As one of Australia’s fastest growing water sports, dragon boating is truly unique as men and women of all ages can train and compete together in one crew. We welcome new members regardless of gender or fitness level (minimum age is 12 years). Come along and try dragon boating with one of Australia's top teams for FREE! Want to get outside and try something new? Exercise with good company? maybe challenge yourself in a team environment? Come paddle with us! Join us - **Southern Storm Paddle Club** - for a Saturday morning session to give Dragon Boating a go! **Introduction session** We host an introduction session regularly on Saturday mornings — 8.30 to 10.30.am at 912 Collins St, Docklands VIC 3008. For the first part of the session, we will provide you a safety briefing and some demonstrations on basic paddling technique. Then you will join our club for their regular \*on water\* training session. There will be a small coffee catch up after the session at the nearby café. Once you complete the introduction session, you can join us on regular weekday trainings and ***paddle for free for 30 days*** (with a valid Dragon pass - free to register). **To join us**, simply RSVP to the event on Meetup and email/message your contact details (email or phone number) to our host if this is your first time attending the session. We will provide a PFD (life jacket) and paddle. We recommend you bring a drink bottle, sun protection and clothes for change as you may get wet in the boat. There are shower facilities and lockers at the boat hub. More specifics will be provided to you the day before the event! **Can't make it** on Saturday session? Plus, fewer cars means less parking stress and a smoother start for everyone. For passengers, it’s the easiest way to get to the trail, meet new people and enjoy the ride together instead of travelling alone. In our Wilderness Seekers Victoria community, many people are more than happy to help out those without cars it’s part of what makes these days feel so welcoming and connected. ✨ Best practice: Passengers should try to secure transportation before purchasing a ticket to avoid any last-minute stress. **Important Carpooling Note** Drivers and passengers should stick with the arrangements they make. Hi All Having recently led a group of 9 in completing the Overland Track in Tasmania, I’m looking to expand my horizons and do my first international hike. Not too far, but thinking across the ditch to do some world class walks in New Zealand’s Southern Island. I’m very keen on the following Great Walks. 1. **Milford Track** \- Billed as ‘the finest walk in the world' \- Take a journey along valleys carved by glaciers\, wander through ancient rainforests and admire cascading waterfalls\. You’ll follow a historic route through Fiordland National Park\, part of Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area\, before reaching your final destination\, the spectacular Milford Sound/Piopiotahi\. 53.5km over 4 days/3 nights and staying in huts along the way. Note that both of these hikes can be taken leaving Queenstown and I am envisaging a rest day in Queenstown between hikes to rest, recover, restock and sleep before the second hike, **Bookings for the Great Walks** go on sale for the Routeburn on the 22nd of May and Milford on the 28th May. I will be on-line to make the group bookings as soon as the bookings open and will do my best to secure the bookings as discussed above. I’m hoping to make a group booking for around 10 people on these dates, so if intending in coming I will need payment for the hut fees by the 20th May. An exact itinerary will be worked out once the huts are booked, although I am thinking of including a 2 night stay in Queenstown between hikes to rest, recuperate, eat and restock. **Approximate Major Cost:** $1854 - $2500 Refer to attached image showing price discovery as at 14/04/2025. Note this is just to give an idea on costs, actual costs will vary with exchange rates and also we may be able to organize group booking discounts etc. Also will depend upon accommodation and flights options to be discussed and considered as a group. I've assumed an early flight (6am, cheapest @ $375) and three nights budget accommodation in Queenstown. Happy to reconsider these options after further discussion with those that sign-up. Volunteers to help research/organize these options would also be awesome - divide and conquer so they say! Also expect bookings for Flights, Travel Accommodation to be organized via the Whatsapp group throughout June/July. I’m not sure if things will book out, so we will book early, as a group to make sure everything runs smoothly. Further payments will therefore be required as we organize these together. **Dates of Travel:** I understand that the ideal time to hike these tracks is in February, so my intention is to make the hut booking for Late February, Early March 2026. Exact dates to be confirmed once huts are locked in. Effort will be taken to avoid NZ school and public holidays. **Training and Lead-up Practice Hikes:** As with the Overland track I will organize a series of practice hikes in the months leading up to this hike. **Summary** For this event, we will do the [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at [The Wilds](https://www.thewilds.org/), a ten-thousand acre conservation center in Muskingum County. It is the largest such center in North America and one of the largest in the entire world. During this tour, we'll visit The Wilds' rhino herd in their state-of-the-art heated barns and learn how The Wilds' animal management team takes care of one of the largest herds of rhinos outside of Africa and Asia. **The date and time of this tour** We will be doing the 1:00 p.m. [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) on Saturday, February 28. The tour is scheduled to last 90 minutes. **What you need to do to attend** Signing up here on Meetup will not get you into The Wilds for the tour. You must go out to The Wilds' [website](https://www.thewilds.org/) and [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour). Please [purchase your ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour), then sign up here on Meetup so I know how many to expect. **Attendance cap** There are only eight total slots/tickets available for this tour. As I obviously have already bought one of the tickets, that leaves seven spaces for everyone else. Since their website is obviously public, nothing prevents other people having nothing to do with *GOhio!* from buying their own tickets, thereby potentially taking an available slot away from you. **Additional notes on attendance** I have now run several events at The Wilds. While the location of The Wilds and the pricing of the tickets generally leads to small turnouts, the people who have gone have all enjoyed it and were glad they went. If you've never been to The Wilds and you like zoos or animals at all, you are likely to find any tour at The Wilds to be a rewarding experience. **Tickets and pricing** [Tickets](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) for this tour are $95, or $76 if you're a Wilds' member. I've posted screen shots, below, to help you be sure you're buying tickets for the correct event. Wilds' memberships pay for themselves if you go to The Wilds at least twice a year, and [Columbus Zoo members](https://www.columbuszoo.org/membership) get a discount on memberships to The Wilds. I will always run at least two events a year at The Wilds. Tickets for all Wilds' tours must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance of the actual tour. **Cancellations and refunds** Per The Wilds' [Cancellation Policy](https://www.thewilds.org/policies): *In order to be eligible for refund and accrue no rescheduling fees, cancellations must be made at least 14 days in advance of reservation. Please try to be there by 12:30 p.m. For most Wilds' tours, a shuttle bus will take you to the actual spot of the tour. So think of this as though you're going to the airport to catch a flight. It helps to be on time. The Wilds generally asks that people arrive at least thirty minutes because the scheduled start time of their tour. **GPS / Getting to The Wilds** The Wilds is in a very rural area, but I've never had a problem getting there with my GPS (I have Verizon). I've also uploaded a JPG map, below, of Muskingum County. Sometimes, though, it's hard to get a signal when you're at The Wilds and getting ready to leave. So you might want to consider downloading an offline map in Google Maps. Your cell phone should pick up a signal, however, within a few minutes after you leave. The Wilds' Visitor Center does have free Wi-Fi. **Carpooling?** If you want to carpool, I recommend discussing this in the comments, below, to this event. While I don't myself carpool, I will do what I can to help you arrange something if I can. **The weather** Dress for the weather. Just because the barn is heated doesn't mean it will be warm. And wear closed-toed shoes. Wilds' tours typically run no matter what the weather is. **After the tour** Once we're done with the rhinos, we'll head over to the very highly rated [Y-Bridge Brewing Company](https://ybridgebrewing.com/). The brewery is about thirty minutes from The Wilds, and it will be on the way back to Columbus for most, if not all, of us.
