This week we'll look at the first chapter of [Science and Human Values](https://sciencepolicy.colorado.edu/students/envs_5110/bronowski_1956.pdf), by Jacob Bronowski. In this work Bronowski contends that science is not merely a technical method, but instead is grounded in the same philosophical principles which characterise an open society. These values include honesty, freedom, and tolerance of uncertainty and, he argues, abandoning them leads to intellectual and moral disaster. Please read the chapter before attending.

THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED FOR NOW, BUT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, YOU CAN REGISTER YOUR INTEREST WITH ME AND I WILL LET YOU KNOW IF A SPACE FREES UP Hi, in this workshop, we will learn to make the famous "galette des rois", eaten on the 6th of january everywhere in France. We will prepare the frangipane, and also learn how to make the southern French "couronne des rois". We will then go and taste one of them upstairs while admiring the view. The event is free in itself, but I will charge for the ingredients. It should not exceed £10/ person. Please note, the event will only run if there are at least 3 people coming. We will cook together (in French of course) in our beautiful 56th floor kitchen, and then we will share one frangipane together, discuss the tradition and converse in French and you can take the one (or two!) you made home! You are welcome to bring a drink if you like, we have glasses and everything necessary.

You probably heard or may know a French tradition called Galette des Rois? It is a very iconic cake in France for Epiphany and it is a unique tradition there!!! The tradition is to eat this cake for Epiphany day - and actually for the whole month of January. More than eating a great cake, it is about to "tirer les rois". In the iconic cake, there is a charm (originally a bean) in and the one who gets it gets the crown, and then gets luck for the year! Wanna experience it? Join us chez Antoinette, a French cafe in Covent Garden! We will talk a bit about this tradition, we will eat a piece of cake and we will chat all in French. It is a French conversation session as well. Found on YouTube by searching " Renoir 2012" is this most sumptuous drama set in the French Riviera in 1915. Jean Renoir who late become the famed film director returns to the home of his artist father Pierre- Auguste to convalesce after he is wounded in World War 1. They are joined by the enchanting Andree Heuschling who becomes a muse for both father and son. Made in 2012 and lasts almost two hours. In French with English subtitles.

Our January program is privileged to have Kristen Tregar as our speaker. Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below: Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2013, in collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded *The Ireland Project*, an intercontinental devised theatre work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. The topic for January is "Chemistry" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 7:00 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human.
