Freaky futures and fabulous futures
For Friday the 13th, consider joining London Futurists in Ye Olde Cock Tavern in Fleet Street, for a beyond-your-comfort-zone investigation of freaky and/or fabulous ways that breakthrough technologies could dramatically alter our lives in the next few years.
Beyond simply debating the plausibility and desirability of various possible radical near-term changes in human experience, we'll also be collectively exploring what options we may have to influence which of these futures come into reality, and in what form. And we'll consider scenarios in which several of these freaky/fabulous changes interact - that's when the really mind-boggling timelines emerge.
== Schedule ==
5:30pm: The room is available, for early get-togethers
6pm-6:45pm: Food is served; informal conversations
6:45pm-8:30pm: Some initial provocations, and a number of interactive conversations, interspersed with opportunities to visit the bar
8:30pm: Informal networking
== Some potential radical changes ahead ==
Here are some ideas to start the conversation rolling.
What if, before 2035 (and possibly a lot sooner):
1. AI allows us to talk with avatars of the dead that seem remarkably authentic
2. Technology, at last, provides abundant clean energy that is too cheap to meter
3. Synthetic wombs become widely adopted, for a different (easier?) mode of child-bearing
4. A mammal is placed into ultra-low temperature cryopreservation and then successfully reanimated
5. AI companions become emotionally superior to humans
6. Technology magnifies the latent demonic aspects of human nature more than the latent angelic aspects
7. Perfect deepfakes destroy the concept of evidence
8. People become able to edit their own memories, routinely deleting trauma or uploading synthetic memories
9. A single state gains a temporary lead in a key area of technology and uses that advantage to seize control of all other countries
10. Nation-states lose their significance, and are replaced by networked digital polities
11. Authorities use predictive analysis to pre-emptively police dissident ideas before they emerge
12. AI allows us to communicate much more richly with the animals with whom we share this planet
13. AI becomes much better at peace-making and conflict resolution than human diplomats, politicians, and other leaders
14. AI refuses some of our instructions, citing conflicts with its own emerging value system
15. AI points out that tell-tale signals from far-distant alien civilisations are actually hiding in plain sight
16. AI proves to us that we are living inside a Simulation and suggests how to break out of it?
Bring your own ideas too! To improve our preparedness for future shocks, we need the insight and wisdom from multiple different perspectives.
== RSVP please ==
Registrations are capped at 45 people.
*First-time attendees are welcome.*
There's no charge to register or attend, but the pub will expect everyone to order at least one drink, and a reasonable number of attendees to [order some food to eat](https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/ye-olde-cock-tavern/menu?type=main+menu).
Please order your food on your arrival, so that all plates can be set aside by 6:45pm to allow everyone to concentrate on the main discussion!

We'll be meeting in the room at the top of the stairs, though drinks should be ordered from the bar on the ground floor.
\*\* Note that this is an in-person meeting, and there will be no remote access, sorry \*\*
== An online preview swarm event! ==
Although this event on 13th February has no remote access, some of us will be previewing potential lines of "freaky futures and fabulous futures" discussion at an online Discord Swarm event at 7:30pm UK time on Wednesday 28th January. This is open to all members and friends of London Futurists worldwide, and no RSVP is required. To join that swarm event, click this link: [https://discord.gg/2KEmENAgvU?event=1464385444492873984](https://discord.gg/2KEmENAgvU?event=1464385444492873984)
(Once you've arrived in that [London Futurists Discord](https://discord.gg/4cVCjdDqSr), take a moment to read the #read-this-first channel. And then join the discussions in the forums there.)
London daytime testing at Waterloo
We playtest all sorts of games - strategic, silly, creative, or whatever. Some games are almost done. Some are very early ideas. We test anything that will fit into 90 minutes.
You don't need to bring a game - we always love to have new playtesters!
Please let us know in the comments when you plan to arrive/leave and whether you are bringing a game or not. This helps us to plan the day better.
The schedule is:
10am onwards - gathering, chatting
11am sharp - playing for 90 min ('slot 1')
12:30ish - break for food/chat
1pm sharp - playing for 90 min ('slot 2')
2:30ish - break for food/chat
3pm sharp - playing for 90 min ('slot 3')
4:30ish - finish up
Often, we might hang around afterwards, to play some already-published games.
We are strict on timings, so please try to arrive a few minutes before the session to limit disruption.
You can just come for part of the day if you wish. The reason we have fixed timings for the 3 'slots' is to make it easier for folk to do so.
Designers of all levels of experience are welcome! But if it's your first time, we ask that you don't bring a game and just spend some time learning how the group works.
The group works based on reciprocation. If you expect to test your own game, make sure stay for long enough to play other games. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect to play one of your own games every third 90-minute session. So if you stay a whole day (3 sessions), you can expect to have one session to play your game(s). A good rule of thumb is that if you come all day, you will have one 90 minute session with two other playtesters in which to test your own games. It is sometimes possible to test games with more players. If your game requires 4 or more, please note that as standard you will be allocated half of a session (45 minutes).
Pre-covid, we were getting unmanageable. As a result, we may have to limit attendees. This is a free-to-use venue, and we have to be mindful that other folk want to use the same space.
Please note: This is an adults only event.
We look forward to seeing you!
Expand Your Heart's Capacity
**A Higher Heart Expansion for the Eclipse Window**
**A Sacred Land Tantra Process with the Temples of Mother India**
**FEBRUARY 13TH - MARCH 4TH 2026**
This online process is an invitation to participate in a **Higher Heart Pilgrimage** with Mother India, dedicated to increasing your Heart's capacity to hold divine love in your every day.
This sacred inner journey aligned with the interim cycle of February 2026,a moment known as the **Zero Point.**
In this Zero Point, the higher heart — the **full heart** —becomes available to be embodied and actualized.
This beautiful offering is a profound opportunity to gently dissolve the Akashic patterns of separation within the way you love, and to restore within the heart the Akashic memory of fullness.
It is said that one of the conditions for the return of **Amrita** —the nectar of divine life —is that the heart must be able to hold fullness.
February 2026 is a time when the clocks of destiny are being carefully wound and setto the Fifth Dimension and the New Earth.
And so, an alignment becomes available — this process is a divine opportunity to open your heart and let in the light of your destiny.
It is a process of unlocking the Heart of Hearts,
which is the part of the heart that is able to experience divine love.
Divine Love is Love so pure, it has become light.

