In Search of True Friendship (Free Event)
**MLK Library - Room 401A**
Why do so many of us feel like we are alone when we have so many more ways of connecting with others than ever before? Are we missing out on forming true friendships by failing to consider the spiritual impulse for those connections?
It seems to be our instinct – and need – to be connected to others. But we also seem to have created increasingly fractured and isolating social structures that don’t actually require us to build those connections – much less with anyone who may look or think differently than we do. So how might recognizing our reality as spiritual beings, as all of us being part of one human family, help us understand where this instinct comes from – and what we need to fulfill it? How might it inform the types and qualities of relationships we look for – and who with? And beyond our individual relationships, what would it look like to reconfigure our communities to make finding and building connection easier for all of us? How can we create a culture of community that supports everyone in this search, that allows every individual to thrive not despite but with and because of the larger diversity of people around them? What are the spiritual principles and qualities we need to build and nurture these diverse, inclusive, and connected communities?
Come join a different kind of conversation – one that welcomes every perspective in a search for the deeper truths that unite us – as we discuss the spiritual perspective offered by the Bahá’í Teachings on the search for true friendship. Please join us for a lively discussion as we explore how we can build true community together.
*“Do not be content with showing friendship in words alone, let your heart burn with loving kindness for all who may cross your path.”* – Bahá’í Teachings

Washington DC Gay Men Dating From Home
**🏳️🌈 Live Video Gay Speed Dating for Washington DC Gay People Done with Apps — Verified Locals**
You get to work through live one-on-one Zoom rounds with gay people from Washington DC sorted by age and compatibility, with a real host running the session throughout.
Prior to the event, you complete a brief compatibility form — that data drives the matching to connect you with Washington DC gay singles who fit your profile, so your conversations have a better chance of going somewhere.
Once the event finishes, we send out mutual matches — with nothing shared unless both parties agreed — and you reach out whenever you are ready.
**Age-grouped registration — select yours:**
- **Ages 18-32** → [REGISTER HERE](https://tempodating.com/product?productId=507.0&productType=onlineSpeedDatingGay&city=Washington%20DC&groupurlname=local-gay-men-connecting-through-culture&ar=18-32&face_v=2.0)

1. **Select your age range** – via the link for your age group above, then take the brief personality quiz, since that is what confirms your place.
2. **Show up on Zoom** – via the Zoom link when the event begins, zero setup is required — just open the link, and from that moment the host runs the whole show.
3. **Meet your matches** – short Zoom speed dating rounds with compatible Washington DC gay singles in your bracket, with a friendly host making sure every round feels easy, given that the matching was done before the evening started.
4. **Find your matches** – we share mutual match results after the session closes, with mutual-only sharing meaning no awkward one-sided messages, and the follow-up is yours to manage however feels right.

D-Day in Old Town Alexandria; early diner afterwards
Let's recognize the 82th anniversary of the WWII D-Day landings at Normandy (France).
Hosted by the **Alexandria-Caen (France) Sister City Committee**, this ceremony and commemoration event takes place on John Carlyle Square in Old Town.
There will be re-enactors, historical displays, a 1940's jazz band and swing dancing, the US Army Fife and Drum Corps and more.
I was stationed in Paris for 25 months and attended the 20th Anniversary of the Liberation of Paris, 24 August 1964. I was in a photograph on the front page of the NY Herald Tribune along with 400,000 other people crammed onto the Place de la Concorde. **WOW!**
D-Day, June 6, 1944, marked the largest amphibious invasion in military history and the beginning of the Allied liberation of Nazi-occupied France. Known as Operation Neptune, the assault was the opening phase of Operation Overlord, the broader campaign to liberate Northwest Europe. Under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, more than 156,000 Allied troops from the United States, Great Britain, and Canada landed along the Normandy coast across five beaches: Utah and Omaha (U.S.), Gold and Sword (British), and Juno (Canadian).
Despite fierce German resistance, particularly at Omaha Beach, where some of the most intense fighting occurred, the Allies secured a foothold in Normandy by nightfall. The cost was heavy, with more than 4,500 Allied troops killed on the first day, including 2,499 Americans.
Their sacrifice paved the way for the capture of Cherbourg, the battle for Caen, and the decisive Falaise Pocket in August 1944 which shattered German forces in France. Less than a year later, Nazi Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945.
Though “D-Day” is a general military term for the launch of an operation, its scale and significance have made June 6, 1944, forever synonymous with courage, sacrifice, and a decisive turning point in World War II in Europe.
Did you know? Most every French village in western France has a street named after its **DAY**! rue du 15 juin 1944; avenue du 5 juillet 1944; boulevard du 10 août 1944...the **DAY** of its liberation from German occupiers, as Allied forces swept through.
A trip to Normandie is a required addition to everyone's bucket list. I'm a regular visiteur.
Meet in front of Panera Bread, 350 Dulany Street, Alexandraia, VA 22314
We'll have an early diner together afterward at The Executive Diner, 1400 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.

Book summary:
On a hot day in Bethlehem, a twelve-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.
