Mindfulness Practice
Mindfulness Practice
Mindfulness Meditation group practice every Wednesday evening at Unity of Gaithersburg. Mindfulness practice is not about achieving some special state of mind; it is more about noticing the experience you are having without trying to change it. This interesting video suggests why you might sit and watch your mind wander off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmmBF8eTl18 This noticing tends to shift your nervous system from a 'fight-or-flight' state to a more relaxed and receptive state. In this receptive mental state, you begin to see your own experience differently and, over time, see other people and the world differently. Also, it is good for you: "the effect of regular meditation on the cortex was so profound that fifty-year-old meditators had a prefrontal cortex that looked like that of a twenty-five-year-old" [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PLRZVTT](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PLRZVTT) Here is an interesting and funny take on meditation by Ajahn Brahm: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR60RRmXeYs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR60RRmXeYs). If you arrive on time, there will be an introduction at the beginning, if you arrive late, find a chair and join us. There will be some discussion after. This is a free event, but contributions to the church's expenses are welcome. You can just show up this Wednesday or subsequent Wednesdays. Meaningful Conversation and Coffee - Northside Social Falls Church
Meaningful Conversation and Coffee - Northside Social Falls Church
**Join us in Falls Church for conversations that go beyond small talk.** Higher Grounds – Falls Church is where this growing network of gatherings began: a space for thoughtful, authentic dialogue about what matters most. Whether we’re exploring the nature of happiness, the challenges and possibilities of midlife, spirituality, culture, capitalism, parenting, or the role of art and travel in a meaningful life, every conversation is shaped by the people in the room. There’s no set leader or rigid agenda—just a shared commitment to listen as much as we speak. We start with brief introductions focused on what makes you *you* (not your LinkedIn bio), then dive straight into whatever is on people’s minds. The direction of each meetup emerges organically, making every event unique. MANDATORY: PLEASE REVIEW OUR COMMUNITY GUIDELINES IN THE GROUP DESCRIPTION. Everyone is expected to engage in respectful conversations and listen deeply as well as share. We have a zero tolerance policy of sexual harassment and hate speech. Come ready to share, reflect, and connect with others in Falls Church who are also seeking deeper conversations. **Suggested Questions: Life Stages & Transitions** 1. **ONLINE** Mindfulness Meditation with Hugh Byrne
**ONLINE** Mindfulness Meditation with Hugh Byrne
**NOW ONLINE** The weekly Sunday morning (10:30 am to 12 noon) class begins with a welcome, short reflection on an aspect of the teachings, and includes an arriving meditation (15 minutes) that will often incorporate poems and may end with a reflection or question. The opening meditation is followed by an invitation to each person to share their name and a few words (for example, what is alive for them right now or what their intention is for the class or the day). The sharing has been a powerful support to help welcome new people, get to know each other, and build community/sangha. Following a brief period of mindful stretching/movement, we finish with a longer meditation (25-30 minutes) and final reflections on the teachings, sharing, Q&A, and announcements. Class participants are welcome to stay and engage with other members of the community or adjourn to a neighboring restaurant or coffee shop. This space is inclusive, everyone is welcome, and we invite you to bring with you all aspects of yourself. Maybe you've heard the word "Mindfulness" and simply want to know what it means. Perhaps you're fresh out of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction class and looking to continue your practice. Or you might be seeking a local "sangha" (kind-hearted individuals who come together to support each other's meditation practice). Whomever you are, wherever you are coming from, this weekly meditation group warmly welcomes all. Each week will include a guided sitting meditation, followed by discussion. Please feel free to bring any questions about your practice. These teachings are freely offered to all. If you would like to to help contribute to the expense of keeping this group running (rental space, tech platform fees, etc), donations are gratefully accepted though cash, PayPal or Venmo ( Jessica ONeill - @mindfullyjessica) Insight Summit is facilitated by Jessica O'Neill, an MBSR and mindfulness instructor who completed training from UMass Medical School's Center for Mindfulness and Healthcare. Jessica offers donation-based community mindfulness programs and works with [Summit Psychological Services](https://www.summitpsychologicalservices.com/jessica-o-neil-mbsr-1) to help bring mindfulness training to individuals, adolescents and couples. WHERE & HOW TO FIND US: Enter Beacon on the side facing Waldron Ave. The single door all the way to the left may be open, but if it's locked, ring the buzzer. There is parking along Waldron Ave or Springfield Ave. * Chairs provided, though if you prefer to sit on the floor, please bring a yoga mat, blanket or cushions. * You do not need to be a member of Beacon to attend. This is a completely independent meditation group. * The Meetup RSVP list doesn't reflect actual attendance since many longtime members attend regularly.
