Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy the weather! We meet Saturdays at 10am, halfway between the Reston *Container Store* and *Not Your Average Joes* (by the metal benches), leaving no later than 10:05.
Every week, rain or shine, we start by walking along the Green Trail to reach Lake Anne Community Center. Once there, we pause for water/bio (often staying a few minutes extra from April-November, due to the local Farmer's Market), and then we circle Lake Anne and head back to our starting point. It's roughly 3-4 miles and takes about an hour and a half.
Afterwards, some members will often head to *Not Your Average Joes* or another local restaurant for a quick drink/meal before tackling the day.
This event is open to all ages and fitness levels. Dogs are welcome, and we recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll walk rain or shine. Also, feel free to bring a friend!
By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.

Tenleytown, National Cathedral, & Glover Archbold Trail
Saturday is forecast to be sunny & almost 50 degrees - welcome relief after the "hike shutdown" weather of the past three weekends. We will meet at noon by the Tenleytown metro station and walk down Nebraska to Foxhall Road and back up the Glover Archbold Trail. We will stop at the National Cathedral and then wend our way back to Tenleytown.
My goal this time of year is to keep hikers off of ice or snow during a jaunt. If the Glover Archbold trail is icy, we will tweak the route and stay on more solid footing to get the same distance.
The starting point for the hike is a hop and a skip from a Whole Foods store with the best peanut butter cookies in the D.C. area.
âś **What we'll do:**
* From the meetup point we'll walk southeast along Wisconsin Ave NW, turn left at Nebraska Ave NW and follow it southwest to Foxhall Rd NW,
* We will hook a left on Garfield Ave. and follow to the Glover-Archbold Trail through the woods back to Cathedral Ave. We will cross Wisconsin Ave and stop at the National Cathedral. We will then wend back to Tenleytown via 36th St., 37th St., and Van Ness.
* Total distance is around 5 miles and should take about 2 hours, . The surface is paved and slightly downhill on the way out, and a slightly uphill mix of pavement and woodland trails on the way back. This is a fairly easy walk.
* [map is for prior version of the hike; update pending] Google map: http://tinyurl.com/y9bthc7a
⡠**How to get there:**
* Metro (recommended): The Tenleytown - AU Metro Station is on the Red Line. See the Metro Trip Planner at https://www.wmata.com/
* Driving: If you must drive, the Tenleytown - AU Metro Stationstreet address is 4501 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016. There is limited parallel parking in the area, but mind the street signs and leave plenty of time to find a spot!
⸠**What to bring:** Plenty of water, comfy shoes.
âš **Weather:** The forecast is sunny and a high temperature of 49F. Updates here: https://tinyurl.com/sw2ejvu8
âş **Advisory**: As a reminder, this is an adult group, and you are ultimately responsible for your own safety and well-being during events. No one under 18 years of age is allowed at this event, either as members or as guests, to include babies in carriers and/or strollers. Dogs must be leashed at all times.
âť **Administrative stuff:** There are restrooms near the meetup point at Whole Foods, Chick-fil-A, Panera Bread, Starbucks, and Target and at the Cathedral.
Lake Anne Brew House Saturday BEER RUN
Run starts promptly at 9:45 am and follows a 1.5 mile loop around the lake. Do however many loops you like!
Run at your own pace.
After the run, we'll meet at the Brew House for a beer or coffee and BREAKFAST pretzels! Those cannot be anything but delicious.
See you there.
Annapolis Rock via Appalachian Trail in South Mountain State Park
**Greetings Empty-Nester Ladies!** Let's meet at the Annapolis Rock Trailhead for a 5.1 mile (800 ft elevation gain) hike to Annapolis Rock. This is considered a moderate, out-and-back trail with great views along the way. The estimated time of the adventure is 2.5-3 hours. If you are a woman, looking to hike with other women in the same "empty-nesting" season of life, this outing might be for you. Whether a versed outdoor women or hoping to identify as an outdoorsy woman this year, come join us!
We will meet at the Annapolis Rock Trailhead in the Appalachian Trail parking area, directly off Rt-40 near Myersville, MD (near the 11275 block). Be mindful to park in designated area, as police have been known to ticket illegally parked cars. The parking area is small; If full, there is paid parking at the Greenbriar State Park entrance, west on Rt-40. We **WILL** hike in the cold weather, but refer to this post for any possible weather cancellations before you head out. It is Valentine's Day, but this event promises to have you off the trail well before any special dinner plans :)
**Don't forget:**
* Small daypack
* â ⼠1-liter of water
* Layers for the weather (hat, gloves, rain jacket, etc.)
* Shoes with good traction (hiking boots, trail runners)
* First aid items you may need
* TP (with baggie to carry out TP :) or Kula cloth
* Charged phone
* Lunch or snacks
**Consider bringing:**
* Hiking poles
* All Trails or Gaia app, with Annapolis Rock trail, downloaded

