What Is a Fair Society?
**What Is a Fair Society?**
Justice is one of the most fundamental — and often contested — ideas in society. In a world shaped by inequality, opportunity, and competing interests, what would a truly fair society look like? Should fairness mean equality for all, or is some inequality acceptable? And if so, on what basis?
Drawing on the work of John Rawls, this session explores the idea that a fair society is one we would choose if we did not know our own place within it. From this perspective, Rawls argues that inequality is only justified if it improves the situation of those who are worst off, offering a powerful way of thinking about fairness, opportunity, and social responsibility.
The session will begin with a short introduction (around 10 minutes) to set out the key ideas. After that, the emphasis is on discussion and participation. The aim is to create a space where ideas can be explored together, with time for questions, reflection, and open conversation.
No prior knowledge is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to think together.
**Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room)
**NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm
**Format:** 10-minute intro talk → vote on questions → small-group discussions → share insights with the whole room
**Discounts**: If cost is a barrier, we want to make the session as accessible as possible. If you are a student, unemployed, or on a low income, please feel free to send me a direct message to get a reduced-price place.
**Refunds:** If you are unable to attend and would like a refund, please send me a direct message at least 48 hours before the event. Unfortunately, I’m not able to offer refunds for cancellations made after this point, as it becomes difficult to reallocate places at short notice.

Moral blind spots
NOTE: the pub does not charge for our space on the understanding that we all purchase something from the bar. Please support them.
I'll be there from around 7pm if anyone would like a social chat before we get started. **Please arrive in time for a prompt start at 7:30.**
Moral blind spots are cases where people or societies sincerely see themselves as decent, yet fail to notice serious wrongs embedded in their own beliefs or practices. They are not usually a matter of explicit cruelty but of systematic inattention, rationalisation, and social normalisation. Institutions such as slavery, public torture, and the legal subordination of women were once treated as natural or even virtuous, and only later recognised as grave injustices. The idea of a “blind spot” highlights this gap between self-image and moral reality.
We can distinguish several patterns here. Sometimes people literally lack crucial concepts or facts, and so cannot yet see an issue as moral at all (a kind of genuine moral ignorance). Sometimes they see the facts but interpret them in purely technical or economic terms, so the ethical dimension drops out of view. In other cases they do register some unease, but resolve the tension through rationalisation, group loyalty, or deference to authority, pushing doubts to the margins of attention. There are also cases where people know something is wrong yet remain silent from fear, convenience, or career incentives; the silence of many then helps the blind spot persist as if nothing were wrong.
This topic connects closely with classic debates about moral realism and relativism, because talk of “blind spots” and “moral progress” seems to presuppose that some practices are genuinely worse or better, even when insiders think otherwise. It also raises questions about responsibility under moral ignorance: to what extent are individuals or cultures blameworthy for wrongs they could not easily recognise at the time? Psychological research on ethical blindness underlines how framing, overconfidence in one’s own goodness, diffusion of responsibility, and distance from victims all make moral failures more likely and less visible.
Thinking about moral blind spots naturally leads to the idea of moral progress and “future-proofing.” Many accounts describe history as a gradual expansion of the circle of beings we take seriously: across lines of class, gender, race, species, and now perhaps even to ecosystems or AIs. If we suspect we too, as individuals and as a society, have our own serious blind spots, what should the appropriate response be? Some possibilities at the institutional level might include: practices that amplify dissenting voices, protect whistleblowers, foster open debate, and build in ethical reflection to professional and political life. For us as individuals, perhaps Cafe Philo discussions like this one could be one small step towards reducing our own blind spots?
**Questions to ponder**:
* What practices of today might look as obviously wrong to our descendants as slavery or child labour look to us?
* Are societies with moral blind spots blameworthy in the same way as individuals?
* Can we be responsible for what we cannot yet see as wrong?
* Which current institutions are most vulnerable to moral blind spots, and why?
* If we really believed we had serious moral blind spots now, what concrete habits would we adopt to address this?

First meeting of London "What do we want as a Sustainable Planet?"
The world is in crisis and many people think we've gone past the tipping point and the planet is doomed.
However, there are those who have hope and faith in science that some can survive the polycrisis and get to live in a sustainable society and planet.
But there's a problem... **There's no clear vision of what a sustainable society and planet should be**, and without that destination, how can we set out on the journey to get there?
Please join like-minded people to discuss this. We'll agree an agenda at the start of the meeting.
Bring an open mind, suggestions and perhaps a pad of paper.
**Here are some topics to be covered.**
Please use the comments/chat to suggest other areas for consideration
*Depending on the mood of attendees, the frequency of further meetups can be agreed.*
**WHAT DO WE WANT A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY AND PLANET TO LOOK AND FEEL LIKE?**
· A planet with clean atmosphere, oceans and soil with systems in place to keep them that way
· The abolition of poverty and hunger
· Equality of opportunity for all to achieve a peaceful and contented life without fear of physical or other violence
· Access to healthcare, hygiene and sanitation for all
· Access to quality education for all
· A more responsible system of financial structures which embraces the best of co-operative production, capitalism and other systems
· A safe justice system for all
· Societies which respect for the diversity of opinion, ethnicity, sexuality, religion
· Respect for the natural resources and fragility of Planet Earth and their finite capacity
· Societies where the more fortunate, stronger and healthier help those less strong, less fortunate or less healthy.
· Peaceful co-existence between the varying communities of the planet
**What Freedoms ?**
· Freedom to travel anywhere
· Freedom to worship (should there be limitation such as worship should not be based on destroying the existing system…??)
· Freedom from violence
· Freedom from hate
· Freedom from poverty (how define?)
· Freedom of speech
· Freedom from anxiety about the future
· Freedom from concentration of power
· Freedom to preserve culture and arts
· Freedom to make decisions about one’s body
· Freedom to seek representation and to represent others
· Freedom to be different
· Freedom to be heard

