Scanning Tunneling Microscope - Lab Day - Scanning Run - #14
Scanning Tunneling Microscope - Lab Day - Scanning Run - #14
Today we are Steve's Lab. RSVP and you'll be sent the location. It's in Silver Spring. ***Join us for an evening in an electronics lab where we will attempt to run clean scans of graphene and gold samples, and then clean up that data with post processing.*** This is a high sensitivity experiment, and we do not plan on being successful so early. But we've had promising results lately - so we will be putting in the time. We are NOT meeting at our usual location, but rather at Steve's house/lab. If you RSVP, you will get a DM with the address but it's located in Silver Spring. We will attempt full, clean lab - clean tip repeated scanning tests to see what we can learn and improve. We will experiment with online attendees, but if all possible showing up in person is strongly encouraged. Online join link is: - [https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers](https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers) Our community is building (and documenting for other teams) how to build a scanning tunneling microscope using a mix of common and 3D printed parts. This will allow us to scan and visualize a single atom - an ambitious we are doing over the course of a few months. The MoCo Makers community is one of the most innovative and competent groups in Maryland, and we've done everything from [publishing cancer research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38136356/), to [launching products](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gotim/cozy-curvy-multi-contour-pillow), [winning grants](https://covidinfocommons.datascience.columbia.edu/awards/2014255), and inspiring thousands. Now our biggest challenge yet has appeared. We are building a Scanning Tunneling Microscope, that will allow us to scan and visualize single atoms. To get a better idea of what we are doing, see our reference project here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g) All starting CAD, code, and reference files should exist. However, let's be the first Maker community to document the build process and share it with learners around the world. We will be publishing our work here -[ https://hackaday.io/project/202816-qt-panda](https://hackaday.io/project/202816-qt-panda) If you need a ride, let us know.
Transforming Ingested Data into Voice-Driven Discovery and Reporting with AI
Transforming Ingested Data into Voice-Driven Discovery and Reporting with AI
Organizations today are collecting more data than ever before, yet much of that information remains difficult to access, understand, and act upon. Dashboards are often fragmented, reports require specialized knowledge, and valuable insights remain trapped inside disconnected systems. At the same time, advances in AI, speech technologies, and intelligent workflows are changing how people interact with information. Instead of navigating complex interfaces or manually building reports, users can increasingly ask questions naturally using voice and receive intelligent, contextual responses in real time. In this meetup, we will explore how modern AI systems are transforming raw ingested data into conversational, voice-driven experiences that enable discovery, analytics, reporting, and operational insight. We will examine how enterprise data from documents, APIs, databases, business applications, and event streams can be processed, structured, indexed, and exposed through AI-powered interfaces that support natural language interaction. The session will cover the end-to-end architecture behind intelligent voice-enabled reporting systems, including data ingestion pipelines, semantic indexing, retrieval strategies, AI orchestration, speech-to-text processing, large language models, and response generation. We will discuss how AI agents can reason over enterprise information, dynamically generate reports, summarize findings, identify anomalies, and provide conversational access to operational knowledge. You will also see how voice interfaces are evolving beyond simple assistants into intelligent workflow companions capable of interacting with business systems, coordinating actions, and supporting decision-making across departments such as sales, operations, customer service, finance, and executive leadership. Topics we will explore include: * AI-powered data ingestion and transformation pipelines * Semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) * Voice interfaces for enterprise analytics and reporting * Real-time conversational querying of structured and unstructured data * AI agents and workflow orchestration * Intelligent summarization and automated report generation * Integrating speech technologies with enterprise systems * Security, governance, and responsible AI considerations * Practical architectures and implementation strategies Whether you are a developer, architect, analyst, technology leader, entrepreneur, or AI enthusiast, this session will provide practical insight into how conversational AI and voice-driven systems are reshaping the future of enterprise intelligence and human-computer interaction. Join us for an engaging discussion, live demonstrations, architecture walkthroughs, and real-world examples showing how organizations can move from static reporting to dynamic, conversational discovery powered by AI.

