**âââ**
If you hanker after a really useful item to take home with you, this versatile cabinet is an amazing piece of joinery to learn how to make. Made from seasoned pine, this classic project will teach you how to make an accurate wood frame, with a hinged, panelled door. The completed cabinet is 435mmH x 300mmW x 140mmD.
You will have the opportunity of learning classic joints, such as a mortice and tenon and dovetails, insert a shelf and hang a door, as you build your skills week by week. You will use measuring and marking tools, and hand tools, including chisels, smoothing, plough and rebate planes.
Over 12 weeks, we will cover many aspects of traditional joinery tuition. This content-rich class will suit everybody who wants to learn a lot in a short time.
Len Conway, a very experienced craftsperson and tutor will explain each part of the process and instill lifelong good habits as well as tips for improving accuracy if you have some woodwork experience.
About Len
Len Conway has over forty years of experience in further education. He has taught carpentry, Joinery and multi-skills to a high level. His interests include music, architecture, art, mountain walking and boating.
Friendly Chess in Russell Square
A laid-back lunchtime of friendly chess in the charming surroundings of Russell Square, Bloomsbury. Whether you're new in town and looking to meet new people, craving some social games, or live/work/study nearby, all are welcome.
Chess sets are available to borrow, and there are optional food/drinks from the cafe next to the chess tables. Please don't bring outside food/drinks (other than water), and buy something if you use a cafe table (no need when using the chess tables, which have boards printed on them).
This will be a hosted event - if you're the first to arrive, you'll see your host sitting at one of the chess tables with a chess set.
Feel free to write in the event to confirm you're going and encourage others to come along. Most of those attending are from other social media groups, so numbers are usually higher than they appear here.
Have fun! :)
INTRODUCTION TO FURNITURE MAKING
**Full details and registration via our website âĄď¸** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/introduction-to-furniture-making-8/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/introduction-to-furniture-making-8/)
**âââ**
Our Introduction to Furniture Making is a part-time workshop-based course spread over 38 weeks created to bring the beginner to a level of competence in furniture design, using hand tools and workshop machinery. It provides the development of classic, traditional architectural joinery skills and basic use of our woodwork machines.
This special course is open to just five learners, to maximise the learner/tutor ratio. We supply all of the tools you will need â though we advise you to start building a lifelong collection of your own pieces as you go along.
The Goodlife Centre has been teaching practical woodworking since the centre opened in 2010. We teach traditional skills using hand tools in the same manner that has been handed down for hundreds of years. In addition, this course benefits from our modern woodworking machines where learners will gain experience by using industry-standard wood processing methods.
You will follow the design process through the use of rods, technical drawing and the use of hand and power tools.
The subjects covered range from timber preparation to the completion of several projects within a specific size. (Purchase of hardwood not included)
You will learn:
* how to skilfully use hand tools and sharpening tools
* high standard joinery skills, including cross halvings, dovetails, mortice and tenons, bridle, corner halvings
* how to safely use industry-standard portable power tools including a router
* how to set up and use woodworking machines (Band saw/Table saw/ planer thicknesser/ Crosscut saw/Mortiser in accord with the latest Health and Safety legislation
* how to construct projects such as a basic frame, a pair of trestles, hardwood dovetail bookends, a decorated tray, and a hardwood cabinet of your own design.
The course is paced to help you learn your natural speed of working. The initial part of the course cannot be rushed through. There is no easy path to becoming a good maker and taking the initial projects carefully will give you the underlying skills to clarify your thinking when it comes to later pieces.
The set projects will take you through simple planing and jointing exercises to some basic machine skills. By making yourself a pair of sturdy trestles you will be inducted into the machining area so you can be trusted to use the equipment safely and independently. As you move from project to project you will gain more confidence and independence.

UPHOLSTERY â BRING YOUR OWN CHAIR â WEDNESDAY EVENINGS
**Bookable via our website âĄď¸** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/upholstery-bring-your-own-chair-monday-eve-17/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/upholstery-bring-your-own-chair-monday-eve-17/)
**âââ**
KEY PROJECT: RE-UPHOLSTERING YOUR OWN CHAIR.
Suitable for beginners and fun for advanced learners.
This workshop is led by Krasmira Nikolova, an experienced upholsterer.
We provide the use of all upholstery tools and equipment including compressed air staple guns. Basic upholstery materials that you require for your project will be moderately charged on a pay-as-you-use basis and will be dependent on each chairâs requirements. We can advise you on the purchase of your top fabric and we have a lovely library of fabric samples to help make up your mind. The Goodlife Centre sells all the basic tools and materials for use on projects worked on at home.
This is a fantastic chance to up-cycle and personalise a family piece you have at home or a junk shop find and a great way to immerse yourself into the wonderful world of upholstery.
The course is suitable for both beginners and those who have a basic knowledge but little experience who wish to extend their expertise.
**Choosing a suitable chair**
If you are a newcomer to upholstery, there are a couple of pointers to help you choose a chair to work on. Choose something that has one or two flat planes â a seat and a back â as curves and arms are more complex and take longer to achieve.
The chair on the right was completed in about 12 weeks.
