Narrative Identity: Culture, War, and the Search for Meaning
Narrative Identity: Culture, War, and the Search for Meaning
**Narrative Identity: Culture, War, Memory, and the Search for One’s Own Life** Narrative identity means that human beings understand themselves through stories. A person does not only live from one moment to the next. They try to make sense of their life by asking: Who am I? Where do I come from? What has shaped me? What do my experiences mean? In this way, identity is not only something we have; it is also something we create and understand through a life story. This life story is never completely private. It is shaped by family, language, education, religion, culture, history, social relationships, and collective memory. People need words, symbols, traditions, and examples in order to understand themselves. A culture gives individuals the material from which they can build a meaningful narrative about their own lives. However, this process becomes difficult when cultural transmission is broken. Many societies have experienced war, colonialism, revolution, dictatorship, displacement, exile, migration, or political violence. These historical events do not only destroy cities and institutions. They can also interrupt memories, weaken traditions, divide families, and create silence between generations. As a result, people may inherit fragments of culture without fully understanding them. This problem is not limited to Europe after the World Wars. It can also be seen in many other countries and regions, such as Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Korea, Bosnia, Rwanda, and many others. Each case is different, but they all raise a similar question: How can people form a stable sense of self when the stories, values, and memories that should help them understand their lives have been damaged or divided by history? In such situations, identity can become fragmented. A person may feel caught between different narratives: family memory, national history, religion, political ideology, exile, trauma, and personal experience. Sometimes people are expected to accept an official story about who they are, while their own feelings and memories do not fit into that story. This can create alienation: the feeling that one’s own life is not fully one’s own. Narrative identity is therefore connected to the overcoming of alienation. A person begins to overcome alienation when they can understand their experiences as part of their own life story. Pain, fear, loss, migration, silence, shame, hope, and resistance are not only private emotions. They can become meaningful parts of a narrative when they are expressed, understood, and connected to a wider historical context. Art can play an important role in this process. Literature, music, film, painting, theatre, poetry, and other forms of artistic expression can give shape to experiences that are difficult to explain directly. Art can make hidden memories visible, give voice to trauma, and create a space where personal and collective history can be reinterpreted. Through art, individuals may find new ways to tell their own stories and reconnect with themselves, others, and their culture. This discussion invites a critical exploration of identity as a personal, social, cultural, and historical reality. Narrative identity is not simply about remembering the past. It is about understanding one’s life within history and finding a way to appropriate that life as one’s own. In societies shaped by war, displacement, and cultural rupture, the search for narrative identity becomes a search for meaning, and belonging. *** 📅 Event Details 🗓️ Date: Saturday, 27 Juni 2026 ⏰ Time: 14:00 📍 Location: Hardenbergstraße 10, 10623 Berlin 📱 WhatsApp: For prep materials and directions (Group Chat) [Group Chat Bio KI](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ba8ZAaH2Yuk6FGmD3LLO7H)

Back to the Nest - Warm Data Lab and more
Back to the Nest - Warm Data Lab and more
Join us for our Celebration with food, fire, and real conversation. A living lab, shared stories, and big questions about Culture and Nature We'd love to invite you to the first of our **Summer Celebrations**, a new rhythm we're adding to KulturNest life, alongside our end-of-year gathering. These gatherings have a simple purpose: to connect, to share what we're each working on, and to think together about what we're building. We believe the wisdom in this community belongs to all of us. **27th June, 12:00 – 16:00 Freienwalder Str. (entrance beside La Pica, Freienwalder Str. 14a, 13055 Berlin)** **Flow:** 12:00 Come as you are. The afternoon opens with food, fire, and unhurried conversation. Simple pleasure of being in the same place at the same time. Bring your appetite and something for the barbecue. 13:30 Step into the Warm Data Lab. An open invitation to a living lab, where information moves between stories. Come curious. No preparation needed, maybe your story is already there? The lab is hosted by a certified host. 14:40 What is, and might be, KulturNest to you? Short, spontaneous sharing. Then a brief look at our projects and funding, with space for questions. 15:10 Think with us. Rotating conversations. One question at the centre: How might we place Nature at the centre of Culture? Come with a thought, a question, or something you haven't quite figured out yet. The World Café method works best when ideas are still a little unfinished. 15:50 A gentle closing. We'll come together to close the afternoon with a warm invitation to find out more about KulturNest membership, for those who feel drawn to go deeper. Ask us any questions!
