Birding by Ear for Beginners especially for Blind and Low Vision participants!
Birding by Ear for Beginners especially for Blind and Low Vision participants!
We will take a very slow walk throughout Alcova Heights Park, which is very flat and has wide pathways. The group leader will use a pair of binoculars if necessary, and seeing participants may use binoculars as well. However, our goal will be for both seeing and blind/low vision persons to hear, identify, and learn the sounds of the birds in the park and potentially develop mnemonics for the bird calls. You might be surprised to find how quickly you will learn the sounds of bird species! We will be aided by the Merlin app, and the group leader will record our bird observations in the eBird app. Over time, we will be able to query eBird to see our growing birding expertise! Participants wishing to use eBird and Merlin type apps, please download them and create accounts ahead of time; we won’t have time to do that during the event.

· The Aeronauts · by Tom Harper @ Duncan Library
· The Aeronauts · by Tom Harper @ Duncan Library
Oddball Cinema is pleased to begin a series of Oddball Adventures at James Duncan Library: movies that take the viewer into strange and unexpected places, some real, some imaginary. With a few liberties taken by the writers for dramatic effect, our first feature is based on actual events. In 1862 a young scientist (who would establish the field of meteorology) ascends in a balloon to study the upper atmosphere. Although his pilot on the historic flight was a man, in this feature the pilot is a woman based largely on a professional French balloonist of the era. As the two of them soar to an altitude never before attained, they face unexpected hazards and must resort to heroic measures to survive. The actual flight takes a little more than an hour, and once it begins, it is presented in real time. ■ Title — *The Aeronauts* ■ Director — Tom Harper ■ Cast — Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne, Himesh Patel ■ Rating — PG-13 ■ ©2019 \| 1h 40m \| Action\, Adventure\, Comedy\, Drama\, Romance
