**House Concert with Mike Agranoff** **When: Sunday, March 15 • 4:00 pm (Doors 3:30 pm)** **Location: Edgewater, MD** A house concert at the home of Michele and Dennis Callaghan in Edgewater, MD Mike Agranoff is one of those folk performers that steadfastly defies categorization and yet amasses stalwart fans from folk aficionados of all categories. He draws his material from sources as diverse as traditional ballads and fiddle tunes, Tin Pan Alley, contemporaries in the Folk World, and his own witty pen. Although he does perform some original material, he considers himself more an astute singer-songfinder, priding himself in discovering the hidden gems, unknown in the larger folk world. He delivers them with a skilled hand on guitar, English concertina, or occasionally unaccompanied with an almost telepathic transmittal of the essence of the song, and occasionally sly twinkle in the eye in anticipation of some of the most horrible parodies ever perpetrated on an unsuspecting audience. A signature feature of Mike’s performances is his inclusion of some heart-stopping spoken-word pieces that rivet the listener to unforgettable stories. Anita Thomas has put together what you could properly term “the dream team” of a band - grab your tickets now for a pot of gold show! Anita Thomas has had great fortune bestowed upon her. Having lived in Australia and California and now Maryland she has had the opportunity to meet and play with stellar jazz musicians from around the globe. For this PRJC performance she is presenting not only some of our fabulous local jazz musicians but also one you may not have yet heard in person. Anita is bringing in NYC trumpeter Danny Tobias, in demand throughout the NYS area and (literally) ships at sea, a veteran of jazz cruises. Joining Danny are local standouts Scott Silbert on reeds, David Sager on trombone, Craig Gildner on piano. Joining Anita from her roost in Hagerstown will be Chuck Ferrell on drums, while versatile Anita herself will be handling string bass AND bass saxophone chores. This band is going to be exciting and hot but also sweet and tender. It promises to be an event to remember - and it may bring the luck of the Irish to ya. ● Ultra-light ball (\~1/8th as heavy as a normal 5). This allows zero chances of ball causing brain injury. (Hence the name, Soccer Zero.) It's also nice to do toe kicks! ● Injury-based foul system. This means that the rules apply even for same-team-side fouls, too. You can use your hands to protect yourself from the ball; hand balls are only called if you did it to gain an advantage. Yellow cards will cause the fouler to sit out for 120 seconds. Strong kicks of balls to anyone's head, called "face kicks", or nuts (for male players only), are yellow-card fouls even though the ball is so light it doesn't matter as much. This penalizes inconsiderate play, something we really do care about. Reckless players or anyone getting a red card is banned. (Before heading, you need to have an idea of where other nearby players are.) So, as an example, if you kicked the ball at high speed to your own teammate's head you still have to sit out for 2 minutes. ● No out of bounds. This makes it more interesting and easier to ref. ● No offsides. ● No goalies for the senior team. (The senior team is the one that is ahead in points.) This rule is used in place of an offsides rule, since it implies you cannot win by sticking some fat player who stands in front of their relatively small Pugg goal all day long. We define a goalie to be any defender intentionally within the "goal area". In turn, this *goal area* is defined as the ground in front of the goal covered by the top of the goal, were the goal to be tipped forwards onto the ground, similar to what would happen if the wind blew strongly from behind and the stakes were not secured. ● Goal resizing. Sometimes a strong player comes on mid-game after teams were picked by the two captains. If someone like Ronaldo joins a team and/or both captains agree to goal resizing to make the game more balanced the game will be stopped and the goal sizes altered to make it more even. Please don't suggest team shuffling as a better method. It destroys the team spirit. If the switched player sucks, it will add insult to injury to him or her. On the other hand, if the switched player is good, past points stack against him or her, which also destroys the game integrity, much of which is about trying to get your team to win. Goal resizing and point multiplying (each point counts as 2 for the junior team) maintains game integrity and helps maintain balance and game intensity. Games are in Silver Spring, MD. They are reffed. Clean red and blue pinnies are supplied when needed. A weekly invitation including a recap of the prior week's game is sent out to any players who want to read it. You see, the ideal number of players for a pickup soccer game is perhaps 6x6 - 8x8; some players won't attend if they think the turnout will be low, and others will just assume the game will be cancelled even though we always play. (As a practical matter, smaller games are less fun since the comics won't have the audience they need, but, they do have two hidden benefits: shorter, more intense games/workouts and fewer face kicks/yellow cards. So we play no matter how small or large.) So non-RSVPers are a little short sighted, since they don't seem to want to maximize their own enjoyment in the long run. We’ll explore how medieval literary texts inspired later legends and became adapted into folklore. You’ll gain an understanding of how the medieval Catholic Church’s growing power led local people to reimagine their ancient gods and goddesses as Christian figures like Saint Bridget and Saint Patrick. Practiced and preserved by Afro-Brazilian communities in several Brazilian states including Rio de Janeiro. Come out and join this class exploring the basics of jongo with live drumming. A fun way to compare wines from two different countries at a time. House Wine is squaring off two countries' wines against each other each Thursday in March. We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM. It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude.