Read & Reflect: A Social Reading Circle. Shared Pages, Shared Insights.
📚 Do you love reading, but wish you had a structure and a community to share your insights with? Join our small circle of curious minds (just 4 members per gathering) as we come together for an hour of focused reading—in the calm setting of a library or the cozy atmosphere of a café. Here’s how it works: First part: Quiet reading on your own—bring a book you’re exploring, whether it’s philosophy, history, psychology, literature, or anything meaningful to you. Second part: We regroup and each person shares key takeaways, insights, or questions sparked by their reading. This sparks a structured yet free-flowing conversation around ideas, perspectives, and personal reflections. Why join? Add structure to your reading habit. Discover new books, authors, and ideas through others’ choices. Build real connections by sharing and listening deeply. Socialize around something meaningful instead of small talk.

Quantum Computing for Business (Exploring Opportunities Available Today)
Quantum Computing for Business (Exploring Opportunities Available Today)
Title: Quantum Computing for Business (Exploring Opportunities Available Today) Date: June 27 2026 Saturday Noon - 14:00 EDT Summary: Big media reports that current quantum computers are not able to attack business problems at scale. In Ron's experience, this is only about 95% true. He has found that certain types of quantum computers, specifically quantum annealers, are very good at solving constraint based optimization problems at business scale. This presentation will answer the question “What is quantum computing?” by comparing quantum computers to classical computers and describing the various types of quantum qubits. Ron 'll introduce what quantum computers can be used for and what they shouldn't be used for. Next, Ron will look at a number of quantum computing use cases that are currently available to businesses today. Finally, Ron ’ll present conclusions with a brief discussion of future hardware. There will be time for Q & A. Speaker: Ron has been fortunate to have worked in a broad range of technical disciplines during his career. Areas in which he developed expertise and innovative results include, digital hardware design, silicon functional architecture (chips), computer language compiler development, and medical software. Ron has recently immersed himself in quantum computing technologies and has obtained more than a dozen certificates across the quantum spectrum. These technologies include various hardware platforms, numerous quantum programming frameworks and quantum sensors. As a co-founder and CQTO of B2Quantum, Inc, Ron has served as a quantum computing Subject Matter Expert (SME) for a large pharma company. As a SME, he performed quantum computing use case analysis, strategic planning, budget guidance and risk analysis. Outside of the technical arena, Ron is a licensed pilot, certified open water SCUBA diver, bicyclist, wood worker and a once in a while artist.

June Grand Gaming Melee
June Grand Gaming Melee
At long last, construction work at Arlington Central Library is complete, at least in the area that’s most important to AARGGH: the auditorium. The librarians are delighted to welcome us back for the first Grand Gaming Melee there in nearly three years. As in pre-construction days, we’ll have board games, card games, dice games, tile games, and just about every other kind of game that can be played on a tabletop. Bring games you want to play, or come without games and play what others bring. If you see a new one you want to try, there will be plenty of people eager to teach you. Don’t forget snacks! You’ll need to replenish your energy during the day, so please bring something delicious to share. Cookies, crackers, and pretzels are popular options, as are sodas and juices. Some people bring doughnuts, cupcakes, or other substantial sweets; these are always appreciated and disappear quickly. Others may provide healthy treats of fruit and vegetables – we appreciate everything you bring to share! **AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT NOTE:** While the library welcomes us with open arms, it does not offer us an open refrigerator. Due to remodeling in the building, we no longer have access to a kitchen. **If you bring any drinks or foods that should remain chilled, you must bring a cooler for them.** Your host – as always – will bring a couple of coolers filled with freshly brewed iced tea and excellent store-bought lemonade. Undoubtedly there will be demand for more drinks than he can carry, so a few attendees should heed the call of the thirsty. If you bring something else to drink, please provide cold storage for it. You may want to coordinate such an effort with your fellow players to supply maximum variety of beverages with a minimum of containers; feel free to post comments on this page for this purpose. Food and drink will be deployed on the stage at the front of the auditorium to separate it from the playing area. Official start time is 10:30am, but you may arrive as early as 10:00am to help with setup. Cleanup begins around 4:00pm (or whenever you decide that you can’t squeeze in one more game before the end of the event). The librarians appreciate our vacating the auditorium by 4:30pm, and by “appreciate” they mean that our compliance determines whether we’ll be invited back for another Grand Gaming Melee. Arlington Central cleanup instructions: * Place all trash in the bins provided. Make sure that no scraps of paper, cardboard, or food remain on the floor. * Leave the tables and chairs where you used them. The next group can deal with setup the same way we did.

Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code - Alan Barber
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 You will need to scan your ID at the door to get a visitor badge. **Abstract** *Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code* Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs. In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling. The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options. **YouTube Link** TBD
