Beyond Copilot: Agentic Java Development with Claude Code - Victor Szoltysek
Most Java developers have tried AI-assisted coding through chat interfaces or inline autocomplete. Useful — but limited.
In this talk, we’ll explore the next step: agentic Java development using Claude Code. Instead of treating AI as a smarter text box, we’ll look at what changes when the model can reason across files, plan multi-step changes, interact with tools, and operate closer to how real developers work.
This will be a practical, experience-driven session focused on:
• How agentic coding differs from ChatGPT-style prompting and traditional Copilot usage
• Where Claude Code fits (and where it doesn’t) in real Java projects
• How tools, context, and workflows matter more than “prompt tricks”
• How to avoid unstructured vibe coding while still moving faster
No prior experience with agentic tools is required. The goal isn’t to sell a silver bullet — it’s to help Java developers understand what’s genuinely new, what’s hype, and how these tools can be used responsibly in real-world codebases.
**About the venue**
Free Times Cafe has bistro-style seating and a full food and drink menu. Please consider helping to support the venue by planning to have supper during the talk.

Toronto Accolades Chorus - New Members Welcome
## Rehearsal Details:
Thursday evenings
6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m,
Earl Bales Community Centre
4169 Bathurst St., just south of Sheppard, in Toronto.
Email our membership chair, if you are interested in attending a rehearsal.
**Lisa Taylor: 647-886-1766, [membershipchair@torontoaccolades.com](mailto:membershipchair@torontoaccolades.com)**
Do you love to sing?
Do you love performing for live audiences?
The Toronto Accolades Chorus brings women-centric singers together to sing and perform a cappella harmony.
Harmony connects people from all backgrounds, ages, and musical abilities to create a community where you can not only sing, but find a space to connect with other strong and dedicated people just like you.
For decades, we've provided a venue for singers to express themselves, make quality music together, and form bonds beyond measure, and we invite you to join us for the ride.
We welcome guests and work with them to find out their voice range and to determine what part (lead, tenor, baritone or bass) they would sing best. Guests are given a music folder and encouraged to participate in singing with the chorus in subsequent weeks.
Although we continually strive for musical excellence, prior musical training is not necessary to belong to our chorus. We provide everyone with sheet music, audio learning tracks, education and guidance.
At the end of 6 weeks, we ask each prospective member to audition, to ensure that they can hold their part in a four-part harmony song.

When Norm Violations Come Out of the Shadows
This talk will explore what happens to public discourse when previously restrictive norms against blatant falsehood and overt racism start to erode.
Are there still efforts to conceal?
Do new mechanisms arise?
What changes in audiences and communicative environments allow for these shifts, and how can one push back against them?
Jennifer Saul

Professor
Department of Philosophy
University of Waterloo
**About the Speaker:**
Jenny's primary interests are in Philosophy of Language, Pragmatics, Feminism, Philosophy of Race, and Philosophy of Psychology. In recent years, much of her work has been on deception and racism in political speech. Her book *[Dogwhistles and Figleaves: How Manipulative Language Spreads Racism and Falsehood](https://global.oup.com/academic/product/dogwhistles-and-figleaves-9780192871756?cc=ca&lang=en&) has recently been published by Oxford University Press*. It explores certain commonalties in the communicative mechanisms that have allowed politicians to get away with much more obvious falsehood and racism than previously thought possible.
Jenny has also published *Lying, Misleading and What is Said: An Exploration in Philosophy of Language and in Ethics* (Oxford University Press 2012). It argued that considering the distinction between lying and misleading-- which seems to many an ethically significant one-- can help to shed new light on methodological disputes in philosophy of language over notions like what is said, semantic content, implicature, and the semantic/pragmatic distinction more generally.
Jenny was Director of the Leverhulme-funded Implicit Bias and Philosophy Project. She has published[ two co-edited volumes](https://global.oup.com/academic/product/implicit-bias-and-philosophy-volumes-1-and-2-9780198766186?cc=ca&lang=en&) on implicit bias with Michael Brownstein, and she continues to lecture widely on this topic to a range of audiences. She is especially interested in helping institutions find methods to combat implicit biases, and she frequently advises on this topic. Her view is that [structural and institutional solutions are the most effective means of doing this](https://www.timeshighereducation.com/blog/implicit-bias-training-often-flawed-shouldnt-be-scrapped), and she works with the institutions at which she speaks to improve their policies and procedures.

Two 45-minute sets with a break in between - perfect for catching up with your crew, debating whether that bass solo was genius or showing off, and ordering another round. This isn't background music. This is sit-down, listen-up jazz from people who've dedicated their lives to it. The whole experience runs about 3 hours.