If you are a complete beginner, you could bring something more simple such as an upholstered footstool. More experienced upholsters can bring more complex pieces. Your chair can be traditionally built or modern, but be aware that some modern pieces have been constructed using machinery and are difficult to recreate by hand.
[Click here for a detailed PDF of suitable chairs.](https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2r8UvbQtaH5RTVKUjlBdkhDX3c/view?usp=sharing)
**Please email info@thegoodlifecentre.co.uk with a photo of your chair prior to the course so we can answer any suitability questions and advise if your chair is suitable**.
We have very limited storage at the centre, so we can only store smaller pieces during the course. Please make sure the total dimensions are less than 1000mm high by 750mm wide, with a depth of 750mm.
The use of tools and machinery is included.
All materials will be charged at nominal rates. Some materials will not be kept in stock but can be ordered. Approved projects can be stored at the centre. We cannot offer additional time to work on your project outside of workshop times.

**KEY PROJECT: TRADITIONALLY STITCHED AND SEWN EDGED FOOTSTOOL**
*All of our upholstery classes are for absolute beginners. It doesnât matter which one you choose to take first. Each technique that is offered is part of all the processes that every upholsterer has to learn.*
6-week workshop. Thursday nights. 6:30pm â 9pm.
A perfect course for a beginner. Jumpstart your knowledge of traditional upholstery skills and methods.
Over six Thursday evenings, experienced upholsterers will guide you through the wonderful world of upholstery and help you build a fabulous footstool using traditional methods. You can leave your project at the centre in between classes.
Before the advent of foam in the middle of the twentieth century, the only way to make wooden seats more comfortable was to build up layers using available materials. Our small fabric footstool (above) is built from layers of woven webbing, hessian, vegetable fibre, animal hair and calico and is sewn with specialist needles and stitches. Although this method is more labour-intensive than the modern method of using foam, it is much longer lasting and preferred in more expensive pieces of furniture. This is the method used in many traditional chair seats, so once learned, you can apply this method to your own projects.
We provide everything for the workshop, from the wood frame to the set of natural beech wood legs that are included for you to paint or stain as you wish. Choose from our selection of top fabrics, or bring your own. You will need about a metre of fabric and you will not need it until the final class. The use of all tools and materials is included. We also have a selection of specialist upholstery tools and all the materials that we use in our workshops for sale at the Goodlife Centre for you to continue your new hobby at home.
Beginners welcome.
This course is run on a Thursday evening over 6 consecutive weeks. 6:30pm â 9:00pm
INTRO TO WOODTURNING
**Bookable via our website âĄď¸** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-woodturning-119/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/intro-to-woodturning-119/)
**âââ**
If you have ever seen wood turned on a lathe and been intrigued by the bowls and forms made on it, this one-day workshop will demystify the technique and teach you basic techniques to make a simple bowl and a hardwood barreled pen.
You will be led by expert, Nathan Cardwell who is a passionate woodworker and a patient tutor. When not with us, he teaches woodwork in a London boyâs school. Nathan will introduce the parts of the lathe and explain how to safely secure your work, the methods to use with each chisel and how to sand and finish your projects.
During the day you will learn the âHeadstock methodâ to make a small bowl in hardwood and âSpindle turningâ to make a wooden tube that fits into a metal pen mechanism.
We will supply everything so come with curiosity and enthusiasm and leave with satisfaction, a bowl and a ready-to-use rollerball pen.
We will also advise you on how to continue this fascinating hobby with guidance on buying your own lathe, tools and timber.
HAND CANING FURNITURE
**Bookable via our website âĄď¸** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/hand-caning-furniture-95/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/hand-caning-furniture-95/)
**âââ**
**Also known as Hand, Strand or Hole-to-Hole Caning.**
KEY PROJECT: HAND CANED WOOD FRAME.
Suitable for beginners. Enjoyable for all.
One-day weekend workshop. 10am â 5pm.
Ever seen a great chair in a junk shop but noticed that the caning that spans the seat is sadly coming away at the edges? Sometimes a chair that had been caned has had an unsightly slab of plywood tacked onto the broken seat. This is an opportunity to increase your upholstery know-how and bring a âonce prettyâ seat up to scratch.
Now you will be able to snap up a bargain and re-cane the seat yourself. The task is not as daunting as you think and can be done easily in a domestic setting with no specialist equipment- unless a washing-up bowl and some golf tees could be defined as such.
This is a very old traditional craft, sometimes known as hand, strand or hole-to-hole caning. Specialist split cane is woven from side to side and fixed in place.
During the one-day workshop, upholstery expert Netty Erw will inspire confidence while guiding you through the stages of intertwining the fine split canes. At the end of the day, you will have completed a square panel of traditional caning to take home with pride. The skills learnt during the day will enable you to embark on your own project at home. Netty has learned her skills from her clever aunt Rachael South, who in turn learned from her grandfather. We are thrilled to share in this generation's cascade of talent.
All use of tools and materials supplied. We have a cane to buy after the course if you want to get started as soon as you get home.
Beginners welcome. No previous experience in upholstery is required.
If your chair is wobbly or scuffed â or even repainted, you can come to our â[Intro to Furniture Restoration](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/furniture-restoration-wood-revival/)â day course and learn how to make it look loved and valued again.