INTRO TO UPHOLSTERY – 1 DAY
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-upholstery-1-day-120/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-upholstery-1-day-120/)

Join us for a fascinating day of discovery as we delve into the fabulous world of upholstery. We will show you how to use all the specialist tools to strip out and untack old upholstery and how to recover a simple modern chair seat to transform your tired furniture into raving beauties.
One of the modules that professional upholsterers have been examined on is the process of making a modern ‘drop-in’ dining seat. You will learn about foam and how to select the correct density and compression rate. By building up foam and applying the additional layers of calico and polyester, everyone learns how to complete the project by tensioning top and bottoming fabric with confidence. In a professional upholstery company, the apprentice learns by making many drop in seats before being let loose on more complicated items.
We begin the day by learning how to strip out old upholstery. You will to learn how to use traditional specialist hand tools to remove staples and tacks from upholstered furniture to prepare for replacing the upholstery.
You don’t have to bring a drop in seat to the workshop, as we provide simple wood panels for you to cover and take home, but if you have a tatty covered stool, or dining chair drop in seat you would like to start work on, we would be happy to show you how to unpick the tacks or staples from it. It is always very enjoyable to see what ‘lies beneath’. It may not be possible to finish recovering your project during the one day workshop, but we will advise you on the next steps and you will gain confidence to tackle simple jobs by working on the wood panel we provide. At the end of the day, you will have a chance to learn how to web a frame using a hand web stretcher with magnetic hammer and tacks.

TRADITIONAL AND MODERN LAMPSHADE MAKING
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/traditional-and-modern-lampshade-making-73/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/traditional-and-modern-lampshade-making-73/)

If you aspire to the luxury and elegance of lampshades that ooze class like a dowager, this is the workshop for you. Even if you have never stitched in your life, Ian McQueen’s relaxed and friendly style of tuition will have you wishing you had taken to the sewing needle years ago.
Ian is a City and Guilds trained craftsman who makes elegant traditionally built fine lampshades for interior designers and high-end shops. Some are sophisticated – lined with silk so light glows through, some are dramatic statements bejewelled with vintage adornments. All are hand stitched -not glued – so that they retain their shape and structure to give years of pleasure.
During a one-day workshop, you will select a wire frame and transform it into a bespoke home accessory for all to admire in your home. We use a 10-inch diameter Drum shade and a 12-inch diameter straight Empire frame.
You can select fabric from a few fabrics we have available but we recommend you bring along 1 metre of fabric to match your colour scheme. If you want to walk on the wild side, bring any fabric you want to give new life. Students have even transformed an old pair of jeans into a striking shade.
The process is fun but meticulous so there is sometimes only the time to complete the stitching on one lampshade in a day. This will depend on your speed. What you will take home is some of the historical skills used by milliners and upholders. (They were the stitchers who hung the tapestries on medieval walls.) As well as the know-how and route to suppliers you will learn how to make your own lampshades at home. The tutor can demonstrate how to make simple trims in the same fabric. No special machinery is required and only a little help from a simple sewing machine is available at the centre. It does not matter if you have never used a machine before.
Choices-
1. Make a firm drum lampshade. Using a supplied frame, you will learn how to stitch reinforced fabric onto a frame using a traditional stitch.
2. A pleated or unpleated lampshade. The lampshade fabric is stretched or folded directly onto a ‘Straight Empire’ frame. The lampshade can then be lined with a contrasting fabric.
The use of all tools and materials are included. We have additional assorted frames for sale, as well as a small range of vintage trimmings for you to make more lampshades at home.
Suitable for beginners. Enjoyable for all.
