)**—a true neighborhood bar serving since 1954, when it was known as a local 'speak-easy'. Located in German Village, Club 185 features a menu of quality casual comfort food and full bar. From politicians to lawyers, hardhats to hipsters—all find Club 185 the perfect place to tame their hunger and quench their thirst!
**PARKING**: I know, brick street parallel parking can be a pain. Two other choices, metered parking along Livingston heading towards Children's Hospital or across the street in the large church lot (park in spaces farthest away from the church entrance doors, closer to the street).
**PRE-EVENT**: **HAPPY HOUR (3-5pm)**: Italian drinks and bites at [Cento's happy hour](https://centogermanvillage.com/menus/), nearby.
Sharon Woods HIKE
Meet in the Maple Grove Picnic area. If trail conditions are poor, we will use the Multipurpose Path.
Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM.
It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!
Dining at Cafe Istanbul
Join me at 3 for dining, at Cafe Istanbul, on Easton.
Cafe Istanbul in Easton, Columbus, Ohio, is a Turkish and Mediterranean restaurant known for its authentic cuisine, including various kebabs (lamb, chicken, beef), falafel, and appetizers like Sigara Borek, served in a uniquely decorated setting reminiscent of old Istanbul. It offers a full bar, takeout, and reservations, with popular dishes like lamb shish kebab, doner kebab, and vegetarian options like moussaka.
One thing this group doesn't seem to do a lot of is dine out. This is an opportunity for those that like to eat over a meal and connect to do so.