Drumming Circle & Uplifting Discussion 🪘✨🌍
## Details
**NO MUSICAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED**
**About Drum & Soul**
The only intention behind Drum & Soul is to help create vibrant, healthier, and more united communities – together. We believe art is the best channel for that purpose. This is more than a drumming circle. It is a practical space where we do two things at once: we develop useful skills and cultivate inner qualities, and we help others grow those same qualities. Through rhythms from many cultures, collective singing and meaningful conversation around a focused theme, we practise skills that strengthen both the individual and the community.
**Why come**
If you want to expand your expressive capacity, practise listening with depth, learning to lead or join others who take community wellbeing to heart, Drum & Soul is for you. This is a place to try courageously, to learn deeply, and to contribute authentically. Everyone is welcome regardless of background or musical experience. If you feel shy in groups, that is completely natural and we got you. A few of us will gently hover around newcomers like butterflies, offering a warm welcome and quiet space so nobody feels out of place. Many people tell us they arrived nervous but soon felt as if they had stepped into a family home.
**How it works**
At the start of each session we centre with a short breathing exercise, followed by a demonstration of simple rhythms, then break into small groups for guided conversation. Then we’ll have a potluck meal and continuing our conversation and connection over a break. Finally we move into collective jamming and improvisation.
**Typical meeting flow**
1. 🫱🏽🫲🏻 Arrival & social time – 15 min
2. 🙋🏻♀️ Welcome, check in and centring – 15 min
3. 🪘 Call & Respond **Drumming & demo** – 15 min
4. 💬 Facilitated **Discussion** on the Theme (groups of five-or so) – 20 min
5. 🦋 Potluck **dinner** & social time afterwards – 40 min
6. 🕺🏽 Open **Jamming** with multiple instruments – 30 min
*This outline is flexible and may shift to suit the group and the space.*
**Logistics & what to bring**
We meet in a large beautiful space. Drums are available on a first come first served basis. We also provide plenty of small percussion instruments so every hand can play. You are welcome to bring your own drum or instrument. After our time of drumming and dialogue, we share a simple potluck dinner, an extension of our circle where conversation continue to flourish over nourishing food. Feel free to bring whatever you love to share.
**Cost & contributions**
This is a free event. As a community we are encouraged to contribute even a small snack to share with everyone, or pay what or if you can, to cover the costs of refreshments and material, by E-transfer to: \*\*[hooshmandnyc@gmail.com**](http://hooshmandnyc@gmail.com**) – Contributions are optional.
**Helpful notes**
No prep needed. Doors open at 3:45 p.m. Please arrive by then so we can start at 4:00 p.m. sharp and keep the flow. Location and any last minute updates are posted on Meetup and in our WhatsApp group. We recommend joining the WhatsApp group (ask us for the link at the venue) for quick notices.
**Why this matters**
The world is ill, and is aching for a lasting remedy. We believe our sacred mission is to nurture one another, define our roles in service to our fellow humans, and become living temples of unity. A meaning growth unfolds through both self‑discovery and collective effort, and one cannot truly flourish without the other. Come open and prepared to learn, to offer your gifts, and to be strengthened by the power of community.

Contra dance with Big Scioty on March 7 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Frank Buschelmann**
**Band: The Rosenthorns**
**Big Scioty Contra Dance**
**temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/)
Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!

Fun Friday: EPiC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT vs SCREAM 7 at Lennox Phoenix!
Our Fun Friday event just got better! Our event has been expanded to include your choice of TWO great films: EPIC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT or SCREAM 7! EPiC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT is directed by Baz Luhrmann and uses rare and previously unseen interviews and videos of Elvis in concert to create “one of the most exciting concert films you’ve ever seen!” SCREAM 7 assembles previous cast members and great newcomers for the next chapter of one of the most reliable horror franchises! In this film, a new Ghostface killer emerges with the daughter of Sidney Prescott becomes the next target. Here are details, trailers and our plan for this event:
EPiC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT uses rare and previously unseen interviews and concert footage to create “one of the most exciting concert films you’ve ever seen!” In addition to the stellar reviews, the film was runner up for the People’s Choice Award for Documentaries at the Toronto Film Festival. The film is earning a Certified Fresh 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes (and a 99% positive rating audiences)! The RT site declares, “Resurrecting Elvis Presley at the peak of his showmanship, Baz Luhrmann's truly epic concert documentary restores some joy into The King's legacy.” Film Threat adds, “The most beautiful thing about EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert is that in connecting us so intimately to the man and showing him in all his complexity, Luhrmann cuts through the baggage we bring and gives us a fresh look at one of the most fascinating and accomplished musicians who has ever lived.” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmqWusmzp0k
SCREAM 7: This is an opening night showing of next chapter in one of the best and most reliable horror franchises! In this film, Sidney Prescott has built a new life in the quiet town of Pine Grove, Indiana, until a new Ghostface killer begins to target her daughter, forcing her to face her past to end the killings once and for all. The stellar ensemble case includes Neve Campbell, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Courteney Cox all reprising their roles from the previous films, along with Isabel May, Anna Camp, Mckenna Grace, Asa Germann, Celeste O'Connor and Joel McHale! For EITHER MOVIE, please purchase your ticket for the 6:30pm showing and meet in the lobby area between 6:10 and 6:20pm. Advance ticket purchase advised. Once you have yours please list your movie of choice and seat number in the Comments section of this event.
