The Science of Motivation: Drive, Curiosity and Your Brain (tickets on LUMA)
The Science of Motivation: Drive, Curiosity and Your Brain (tickets on LUMA)
Why do some goals light you up while others die the moment you write them down? Why does a robot programmed to "want" things behave nothing like a human who *actually* does? Is there, in-fact, a mathematical law behind curiosity? At our next Growth Lab Live, we're sitting down with one of Barcelona's leading computational neuroscientists, Dr. Rubén Moreno-Bote, to break open the science of motivation in a way that's genuinely useful. **[TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED VIA LUMA TO ATTEND.](https://luma.com/ojiwgc14?utm_source=MEETUP)** We throw the word "motivation" around constantly but almost nobody stops to ask what it actually is. Is it a drive? A goal? A feeling? Turns out, those are very different things, and understanding the difference changes how you approach pretty much everything. Dr. Moreno-Bote will walk us through the neuroscience and the surprisingly elegant logic underneath it, keeping the maths friendly and the takeaways sharp. On the night we'll cover: * The real difference between drives, goals and intrinsic motivation, and why conflating them holds you back * The paradoxes hiding inside how we make decisions and what they reveal about how motivation actually works * A beginner-friendly look at the mathematics of curiosity (yes, it exists, no, you don't need a calculator) * Can a robot be genuinely curious? AI, Asimov's Robot Laws and what the answer means for us **About the speaker** Rubén Moreno-Bote is a Full Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and director of the Theoretical and Cognitive Neuroscience Group at the Center for Brain and Cognition. His lab works at the intersection of neuroscience and AI, using physics, reinforcement learning and brain science to model how intelligent behaviour emerges. His recent research, published in Nature Communications, centres on what he calls the Maximum Occupancy Principle: a framework explaining how complex, exploratory behaviour grows out of intrinsic motivation. In short, he studies why curious, driven people act the way they do, and what the rest of us can take from that. **Agenda:** * Doors open: 7.15pm * Workshop starts: 7.30pm * Q&A session: 8.30pm * Drinks & Networking on the terrace: 9.00pm **Tickets: [https://luma.com/d4dhst3l?utm-source-meetup](https://luma.com/ojiwgc14?utm_source=MEETUP)** **[Growth Lab: Unlock Your Potential](https://www.growth-lab.live/)** Join us at Growth Lab, where ambitious minds gather to explore ideas that fuel personal and professional growth. Each session dives into powerful strategies and insights across psychology, philosophy, longevity, economics, and cutting-edge tech — designed to help you unlock your best self. Expect thought-provoking talks, interactive discussions, and a community of like-minded individuals dedicated to bettering themselves. Whether you're seeking inspiration, new skills, or meaningful connections, Growth Lab is your space to grow. * **Follow us on Instagram: [@Growthlablive](https://www.instagram.com/growthlablive/)** * **Join our Meetup Group: [Growth Lab | Barcelona Talks & Events](https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-hkqcaxmp/)**

Being the only researcher, or part of a small research team, often means carrying the weight of user advocacy entirely on your shoulders. The Barcelona tech ecosystem is fueled by fast-moving startups and agile product teams, but that reality can sometimes leave UX researchers managing backlogs and advocating for stakeholder buy-in without a massive support system. Join us as we interview a panel of UXRs who have successfully built their company's research culture from within a lean team. We will dive into their firsthand experiences and talk through real-world playbooks for strategic roadmap influence. Expect thoughtful discussions on how to democratize your insights, scale your impact across the organization, and drive high-fidelity product decisions. Whether you are a team of one or navigating the growing pains of a small team, bring your questions, your challenges, and your stories. See you there!
ENGLISH! WEDNESDAY / The Central House - Philosophy Meetup: 19:30h - 21h
ENGLISH! WEDNESDAY / The Central House - Philosophy Meetup: 19:30h - 21h
Hi and welcome to our next Socrates Café philosophy meetup! Do you have a hunger for deeper understanding of yourself and the world? Do you value deep, honest and respectful dialogue? If yes, then this meetup will be very interesting for you. • WHAT IS A MEETUP ABOUT? At every meetup we have a discussion using Socratic method: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_method](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_method) We ask, answer and discuss questions and ideas to stimulate critical thinking and to widen our perspectives with new concepts and thoughts. The main purpose of these meetups is to enrich ourselves with the perspectives of others, not to convince others about our own perspectives. Our meetups are about our own philosophies of life and not necessarily what the great philosophers and academics have said or written. It is not a debating club or a platform for proselytizing. Instead, we place the emphasis on questioning, open mindedness and challenging our own assumptions while listening to and respecting the views shared by others. A Socrates Café meetup is considered a success when participants leave a discussion with many more questions than they had at the beginning. • WHAT TOPIC IS DISCUSSED AT THE MEETUP? Participants suggest topics at the beginning of each meeting. We then vote and choose that event's most popular topic for discussion. No academic training in philosophy necessary; just enthusiasm for exchanging ideas and points of view. Some examples of subjects chosen on previous meetups: * What ideals are worth dying for? * Why are we never satisfied? * Why is it that human beings know that the society is going wrong, leaders are well informed about it and things continue as is? * Is identity necessary? * How can it be that people in democratic societies are so obsessed with power? (Desire to be different, better, stronger than others) * What is friendship? • WHO PARTICIPATES AT THIS MEETUP? Anybody is more than welcome to join our meetups. Our events gather people from different backgrounds, different cultures, while no philosophical background is mandatory. Our usual participants are people that have a hunger for deeper understanding of themselves and the world. People that value deep, honest and respectful dialogue. The inspiration for Socrates Cafe originates with the book of the same name, written by the philosopher Christopher Phillips. (Socrates Cafe: A Fresh Taste of Philosophy, 2002). Phillips felt that the Socratic method of dialogue and discussion should be practiced not just in academic settings, but among everyday people interested in examining deep questions together. Hundreds of Socrates Cafe groups now exist around the world.
Vente y hablamos. Rafa. \-\-\-\- Hi! Every day there are new ways to learn Spanish, (or any language) new apps, grammar methods, AI, teachers explaining things on videos, and they are all great. If they help you to understand more and to speak better, they are great. The main plan in this group is to improve your Spanish with games, real activities and exercises to speak more. All the games and activities are a good excuse to correct the most difficult/ frequent mistakes: Difficult words, confusing past tenses, prepositions, verbs that mean many things, ser and estar in the past, sentences with two or more verbs, subjuntive, colloquial expressions, and also “cultural" mistakes: How we, Spanish people, use the language in different situations? People participating are (almost always) very nice, and usually leave very positive reviews of the classes. If the plan fits you, come to practice your Spanish and we'll talk about food, travel, work, culture, Internet, local issues, business, news and many more things. There is a contribution to participate of only €10 per person/2-hour class (materials included, drinks not included) or €30 for 4 classes. Let´s talk. Rafa.
