The goal of our first meeting is to get to know eachother and practice Italian and German. Please don’t be afraid that your language skills might not be sufficiently good or that you are a beginner. We understand that learning languages is a difficult and long journey. We don’t tolerate discrimination. We don't tolerate any aggressive or weird attitude. Following the success and satisfaction of the group's meeting two weeks ago, I am pleased to announce the next meetup. For this meetup, on the eve of the Summer Solstice, our initial topic of discussion will be simply On Money: how wealth, oligarchy, and money in general have been viewed across different civilisations, and whether one can have a functioning civilisation without some concept of money. We'll start with short introductions from everyone attending. The focus will be on historical, scientific and philosophical discussion rather than contemporary political debate. Another June event! As I search for a new regular venue, we will be hopping around Berlin's black-owned venues and cool events this summer! So... Let's join this official Fete de la Musique event. A curated journey through Berlin's contemporary art galleries delving into different media and painting techniques while offering deep insights into the creative process. Beginning with the historical Wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, the tour examines the origins of collection and display, questioning the hierarchy between collector and collected and challenging traditional systems of classification. It then turns to contemporary approaches to documentation and preservation, exploring how galleries continue to select, organize, and legitimize what is considered worth remembering while raising questions about responsibility once exhibitions end. An afternoon bookclub, organized by our member Patrick Rutledge. Let’s meet and wander the galleries! General admission on Sundays is free. We'll be meeting in the sculpture garden area at the meeting time, which is just outside the cafe area by the main entry. We meet to learn and practice American Sign Language and to grow our familiarity with Deaf culture. Facilitated by hearing folks (with a connection to a professional interpreter) using Deaf-created content. People of all ASL skill levels are welcome! As we learn, we hope to connect more with the Deaf community in Central Ohio. Join us as you're able! Come regularly or just once - whatever you're looking for! Our June read is ***Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible*** ***Voyage*** **by Alfred Lansing.** A work of nonfiction, and one of the most astonishing survival stories in history, we follow Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew after their ship is crushed by Antarctic ice. Stranded in one of the harshest environments on Earth, the men endure months of isolation, freezing temperatures, and near starvation—yet refuse to give up hope. Lansing brings their ordeal to life through vivid detail and firsthand accounts, capturing both the brutality of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, the story is a powerful testament to leadership, perseverance, and the unbreakable will to survive against impossible odds. Looking forward to discussing with everyone! Register for a hands-on art making workshop at the Octagon Earthworks, led by Newark Earthworks Center experts Marti Chaatsmith and Megan Cromwell, along with Ohio State’s 2025–26 Artist Laureate, Kate Shannon. The workshop will take place on June 22, 2026, 10 am - 2 pm (rain date: June 29th, 10 am - 2 pm) at 125 N. 33rd St. Newark, OH 43055. Ages 14 and up are invited to participate The cyanotype is a simple photographic process that uses sunlight and water to produce vivid blue images. During the workshop, participants will learn about the Octagon Earthworks before exploring the grounds to create place-based prints inspired by Hopewell culture Select prints created during the workshop will be featured in a subsequent exhibition at the Newark Earthworks Storyteller Gallery, on view from July 13 to August 28, 2026.
