Silver Tuesdays Nordic Walking in Brockwell Park
Over the last nine years, Silverfit has been able to offer exercise to everyone over 50 in Brockwell Park. Together with Silverfit, I have done my best to keep the exercise fun for everyone, no matter if you are fit or not so fit, strong or not so strong, sporty or not so sporty.
And, over all, I think we have done that pretty well! We have had some glorious years, and we made many, many friends over that time.
Silverfit managed to keep it going through the good times and the hard Covid years, but unfortunately, the reality of the current economic climate is hitting Silverfit hard. Many councils and charities that have supported Silverfit over the years have stopped funding, and without funding, Silverfit just simply cannot keep going.
Recently, they have had to take the hard decision to cut quite a number of their activities, and unfortunately, Nordic Walking in Brockwell park is one of the sessions that needs to be stopped.
Yesterday afternoon was our last session for Silverfit.
But…. I aim to keep your Tuesday walk going!
So many of you love our Tuesday session, and it would just be too sad to stop completely.
I would like to keep the Silver Tuesday session going under my own company, Fit and Happy Outdoors.
Sadly, I cannot do this for free, as I do need to make a living. But in order to keep this session available for everyone, I plan to keep our Tuesday afternoon session at a highly reduced rate compared to my normal rates.
New rates for our Silver Tuesday walks:
10 sessions for £45 (my normal rate is 10 sessions for £90).
For those of you who struggle financially, I am happy to reduce this rate to £30, or even offer it for free.
I can of course only do this if enough of you pay the normal rate, and I trust you will only ask for a reduction if you really need it. As I said, I do this for my living, but I don’t want money to be the reason you miss out on the benefits of Nordic Walking and spending time with our lovely group of friends.
If you are already a member of Fit and Happy Outdoors and you pay monthly, then the Tuesday session is included in your fee. No extra payment is necessary (unless you’d like to sponsor someone who cannot pay)
How does it work?
1) Please email me at Ailien at Fitandhappyoutdoors dot com, and let me know if you agree with me sending you an invoice for the full rate, or if you need a reduced rate.
2) I will then send you an invoice with my bank details on it.
3) Once I have received your payment in my bank account, I will hand you a 10-session card at the first session I see you
4) Every time you come walking on Tuesday, I will stamp your card
5) Once you have walked 10 times, I will send you a new invoice for the next 10.
Payment: I really, really, prefer bank transfers.
If you really do not do bank transfers, then you can pay me in cash. No cheques please (I really try to avoid having to go to the bank, it is just too much hassle).
If you or a friend only comes once in a very blue moon, then they can pay £5 in cash for the session (only banknotes please. Help a girl out, I do enough weightlifting already 😊)
Are you a walk leader? You are always welcome and do not have to pay me. I am grateful for your help!
Do we still need to sign up?
1) Have your own poles? No need to sign up. But, if there is a weather warning, please check in with me as I might have to cancel and if I don’t know you are planning to come, I might not be able to tell you it’s cancelled
2) Happy to use the Meetup app, then sign up for your walk here? If you sign in, I will know you are planning to come, and it will be easy for me to let you know if I do need to cancel a session.
3) Need to borrow poles from me? Please text me ON THE DAY OF THE WALK to ask me to bring a set. My number is 078 078 3456 4. Just use normal text, no Whatsapp please, as I will probably miss your message.
Any questions? Feel free to reply to this email, or text me on the number above.

London Society TALK - Deep conversations
Have you ever wanted to gather together and talk about insightful topics which broadens your thinking and knowledge? If so, this may be the right event for you.
Welcome to the ‘Deep conversations’ event where you get the opportunity to share your views based on the topics that we may cover.
The last time this was executed, it not only went well but we managed to learn from one another which broadened our thinking.
With this particular event, the topics we’ll discuss are:
* Tell me your first holiday you ever went to and if so, what do you remember.
* What’s your opinion on why travelling is great.
* Have you ever been to your motherland and if so, what did you learn and experience?
* What do you appreciate about the uk compared to your experiences abroad?
* If there was any other place you would go to, where would you go and why?
* Tell me one of your most precious memories when you went on holiday.
We get so preoccupied with daily life that we hardly have a chance to sit back and think as well as discuss many topics in such depth. When was the last time you sat back and thought about anything in depth which opened your eyes to so many possibilities and broadened your thinking?
Now is your chance to share your views and learn from one another. By participating in this, you could broaden your ways of thinking, learn new lessons or even heal if you have your hidden struggles.
My fellow explorers, if you enjoyed the event, I’m more than happy to accept any donations which of course are optional but will go a long way to help me unlock and deliver even more exciting and engaging events and resources: https://www.paypal.me/calvinjoy

