Neighborhood Gems: Authentic Indian Dishes at Pink Saffron
Our NEIGHBORHOOD GEMS series features emblematic meals from around the world. This series shines a light on local restaurants and is designed to bring together inquisitive foodies and dishes that are unique and oh so worth a trip on roads less traveled!
Join us for authentic Indain dishes at ***Pink Saffron***!
**From Northern Virginia Magazine**
In his native India, Shashank Chatrapati grew up near a bakery. But his favorite treat sounds more like something out of his adopted home of Virginia: biscuits. "They were cooked in a wooden oven," Chatrapati recalls of the lightly sweet bread.
As a chef with 15 years of experience, he and co-founder Ankush Kumar opened Pink Saffron in Westpost at National Landing in November 2025. When they did, Chatrapati tried the biscuit recipe he remembered, complete with nutty filling, but baked it in the restaurant's tandoor. The result is a heat blistered, oily delight that's a cousin to naan, but with a trademark twist.
The goal at Pink Saffron is to serve cuisine that would play well in India. Spice levels are slightly higher than most area Indian restaurants, and dishes are mostly of the variety that diners won't find elsewhere in the United States.
Chatrapati mentions Bengali dab chingari - a helping of tiger prawns cooked inside a coconut - as a favorite. Inside the tandoor, the fresh young coconut combines with mustard paste, creating a seafood stew.
But event those who order familiar classics like butter chicken and biryani will be greeted with new flavors. "On our menu, it's called romesco butter chicken because of the high-quality tomatoes,"explains Chatrapati. He adds high-grade cashews and blends them with the signature Pink Saffron mix of the eponymous stamen and rosewater.
"When you eat out butter chicken, it will give you this different taste from any other butter chicken you get anywhere else," says Chatrapati.
Even the dessert menu includes several options diners won't likley see without a trip to India. The double ka meetha is a delight for fans of bread pudding; it's simultaneously comforting and novel. Descended from the royal cuisine of Indian Muslim rulers, the sweet features crispy ghee-fried bread in a floral condensed milk mixture called rabdi - which also serves as a base for black gulab jamun - in a startingly pretty treat.
Whatever diners choose to order at the new restaurant, they can bet that saffron, rose and freshly ground spices will make it taste like nothing else!
**Check out the menu** [here](https://thepinksaffron.com/food-menu)
Separate checks will be arranged in advance. All diners will settle their own tabs.
We ask that ALL folks honor their RSVP. If you are unable to attend after sending in a YES, please update your status so that others may join and help us support local businesses. In the event our group incurs a fee for no-shows / late cancellations, your ability to RSVP for future events will be restricted. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
To enhance the opportunity for great conversation, we will continue to limit the group size. Please feel free to sign-up to meet us along with up to 2 friends.
**\*\*** **WAITLIST:** Meetup does not allow waitlists for paid events. *If this event fills and you would like to be added to the waitlist, please send a note to the host through the Meetup app. **\*\****
In the future, we will vary the days of the week and the types of restaurants to keep events interesting.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE COMMITTED TO GO WHEN YOU RSVP FOR THIS EVENT. Feel free to make suggestions for future meet locations.
\*\* The small non-refundable registration fee helps us share the cost associated with the Meet-Up platform ($360/yr) and reduces the likelihood of no-shows, allowing us to better plan our events and accommodate all participants. Meetup charges $0.51 and Paypal charges $0.53 on the $2 registration fee. Thanks in advance for your understanding!\*\*
If you are unable to join us in April, we hope you'll stay interested and join us for a meal in the future. Looking forward to catching up with you for a delightful dinner at Pink Saffron!
Glendening Nature Preserve: A 5.3 Mile Easy Side of Moderate Hike
**Glendening Nature Preserve: A 5.3 Mile Easy Side of Moderate Hike**
**SEE IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON REGISTRATION UNDER "NOTES."**
Nestled near Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Glendening Nature Preserve is a little gem within the larger Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary. This 620-acre preserve offers a scenic 5.3-mile hike characterized by its easy-to-moderate terrain.
The hike begins at The Plummer House, a restored farmhouse active up to 2007. On the grounds are classic farm structures, including a striking old red barn that adds a touch of rustic beauty to the landscape. In the warmer months, visitors can enjoy a vibrant butterfly garden, home to over 90 plant species and more than 45 butterfly species. The garden is also the hub of a phenology citizen science monitoring project, typically coming alive each April.
The preserve's trail system winds through a remarkable array of habitats. Hikers will traverse open meadows with wildflowers, navigate serene pine and sand barrens, and wander through upland forests. Interspersed throughout are streams that eventually feed into the scenic Patuxent River, offering plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing and moments of quiet reflection. One of the preserves's standout features is a 460-foot boardwalk that stretches through the wetlands, leading hikers to Old Galloway Creek and a view of the Patuxent River.

