Informal discussion: Burnout, ADHD and the Search for Meaning in Modern Society
Many people today feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or disconnected despite living in a time of unprecedented comfort and opportunity.
In this first gathering of the **Vienna Mind & Meaning Circle**, we will explore the psychological and societal factors behind burnout, attention difficulties, and the growing search for meaning in modern life.
We will discuss questions such as:
* Why do so many people feel chronically exhausted?
* Why do so many people feel exhausted despite modern comfort?
* Is burnout mainly a personal problem or a societal one?
* What role does attention fragmentation (social media, multitasking) play?
* How does modern society shape attention and ADHD-like experiences?
* Why are so many people today searching for meaning?
* What role does meaning and purpose play in psychological well-being?
The event will begin with a short introduction followed by an open discussion where everyone is welcome to share ideas and perspectives.
This is not a lecture but a **small discussion circle** designed for thoughtful conversation.
No background in psychology is required - curiosity is enough.
This event will be limited to 13 people and the places will be given in a first come first serve basis.

\*\*\*\*\* Session Details \*\*\*\*\*
**Speaker 1:** Rajeet Kumar
**Title:** Stop Guessing, Start Indexing: A Developer’s Guide to Database Indexes
A lot of developers know that indexes make queries faster, but many don’t know why, when an index will actually be used, or why some queries ignore them completely.
In this talk, we open that black box.
We build a mental model of the B-Tree, the structure used by most databases for their default indexes, and look at its internal layout.
Using that model, we’ll explore where B-Tree indexes shine, where they fail, the costs associated with them, and how selectivity affects whether an index is used.
Finally, we’ll briefly look at practical techniques such as covering indexes and functional indexes.
**Speaker 2:** Jan Karremans
**Title:** Is your PostgreSQL truly Cloud(native)?
As organizations modernize their platforms with containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and microservices, databases are often the last piece to truly transform. Simply lifting and shifting PostgreSQL to a cloud VM does not automatically make it cloud-native. So what does?
We’ll cut through the buzzword bingo and examine what they mean for PostgreSQL in real-world environments. Drawing from decades of database experience and years running PostgreSQL in Kubernetes, this session highlights how cloud-native principles such as automation, resilience, observability, and rapid redeployment reshape the way developers and DBAs collaborate.
Whether you are a developer, DBA, architect, or decision-maker, this talk will help you assess where you stand today and what it takes to make PostgreSQL a true enabler of speed and innovation in modern cloud environments.
**Speaker 3:** Pavlo Golub
**Title:** Bringing Real Test Coverage to PostgreSQL Code

The Psychology and Personal Growth Circle: How To Know A Person by David Brooks
Welcome to our cozy **The Psychology and Personal Growth Circle** which is part of the Social Book Club!
We will meet to discuss the book “**How To Know A Person"** (306 pages) written by David Brooks.
The idea is to connect with like minded readers that love to grow and get to know themselves better through reading and especially applying knowledge from books.
We meet up once a month and talk about our progress applying knowledge from a certain book and our experience.
The event will take place at the volunteer organisation **MUT**.
It is an organisation to supports humans, animals and the environment especially in Vienna.
MUT or the Social Book Club look forward to some donation to cover the cost of this event.
If you would like to help, please bring some cash with you.
Book Description:
If you are going to care for someone, you must first understand them. If you're going to hire, marry, or befriend someone, you have to be able to see them. If you are going to work closely with someone, you have to be able to make them feel recognized and valued. As David Brooks observes, "The older I get, the more I come to the certainty that there is one skill at the center of any healthy family, company, classroom, community or the ability to see each other, to know other people, to make them feel valued, heard and understood."
And yet we humans don't do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In *How to Know a Person*, Brooks sets out to help us to do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us. If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them? What kind of conversations should you have? What parts of a person's story should you pay attention to?
See you then!
All the best
Sebastian

Friday Night at Junto - French Conversation Group
Friday Night French Conversation Hour
Bonjour tout le monde!
(English Below)
Venez nombreux!
A tres bientot
\-\-\-\-
Hello everyone!
It’s been a long time since we’ve had a Friday night French meetup.
I suggest that we meet at the Junto Hotel in Columbus this coming Friday, 20 March (friday) 2026 at 7PM.
There’s a great spot with both outdoor and indoor areas, a café (which closes at 7 p.m., come a bit early if that interests you), a restaurant, and a bar.
Parking is paid and is located right across from the science museum called COSI. There is additional free and paid street parking around at varying distances.
It’s a bit expensive, but you don’t have to buy anything since the area is really just a large hotel lobby. It's nice though.
I spoke with management, and they’re happy to welcome us, though there’s no specific space reserved just for us.
It’ll start at 7 p.m. and go until whenever.
I’d like this to become a monthly event, and if this space doesn’t suit us well, we can discuss other options.
Speaking and understanding French well is ideal but there may be learners there as well.
I’m Brandon. I’ll be wearing a blue and white cap that says “Québec.”
Come find us.

From Web Forms to Web Components - Burton Smith
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
**Abstract**
Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively.
This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way.