Guy Debord, Society of the Spectacle: PART TWO [Chapters 3-6]
***"In this complex and terrible development which has carried the epoch of class struggles toward new conditions, the proletariat of the industrial countries has completely lost the affirmation of its autonomous perspective and also, in the last analysis, its illusions, but not its being. It has not been suppressed. It remains irreducibly in existence within the intensified alienation of modern capitalism[.]"***
**\- Guy Debord\, *The Society of the Spectacle***
Welcome back readers! By popular request, we're bringing back (for a new generation of LMRG readers) an old favourite: the always-relevant Guy Debord and his masterful *Society of the Spectacle*.
This is meeting two, where we'll be reading the fourth, fifth and sixth chapters.
Find the classic text here: https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/debord/society.htm
Or an alternative, possibly more readable translation here: [https://files.libcom.org/files/The%20Society%20of%20the%20Spectacle%20Annotated%20Edition.pdf](https://files.libcom.org/files/The%20Society%20of%20the%20Spectacle%20Annotated%20Edition.pdf)
Often maligned as theorymaxxed nonsense but little-read, this slim volume is certainly dense with ideas - all of which carry as much relevance today as those half-forgotten postwar years when the Situationist International made its mark on the world, if not more. With the rise of the Internet and social media, the decline of literacy and the closing of the mass mind, the endless doom-loop of doomscrolling and bed-rotting, increasingly performative protest, the commodification of everything, the Epstein-approved culture war, and the theatre of spectacular cruelty that is imperialist colonial policy from Gaza to Venezuela, we really are living an age where everything that was once directly participated in has passed into representation. Every hand-grip one searches for to get some kind of grasp on the world seems to be a mirage; "participation" in anything, from politics to culture, has been reduced to fandom - limited to nothing more than expressing approval or disapproval through totally mediated social media platforms.
Above it all stands an utterly corrupt, irresponsible elite class more and more transparent in how it relishes in conspiratorial play, power-games with unlimited stakes for us and no consequences for them. Such a world where power wears a shit-eating grin and keeps us off our balance by endlessly[ "flooding the zone"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flood_the_zone) (in Steve Bannon's terms) with distractions so intricate they short-circuit the collective brain is exactly what Debord not only predicted but described in frightening detail, with more than a little bit of humour.
So let's dig in and find out: just what can we do to unplug from the spectacle? Is the spectacle even un-plug-from-able? Debord haters, cope and seethe: as a much more orthodox Marxist than he ever gets credit for, there really are some strategies in here. We just need to be creative.
Take care and happy reading!

London Philosophy Collective Symposium / The Paradox of Fiction
An open participation philosophical discussion. No previous philosophical experience necessary
Please follow the stated guidelines
This is a Philosophical Discussion hosted by Joel Janiurek.
We shall be discussing The Paradox of Fiction.
This event is open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary.
The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something?
Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas.
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Keep it Philosophical (No Science, no History, no Sociology, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, no personal anecdotes).
2. Think for Yourself (No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read).
3. Tangents are Cool (Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question).
4. Keep it Succinct (Like this).
5. Be Excellent to Each Other (But of course).
We hope to see you there

Time To Abolish The House of Lords? - Whitechapel Debates
**This House Would Abolish The House of Lords**
**Why Are We Having This Debate?**
The House of Lords has been a source of debate here in the UK for many years. With the country split between those who view lords as a pool of technical experts, business leaders and ultimate check / review for an elected government and those who view it as a wholly unelected, undemocratic problem that needs to abolished to create true democratic representation in the UK.
Currently The Hereditary Peers bill is going through which aims to remove the last 92 hereditary peers and over 1000 years of British political tradition. BUT is tradition something to be held on to or should we be constantly looking for new ways to work in a modern world.
**So we ask** \- Is it time we abolished the House of Lords?

**What We Do**
3v3 panel debate where our members explore the strongest arguments for a given topic.
A debate should tell the audience what they need to know and not just what the speakers think. If you feel the same way, then we want to meet you.
Debate London is the year-round series of free public debates held weekly at venues across the capital. The series is run by Debate London, a social enterprise that helps its members to advance their personal and professional development by teaching them how to debate.
All of our speakers are [Debate London members](https://www.debate.london/plans "https://www.debate.london/plans") who have agreed to defend a particular perspective the audience need to hear, rather than just share their own personal opinion. After presenting the point of view assigned to them, the audience are then given the floor to cross-examine them and share their own position.
The only time we hear what the speakers really think is at the end of the debate when they tell us where they really stand and whether this changed at all while learning how to defend the perspective assigned to them.
**After Debate Social**
After all of our debates we have a post debate hang-out. This is a chance for our community to get to know new people, explore new ideas and generally have more fun as a club! Come along and join us for a post-debate social!
**Venue**
Our venues serve drinks (alcoholic and soft drinks) as well as brilliant food. All can be ordered from the bar
**Do not bring external food or drink into our venues you will be asked to throw it away or to finish it outside. - This is a venue rule which we need to follow.**