LIMEHOUSE a living history threatened by Docklands
**LIMEHOUSE WALKING TOUR…**
This is three tours in one, firstly we have the history of the Chinese community who settled and lived in Limehouse in the first part of the twentieth century. Not a lot to see but much to talk about, especially the the truth over exaggerated fiction and rumours of opium dens and prostitution. A fascinating story of a time not so long ago
Then we move on to see the parts Limehouse of today that has been saved from the development of Docklands which towers over the area like a dragon ready to engulf all in its way. Some magnificent buildings that survived to remind us the nautical history of Limehouse back in the day.
Lastly we see Limehouse as the trendy area it has become with cafes and restaurants and a rich mans marina full of super boats we wish we could afford ourselves. This tour has everything, it's the real London not the sad tourist central London of today. Prepare yourselves for a real treat.
This tour will cost the usual £14 cash on the day

Rob Words Live: English Language History!
And now for something completely different - an event on the history of (selected) English words.
"RobWords" is one of my favourite YouTube channels, and Rob himself is doing some live shows. Tickets £29-£37.50. Blurb:
"Why don't we spell things the way we say them? Why is English full of words pilfered and purloined from other languages? ......
*RobWords* is an extremely popular YouTube channel..... which celebrates the wonderful weirdness of the English language...... Rob's love for language was established during a career as a newsreader for BBC radio and presenter on Germany's international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle. Living in Berlin and marrying into a French family have also helped him appreciate just how special English really is, and he now shares his passion for the subject with millions across the globe.
This show will unlock the true wackiness of words and why we speak the way we do. From the origins of silent letters, to why some terms have a multitude of meanings; all of your etymological enigmas will be solved.
Whether it's contronyms, homophones, or portmanteaus that float your linguistic boat, be sure to join us for *Rob Words’ Live!*."
Meet at the bar 1PM, show starts 1:30

'Beautiful Blackheath' Guided Walk
Come along on Sunday 12th April for a Blue Badge Guided Walk around Blackheath!
Blue Badge Guides know London better than anyone. They have trained intensively for two years and passed the highest Tourist Guiding qualification in the UK.
**About the walk**
Many people visit historic Greenwich but very few venture to its more attractive but lesser known neighbour.
The name is recorded in 1166 as *'Blachehedfeld'* and means the "dark coloured heathland". It is formed from the Old English 'blæc' and 'hǣth' and refers to the open space that was the meeting place of the ancient hundred of Blackheath.
Blackheath really does deserve the title of "village" with its unique shops and delightful houses. Hear of the historic gatherings on the Heath, the first game of golf in England, the secret caves and a Queen who fell out of favour. We'll see historic 17th century almshouses, a pagoda and an elegant 18th century crescent where two ladies scandalised Blackheath's polite society.
The walk is a private walk for the group, we will be guided by Blue Badge guides [Diane Burstein](https://www.guidelondon.org.uk/guides/dianeburstein/) and [Rachel Kolsky](https://www.itg.org.uk/register-of-guides/rachel-kolsky).
Rachel will be starting at 2:15pm and Diane at 2:30pm, so on the day, just come along at your chosen time.

Day trip by coach - the Surrey Hills Spring Fair & Two villages! (NOW FULL)
THE TRIP IS NOW FULL, IF YOU WISH TO ATTEND, ADD YOURSELF TO THE WAITING LIST AND I WILL CONTACT YOU IF A PLACE BECOMES AVAILABLE.
Come along on Saturday 11th April to visit some pretty villages in Surrey!
**About the day**
We will be visiting two pretty villages in the county of Surrey and also the 'Surrey Hills Spring Fair' which takes place on this weekend.
**Chaldon**
The village of Chaldon sits in the North Downs, with the first written record of the village being back in 675 AD. It translates as 'the hill (down) where calves were pastured'. The church of St. Peter & St. Paul is an early Norman church that contains a large wall painting of around 1170 depicting images of the ways of salvation and damnation.
**The Surrey Hills Spring Fair & Rural Life Living Museum**
The fair takes place across this weekend in the grounds of the Rural Life Living Museum. The fair includes traditional country crafts, live music, art demonstrations, local food vendors, and outdoor woodland activities. The museum is an open-air museum with objects associated with farming and goods used by local craftsmen between 1750 and 1960.
**Elstead**
The village of Elstead sits on either side of the River Wey. Its relative prosperity over the centuries can be partly attributed to the existence of the availability of a site for a watermill and a bridge over the river. The mill, now a pub restaurant, was occupied by Oliver Cromwell's army during the English Civil War, but subsequently burnt down.
**Entry Cost**
Entry to the Surrey Hills Spring Fair & the Rural Life Living Museum is £11 per person. Payable on the day by cash or credit card.
**Coach seating**