📸 Studio B/W Portrait Photography in Weissense
📸 Studio B/W Portrait Photography in Weissense
Join us for our second studio event this year, first in this new studio in [Weissensee](https://studioweissensee.berlin/), for a minimalistic session with 3 models. **Main theme:** This all-black-and-white studio session is a deep dive into the mastery of contrast and light. Instead of just taking striking photos, you will deconstruct and replicate the artistic decisions of photography’s greatest masters. You will explore how deep shadows, bright highlights, and texture shape emotion and direct the viewer’s eye. The session is divided into three distinct technical blocks based on iconic reference styles: 1. **Terry Richardson & Platon:** Minimalist sets, flat direct flash, and raw, high-contrast emotional energy. 2. **Peter Lindbergh:** Cinematic, soft yet directional window light, unretouched skin texture, and honest human emotion. 3. **Hedi Slimane:** Aggressive digital black-and-white, sharp side-lighting, and cold rock-and-roll decadence. The goal is to understand how light reveals, conceals, separates, and connects. By consciously borrowing these techniques, you will learn to use contrast as a powerful visual and emotional tool with your own subjects. **💡 Formula** This rotation-based format is built to maximize your shooting time and creative output. You’ll work across three setups, lighting styles, and models, all in a single session. * **1-on-1 Shooting:** Dedicated time with each model. * **Ready-to-Shoot:** Professionally lit, styled environments for varied content. * **Inspiring Atmosphere:** A focused chance to experiment, connect, and create alongside like-minded photographers. **👥 Who & What to Expect** * **Participants:** Up to 12 photographers, divided into 3 rotating groups. * **Skill Level:** Intermediate and above. * **The Models:** 3 carefully selected models. * **🔗 See Our Past Events** Check out selected coverage of our past TFP events: * [Event Recap 1](https://www.instagram.com/p/C58r4z2ojQJ/) * [Event Recap 2](https://www.instagram.com/theisoclubcollective/reel/C8E17M7KyOz/) * [Event Recap 3](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6YYzKbiVax/) * **📍 Location:** [Weissensee](https://studioweissensee.berlin/) \- Streustrasse 42\, 13086 Berlin **🎟️ Payment** **Participation fee:** 50 EUR **🔄 Post-Shoot Requirements** * It is **mandatory** to share your final edited photos with the models and organizers - we recommend using [Picflow](https://picflow.com/) * Collaborate with models before sharing their photos on your social media, and always properly tag & mention them * Make sure to tag & mention us on your photos from this event using our IG handles: [@the_isoclub](https://instagram.com/the_isoclub), [@_portraitscenter](http://https;//%5B%5B%5Binstagram.com/_portraitscenter%5D%5D%5D(%5B%5Binstagram.com/_portraitscenter%5D%5D)(%5B%5Binstagram.com/_portraitscenter%5D%5D(%5Binstagram.com/_portraitscenter%5D))(%5B%5Binstagram.com/_portraitscenter%5D%5D(%5Binstagram.com/_portraitscenter%5D)(%5Binstagram.com/_portraitscenter%5D(instagram.com/_portraitscenter)))) ✅ **Terms and conditions for participants:** [Document](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EEhcsXgInJaYgyIxnMObQnz7ZVUxp7MuGe8_fCR5Y2g/edit?usp=sharing)

Men's Group meetup
Men's Group meetup
**The idea for this group is to build a community where men can gather together and build connections & learn and grow from each other.** How we start each meeting is by each of us checking in with our "roses and thorns" aka what are the good things and the bad things going on in your life recently? Then we will go into a topic discussion. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **COMMUNITY AGREEMENTS** \*\*THERE WILL BE A ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY FOR NO-SHOWS. IF YOU RSVP TO A MEETING AND FAIL TO SHOW UP WITHOUT NOTICE, YOU'LL BE REMOVED FROM THE GROUP. THIS IS TO PRESERVE THE INTEGRITY OF THE GROUP\*\* 1. Confidentiality - EVERYTHING that is shared NEVER leaves this space so that this space remains safe and sacred. There is a zero tolerance policy for this. If a man is in violation of this, they will be permanently removed from the group. 2. Non-Judgement - we respect and honor every man’s truth so that we may receive the same from others. While we may not agree on everything, we commit to respecting every man’s perspectives and engaging in honorable discussion with one another. 3. Be committed - honor your commitment to this group and to yourself. If you attend a meeting, please commit yourself fully to the meeting. Also be committed to your own journey. When we fail, we own it & clean it up. 4. Speak from the heart - this is NOT a space to “look good”, have the “right” answers, and have it all together. Relax and know you are not alone. Be exactly who you are within the safety of this space. 5. Be supportive - This means always willing to provide encouragement to your fellow men, encourage action and momentum in each other’s lives.. Be willing to challenge each other. Be willing to hold each other accountable. 6. Participation - what you receive from this community will be a reflection of what you put into it. Period. We ask that you share your perspectives, reflect on others, and give/receive support when and where it’s needed.
