Shoo Shoo O Winter Blues: Cards and Games at Cleveland Park Library
Shoo Shoo O Winter Blues: Cards and Games at Cleveland Park Library
Want someplace nice and quiet to hang, with good company and good food after? Then come to the Cleveland Park Library at 3310 Connecticut Ave NW in Washington, DC! Just blocks away from the Cleveland Park Metro on the Red Line, the library is located in a safe and accessible neighborhood. I will post any service changes next week. If you have trouble finding the place or are running late, please call or text me at 202-802-3238. We are meeting in the large conference room on the second floor. LUNCH Fat Pete's BBQ, located at 3407 Connecticut Ave NW (across the street and a block over from the library), has great food for every taste. Yes, this means they have many other things besides BBQ! More importantly, the owner is autism-friendly. He personally gave me his cell number and told me to call him before we come over. He'll let me know if the place is quiet or noisy at a particular time. If the place is too noisy, there are other places to eat as well. LIBRARY POLICIES Per fire code, we can only have a maximum of 20 people. Don't worry; if you end up on the waitlist, you can still join us for lunch afterwards! Per library policies, eating is prohibited. Covered drinks are permitted. Please do not photograph people without their permission. You can bring games if you like. I'm bringing my UNO deck, along with my Powerpuff Girls board game. HEALTH AND SAFETY I will take a COVID test before coming. If I am sick or test positive, I'm staying home. If I test negative and am well, I will be there. The event will still happen in either case. If the weather forecast calls for sleet, significant snow accumulations, ice, and/or wintry mix, I'm cancelling the event. Safety first! See you soon, Jenny

Games Day!
Games Day!
Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated, but not required. I just got mine. I don't want to get any of my friends sick! I will, however, be screening for a standard set of COVID symptoms. If you are showing any symptoms that could make people nervous, please postpone coming to the meetup till you're over it. While sneezing is not a COVID symptom, I think folks would rather not risk getting even a cold right now, so again please don't show up if this is the case, even if you're sure it is just an allergy. On the other hand, no masks are required, although feel free if it'd make you more comfortable. General day of games! Whatever folks feel like playing. Bring your own or learn a new one! If you want to play a longer game, you might want to propose it on the meetup discussion to judge interest. I'll have snacks and soda on hand. Additional snacks or soda welcome. We usually order out for dinner and then continue on till 10pm. The games we usually play tend towards those requiring more thinking than typical family or party games and they are usually in the 2-4 hour range. Photos from past meet ups can give you a sense of them. We do sometimes play lighter games though.

January Discussion - Anything Is Possible (Elizabeth Strout)
January Discussion - Anything Is Possible (Elizabeth Strout)
The book club is kicking off for 2026! Iโ€™m looking forward to seeing some familiar faces again, as well as meeting some new members in the upcoming months. I apologize for the delay in the scheduling of this January meetingโ€”I got sick after New Yearโ€™s and have just started feeling better. Given that delay and the limited time to read the book before the discussion, I selected a book thatโ€™s only about 250 pages and should be a quick read.

Ultimate Frisbee - All Levels
Ultimate Frisbee - All Levels
Just good ole Ultimate Frisbee. Tons of fun. Great group. No stacks. No pick calls (but no picks!!!). Fair warning to those totally new to ultimate: it's a lot of running. \*\*Please pay close attention to the rule #6 listed below. *What to DEFINITELY bring* 1. Running shoes/Cleats 2. One white shirt *and* one dark shirt !!!! See this one !!!! \-\-\- IMPORTANT you can play both dark and white so we can make teams when we get there; just pickup after all ๐Ÿ˜Ž 3. Water *What you can ALSO bring* 4\. Snacks & Drinks 5\. Gloves \(winter\) 6\. Sunscreen \(summer\) 7\. Sunglasses ๐Ÿ˜Ž House Rules - 1. Starting Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of opposite end zone lines. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. 2. Scoring: Each time the offense catches a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. The teams switch direction after every goal, and the next point begins with a new pull by the team that just scored. 3. Movement of the Disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count. 4. Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stalled), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. 5. Substitutions: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout. (Modified depending on the number of the attendees) 6. Non-contact: Players must attempt to avoid physical contact during play. Picks and screens are also prohibited. 7. Fouls: When a player initiates contact that affects the play, a foul occurs. When a foul causes a player to lose possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player that the foul was called against disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. 8. Self-Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. The host will also step in if it is needed. Please message the event host for any questions or concerns. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **Smiley Social documents:** 1. Speak Easy (Storytelling)
Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for February is "Transitions" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