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for April is "Water"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
Tour of Brothers Drake Meadery and mead/tea tasting
Join us for a tour of Brothers Drake Meadery in Grandview, hosted by the owner Oron Benary. He will explain the mead-making process and offer us generous samples of their fine meads.
Mead is basically wine that is made from honey instead of grapes. There are many different flavors that range from dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, to sweet. They are best known for their Apple Pie Mead.
Oron has offered us a special price of 5.00 each person for the tour and tasting, which is normally 25.00 per person. I've taken the tour several times, and it's always enlightening and fun.
Rebecca will bring a tea that will pair well with the mead for a tea tasting afterwards.
Park anywhere around the building. Please avoid parking in front of the houses in the neighborhood behind the Meadery.
Please keep your RSVP current. Knowing how many will attend will help Brothers Drake plan accordingly to accommodate us.

**Day 1 – April 7** – Arrive at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS). Private transportation will take you to your accommodations for the week. After settling into your hotel, your group will get to know each other over a local welcome dinner.
**Note:** We recommend your flight from the US arrives before 11 am on April 7 to allow adequate time to join the day’s activities. If you wish to arrive one day early, on April 6, charges for the additional night’s stay can be added to your invoice.
**Day 2 – April 8** – Today, you will take a memorable tour of the Anne Frank House. Discover Amsterdam’s WWII history and follow in the footsteps of Anne Frank as she went into hiding in the Secret Annex. Jewish Anne Frank hid in 1942 from the Nazis during the occupation of the Netherlands; two years later, she was discovered and died in 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Afterward, continue your cultural journey with a visit to the renowned Van Gogh Museum. Home to the world’s largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, the museum offers a profound look into the artist’s life, featuring iconic paintings, sketches, and personal letters that reveal the struggles and brilliance behind his art.
**Day 3 – April 9** – FREE Day. Enjoy shopping throughout the city, or take a scenic bike ride through the countryside. Cycling in Amsterdam is the most authentic way to travel. There are around 515 km (320 miles) of dedicated cycle lanes in Amsterdam, making it the perfect setting to cycle the city or beyond. The countryside area is famous for its quaint villages, historic towns, farms, nature reserves, and lakes. You will have many opportunities to stop and take one-of-a-kind photos of the picturesque sights.
**Day 4 – April 10** – Your group will spend today at the famous Keukenhof Garden, known as the Garden of Europe. This is one of the world’s largest flower gardens and is found to be the most beautiful in spring. Keukenhof Park covers an area of 32 hectares and has approximately 7 million flower bulbs planted annually. Make sure to have your camera ready to capture all of the vibrant colors and unique displays at the Keukenhof Garden! Transfer from Amsterdam to begin your adventure in The Hauge as the fun continues.
**Day 5 – April 11** – Begin your day with a walking tour of the Hague! Today you will visit notable sites include Binnenhof Court of Parliament, the Royal Palace Noordeinde and its lush gardens, and many local monuments. Have a free afternoon to explore on your own before joining your group to indulge in a delectable group dinner.
**Day 6 – April 12** – Day trip to Delft for a walking tour of this charming and historic Dutch town. Stroll along picturesque canals, cobbled streets, and tree-lined squares as you explore landmarks such as the Markt, the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), and the Royal Delft pottery factory. Admire the town’s rich artistic heritage, famously tied to painter Johannes Vermeer, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere that defines Delft’s small-town charm. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local café before returning by train to your accommodation in The Hague.
**Day 7 – April 13** – Depart The Hague via train for your return to Amsterdam. You will depart back to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) for your connecting flight to the US. Your departure flight needs to leave after 12 pm to allow time to return to Amsterdam.