SNP Dickey Ridge Blooms 3.5 Mi 600 Ft Moderate Hike
This Shenandoah National Park out-and-back hike starts at the Dickey Ridge Trailhead before reaching the North Entrance pay station. A pretty stream runs parallel with the trail for about a mile until we begin an ascent to our turn around point where the trail again intersects with Skyline Drive. At this time of year, we should see early spring flowers! Sections of the trail are rocky, and there are several very small ârock hopâ water crossings. Elevation gain is about 600 ft. We typically hike about 2 mph; however, we leave no one behind and will move at a pace that is comfortable for all. Breaking for flower photos is encouraged!

Lockhouse Stay - Pennyfield Lock to Seneca Quarry / Swains Lock (14.2 miles)
Let's continue exploring the historic lockhouses along the C&O Canal, this time staying in a primitive one -- Pennyfield Lock, located by Lock 22. As this is a primitive lockhouse there are NO modern amenities (running water, electricity, heat, or kitchen), and so you will need to bring everything you need to stay comfortable during this one-night stay. We can enjoy some easy hikes along the towpath and through the nearby Blockhouse Point Conservation Park durig our visit.
Due to the location of the lockhouse, a carpooling spot has not been established. A WhatsApp group will be created closer to the event and will be used to coordinate rides and other event logistics. We will plan to meet at the lockhouse at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning.
## **Trail Facts**
* **Difficulty Level:** Moderate
* **Length:** 14.2 Miles
* **Duration:** 4.5-5.5 hrs
* **Elevation Gain:** 506 Feet
* **Permits:** JuanatĂĄn will provide overnight parking permits to drivers.
* **Parking:** Carpooling will be coordinated via WhatsApp.
* **Dogs:** Not allowed inside the lockhouse, sorry.

**Trail Details:**
We will arrive at the parking lot near the lockhouse at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning. We won't be able to check in, so we will go on a hike to Seneca Quarry, where we can explore some old structures that used to be part of the canal system. We will take a slightly different route back through Blockhouse Point Conservation Park. By then we will be ready to check in to the lockhouse.
Everyone will need to carry their gear 0.1 miles from the parking lot to the lockhouse. There is no kitchen inside and no running water, so keep that in mind when planning dinner. We can all relax, perhaps play some games, and check out the lockhouse.
Closer to nightfall we will go on a short 3-mile hike to Swains Lock where we can enjoy a nice view of the sunset. We will then hike 3 miles back in the dark to the lockhouse and perhaps play games or enjoy a fire before bed.
The next morning everyone is on their own for breakfast. Keep in mind that we need to clean up and be out of the lockhouse no later than 10:00 AM.
The maximum capacity of the lockhouse is eight people. Depending on who signs up it may be necessary to rearrange the provided trundle beds or bring sleeping pads so we can spread out and make sure everyone has a comfortable sleeping arrangement. You can learn more about the lockhouse [here](https://www.canaltrust.org/lockhouse-22/).
Since this is a rustic lockhouse, I will only need $10 from each participant to cover the cost of the reservation. I accept PayPal, Venmo, and cash. :)
I'm looking forward to this relaxing trip. Please let me know if you have any questions.
**Saturday Itinerary:**
* 11:00 AM: Meet at the trailhead, start hiking.
* 3:00 PM: Check into the lockhouse, get set up, eat, play games, etc.
* 6:00 PM: Hike to Swains Lock, enjoy the sunset, hike back.
* 9:00 PM: Potentially enjoy a fire or simply go to bed.
**Sunday Itinerary:**
* Everyone can get up whenever they want to, keeping in mind that we need to clean up and check out of the lockhouse no later than 10:00 AM.
