ReactJS Barcelona x Perk Meetup
ReactJS Barcelona x Perk Meetup
A special edition meetup with a very special guest! International speaker Daniel Afonso will talk about the Framework wars and what he learned from them! Don't miss out! 🚀 ────────── **18:30: Welcome** **18:45 Intro by Host Neciu Dan** **19:00 React-Driven Development: Career Lessons from the Framework Wars** Speaker: Daniel Afonso, Senior Developer Advocate at PagerDuty "No one uses what I built!" "Why can't I get support to do this?" "I don't even know why we're using that?" "Why am I always the one doing everything?" Sound familiar? The truth is, friction is ever-present in our careers — in our influence, processes, relationships, and even the code we ship. But we're rarely taught how to handle it. Here's the fun fact: React's history is full of lessons in dealing with friction. From the early skepticism around JSX and the Virtual DOM to the chaos of Server Components, the React team has navigated many friction points you'll face: skeptical stakeholders, unclear messaging, delayed initiatives, and the challenge of getting buy-in. So let's recap the highlights since its birth to the latest release, understand what React got right (and wrong), and extract practical takeaways you can apply to your career, team, and developer experience initiatives. Whether you're leading a team, building internal tools, or advocating for a technical decision, you'll leave with concrete strategies for driving change, building trust, and shipping initiatives that actually get adopted. **20:00: Drinks and networking!** Do you want to talk at this meetup? Reach out to Dan Neciu [on LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/neciudan/) And please help us spread the news and grow the community: **21:15 Meetup finished** **(FOR EARLY ACCESS: WE ALWAYS POST FIRST ON SOCIAL MEDIA)** [Twitter(X)](https://x.com/ReactJsBCN) [BlueSky](https://bsky.app/profile/reactbarcelona.bsky.social) [LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/company/reactjs-barcelona/) [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reactjs_barcelona/) ────────── **Sponsors:** Perk The intelligent platform for travel and spend. At Perk, we call it shadow work. By automating bookings, expenses, and invoice processing, Perk takes care of shadow work so your teams can get down to business—all while keeping you in control. !ENGLISH! THURSDAY / Opera Cafe - Philosophy Meetup: 19:30h - 21:00
!ENGLISH! THURSDAY / Opera Cafe - Philosophy Meetup: 19:30h - 21:00
Hi and welcome to our next Socrates Café philosophy meetup! Do you have a hunger for deeper understanding of yourself and the world? Do you value deep, honest and respectful dialogue? If yes, then this meetup will be very interesting for you. • WHAT IS A MEETUP ABOUT? At every meetup we have a discussion using Socratic method: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_method We ask, answer and discuss questions and ideas to stimulate critical thinking and to widen our perspectives with new concepts and thoughts. The main purpose of these meetups is to enrich ourselves with the perspectives of others, not to convince others about our own perspectives. Our meetups are about our own philosophies of life and not necessarily what the great philosophers and academics have said or written. It is not a debating club or a platform for proselytizing. Instead, we place the emphasis on questioning, open mindedness and challenging our own assumptions while listening to and respecting the views shared by others. A Socrates Café meetup is considered a success when participants leave a discussion with many more questions than they had at the beginning. • WHAT TOPIC IS DISCUSSED AT THE MEETUP? Participants suggest topics at the beginning of each meeting. We then vote and choose that event's most popular topic for discussion. No academic training in philosophy necessary; just enthusiasm for exchanging ideas and points of view. Some examples of subjects chosen on previous meetups: * What ideals are worth dying for? * Why are we never satisfied? * Why is it that human beings know that the society is going wrong, leaders are well informed about it and things continue as is? * Is identity necessary? * How can it be that people in democratic societies are so obsessed with power? (Desire to be different, better, stronger than others) * What is friendship? • WHO PARTICIPATES AT THIS MEETUP? Anybody is more than welcome to join our meetups. Our events gather people from different backgrounds, different cultures, while no philosophical background is mandatory. Our usual participants are people that have a hunger for deeper understanding of themselves and the world. People that value deep, honest and respectful dialogue. The inspiration for Socrates Cafe originates with the book of the same name, written by the philosopher Christopher Phillips. (Socrates Cafe: A Fresh Taste of Philosophy, 2002). Phillips felt that the Socratic method of dialogue and discussion should be practiced not just in academic settings, but among everyday people interested in examining deep questions together. Hundreds of Socrates Cafe groups now exist around the world. Monty's World: What a dog teaches us about consciousness
Monty's World: What a dog teaches us about consciousness
What is it like to be a dog? In this session we'll spend an hour in the world of my dog Monty. We will consider his extraordinary nose, his vision, and the strange new neuroscience of how he perceives. We will use that as a way into one of the deepest questions in philosophy: what consciousness actually is, and why it's so hard to explain through science. This session will be led by James. A relatively recent book on the subject I can recommend is *Being You: A New Science of Consciousness* by Anil Seth. A good overall review of philosophy related to consciousness is *Philosophers on Consciousness: Talking about the Mind (Talking about Philosophy)* by Jack Symes. Bring wine/beer/drinks/food/snacks/whatever if you want to. **Our events fill up very quickly. To avoid missing out on future events, join the WhatsApp group via this link:** [https://tally.so/r/w4G5L5](https://tally.so/r/w4G5L5) Press the buzzer marked Semi sotano 2 to be let in. Energy Based Reasoning
Energy Based Reasoning
Two weeks ago Yann LeCun and his team at New Yourk University published a paper http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/publis/pdf/lecun-06.pdf aimed to tackle a fundamental problem of AI -- world model, an obstacle that can keep us at the current level of LLM-s for potentialy centures, or can take us to singularity if it will be solved. To do this LeCun used EBM -- energy base models instead of classical probabilistic densities. We are planning to discuss energy based reasoning from mathematical point of view and also discuss connected technologies and their perspectives. Main article that we will discuss https://openreview.net/pdf?id=ZBj3Qp1bYg This is part of the scientific paper reading club. Presenter: Anier Velasco Sotmayor, teacher at Harbour Space Institute of Technology language of the meeting: English. Entrance donation: 15 eur

**ON ENS TROBEM?** Centre Cívic Drassanes [https://maps.app.goo.gl/hMzFvMG8x864Tsyf6](https://maps.app.goo.gl/hMzFvMG8x864Tsyf6) **QUAN ENS TROBEM** Els divendres de 19:15 a 20:45 Si us plau, arribeu a temps.

LLM Showdown: ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Local Models
LLM Showdown: ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Local Models
Join us for a practical, beginner-friendly guide to choosing the right large language model. We’ll compare major models like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Llama, talk about when to use hosted APIs versus local models, and break down the tradeoffs around cost, speed, quality, privacy, context windows, coding ability, and reliability. You’ll leave with a clearer mental model for picking an LLM based on your actual use case instead of hype, benchmarks, or brand names. No deep AI background required. LOGISTICS AND PARKING: The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks! The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