Thursday Evening 3.0 and above at Woodley Gardens Park! (Doubles Format)
Please do not arrange to play earlier than the scheduled start time UNLESS you are able to stay till the end of the event, we do not want people leaving early and creating uneven numbers.
Hello members,
Tennis has become much more popular since the pandemic started and court space has been harder to come by. Following these simple rules will help everyone get the most out of MoCo Topspinners Meetup.
• If you RSVP for an event, please attend that event or cancel at least two hours before the event starts. Members that no-show will receive one warning then will be benched (suspended) from events for two weeks. Three no-shows can result in a permanent ban. (No-shows create uneven numbers and prevent folks on the waitlist from playing. Please do your part to un-RSVP as soon as you know that you cannot attend an event.)
• Members must have a way to communicate with organizers and hosts. This can be through the Meetup app messages or by providing other contact info.
• Any member can ask a host or organizer to have their skill rated for event attendance purposes. You will not be allowed to participate in events higher than your NTRP rating. (We may try to limit numbers or have multiple events on a given day to accommodate players of different skill levels and also to help alleviate the court availability problem).
• All members shall conduct good sportsmanship and be courteous to other members at all times.
• Sexual harassment, racism, sexism or any kind of intolerance will not be tolerated and will result in the permanent ban from the group.
• If member receives three warning infractions, the member will be suspended from the Meetup for a period of one month. If a member is suspended twice (six warnings), that member will be permanently banned and any membership dues will then be forfeited.
• If you are scheduling to play with others outside of a MoCo Topspinners event, and you know that there is a MoCo Topspinners event scheduled for that day at that time, please try to use courts other than the courts where the event is scheduled, or move your time so that it does not conflict with the Topspinners event.
For a list of complete rules and definitions you can see the MoCo Topspinners front page. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are hoping for a fun season but we may have to wait for courts and leave earlier than we are used to. Please be patient as we adjust to this new normal and try a few different things that will hopefully help the situation. Happy playing!
If you would like to attend this event you must be a of minimum 3.0 level. USTA guidelines prior for signing up for the Meetup: https://assets.usta.com/assets/1/15/ExperiencedGuidelines_02142011_V2pdf.pdf
Singles and doubles game play flexible depending on court availability.
If you have any questions, please feel free to drop the group organizers a message.
Looking forward to a great 2021 season- see you on the courts!
• What to bring
Tennis Balls and Racket, Water.

AZALEA Outing: Stroll Brighton Dam Azalea Garden | Lunch
**\*\*Tuesday, April 21 UPDATE\*\***
Members, we currently have **35 attendees** that would overwhelm the parking lot so I **highly recommend CARPOOLING** where possible.
If interested, note your origin and route in Comments.
**\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\***
Social Sips & Bites Family,
I've organized the outing below for another Meetup for several years.
**Please indicate via COMMENT if you will be attending the LUNCH.**
**BTW: Pets** are **not permitted** at the Garden.
\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*
This is a **road trip** (>30 miles / \~50 minutes from West Falls Church Metro) for our mostly VA-based Meetup.
It is organized in 2 segments so members can participate in one, or both activities.
I chose a Sunday to make it easier to car pool from, say, a Metro Station.
The date is always a guess so the date may change based on azaleas blooming close to me.
**1\. Stroll/Explore the Brighton Dam Azalea Garden at Brighton Dam\.** **FREE.**
The azalea garden is situated on the banks of the Patuxent River, by Brighton Dam (built in 1942).
**The 5 acre garden has over 20,000 azaleas and is provided by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. 20k!!!**
The trails are crushed asphalt (soft vs. gravel) and grass so wear appropriate footwear.
Note: The garden is along a river bank so the upper part does rise meaning a hill.
**Parking:** A good amount of it across the road at the main Brighton Dam Recreation Area Parking Lot, but this will likely be popular so carpooling is recommended.
FREE.
***Carpooling*** \- For those that wish to carpool\, please indicate in comments that you would and from where\.
**2\. Lunch/Picnic\.**
In a prior year, we had **lunch** at Brookeville Beer Farm.
It was an overcast, chilly day so the patio heaters were a godsend.
This year, I'm **initially picking**:
**Z Burger & Maman Joon Kabob** \- good variety\, plenty of seating\, individual counter ordering to minimize the hassle of separate checks\.
However, small parking lot though they told me overflow can go to the 7-Eleven next door.
I have several signed up already in the other Meetup so can take about 8 more as the venue has minimal parking though a good amount of seating.
**Please indicate via COMMENT if you will be attending the LUNCH**
**.**

-Upper Rock Creek Park (incl. Lake Needwood Public Archery Range)
