May Grand Gaming Melee
Isnât life itself a game? Donât you effectively âroll the diceâ when you cross the street, order a product online, buy a movie ticket, take a seat at a restaurant, or agree to a blind date? Philosophers (mostly the ones who play games) agree that the concept, âI am my own meeple,â guides some â perhaps all â of many peopleâs daily activities. As for the others â that is, the philosophers who disagree and/or the people who donât employ this concept in their lives â *get with the program! Itâs time for another Grand Gaming Melee!*
Thereâll be board games, dice games, card games, tile games, and just about every other kind of game that can be played on a tabletop. Youâre encouraged to bring some of your favorites and teach them to new players, but feel free to come without any and play the games others bring. Game designers are welcome to bring their latest creations for a test run. Whether itâs a published edition or a handmade draft, if you see a game youâd like to try, thereâll be someone eager to teach you.
If youâre going to be your own meeple, then youâll need a snack to be a fully energetic one. Please bring something delicious to share with your fellow meeple people: anything easily and neatly consumed at the gaming tables is welcome. Popular delicious items include bags of chips, pretzels, crackers, and cookies. Some people bring a package of doughnuts or cupcakes; these are always popular and disappear quickly. Savory snacks like olives, vegetables with dip, or cheese appeal to players who donât want to spend the entire day snacking on sweets. A few creative types may even bring something homemade; these contributions are even more appreciated. A refrigerator is available to store drinks and other items that should be kept chilled.
Official start time is 10:30am. You can come and go at any time, but your host appreciates anyone who arrives as early as 10:00am (the libraryâs opening time) to help with setup. Many hands make light work! Cleanup begins around 4:00pm (or whenever you decide that you canât squeeze in one more game before the end of the event). Remember, whoever starts cleanup first gets the best choice of leftover snacks to take home!
As always, leave the room clean and tidy.
**Please observe these rules regarding cleanup at Beatley library:**
* Please ensure that food scraps, crumbs, and bits of packaging are not strewn in the kitchen or auditorium. The library closes shortly after our event ends, so anything edible left on the floor or counters will attract vermin overnight. Night vermin are the worst!
* Please fold most of the tables and stack them under the coat rack â a few may remain where they were used â but **DO NOT FOLD THE CHAIRS**. Leave them out in any configuration that lets people walk around them easily. Many chairs are needed for programs the following day, so by folding them you only make more work for the organizers. On the other hand, more than a few tables left standing only impede the next dayâs activities.

SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: How AI Alters Thinking
**This talk has completely sold out in advance and no additional tickets will be sold at the door. A repeat of the talk at Penn Social in DC on Monday, May 18 still has tickets available.**
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **âHow AI Alters Thinking,â** on dealing with artificial intelligenceâs capacity to change and undermine our thought processes, with Eli Alshanetsky, assistant professor of philosophy at Temple University, principal investigator at its Cognitive Integrity Lab, and author of an upcoming book on AI and freedom of thought.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-how-ai-alters](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-how-ai-alters) .]
Doctors who give bad advice can be sued for malpractice. Teachers belong to a profession with set standards. When artificial intelligence guides you, however, that guidance comes with a disclaimer: Use at your own risk.
Every day millions of people take that risk, and usually AI seems genuinely helpful. But even if AI gives us good answers, might its use over time do bad things to how we think?
Explore the relationship between AI and our own minds with Eli Alshanetsky, whose Cognitive Integrity Lab studies how artificial intelligence changes how we think, learn, and build trust. Author of *Articulating a Thought* and the upcoming book F*reedom of Thought in the Age of AI*, heâs on the cutting edge of efforts to answer AI-related questions such as: How can we tell when work is truly our own? How can technology support rather than replace authorship and reflection? What does trust mean when AI mediates our relationships with others and with our own thoughts?
To set up his discussion of potential consequences of AI, heâll describe how social mediaâs impact on society serves as a preview.
Social media didnât just give people what they wanted to click on, it actually changed what they regarded as click-worthy. It broke attention spans and fueled radicalization across millions of very different people. It left us with people who doom-scroll for hours, who canât focus, who donât know what to trust anymore.
If youâd shown people this version of themselves ten years ago, would they have chosen it?
Artificial intelligence is making a similar deal with us, but the stakes are higher. It isnât chasing clicks. Itâs optimized for giving you the most satisfying response to whatever is on your mind right now.
The risk over time isnât just that youâll get lazy. More profoundly, even when you think hard, your sense of what counts as good thinkingâas well as what sounds like youâwill shift to match what AI has been feeding you.
Weâll consider what kind of person this produces and whether this is someone we want to be or want children to become. Professor Alshanetsky will lay out a practical framework, which he calls âthe interaction layer,â for using AI without letting it replace the thinking itâs supposed to support. Heâll also talk about what AI-related concerns should be the focus of parents and educators. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

0 to 1 with AI: Real Product Talks
**ProductTank NoVA is back!**
After a brief hiatus, we are relaunching the chapter with a format that cuts out the fluff and gets straight to the reality of building.
Every product feed is flooded with AI hype right now, but what does it actually look like on the ground? Instead of a polished keynote, we are hosting **0 to 1 with AI: Real Product Talks**âa "Show & Tell" featuring 3â4 lightning talks focused on the intersection of AI and product.
The framing for the talks is simple: *"Here is what I'm building, and here is what I'm stuck on."* We want to look at the messy, 0-to-1 reality of integrating AI into your workflows and products.
*(Want to share what you are working on? Reach out! The bar is low-pressure, just 10â12 minutes to talk about a real AI problem you are trying to solve.)*
**Agenda:**
* **5:30 PM - 6:00 PM:** Doors open, networking, & name tags
* **6:00 PM - 6:10 PM:** Welcome + Chapter Relaunch Intro
* **6:10 PM - 7:30 PM:** Lightning Talks (Three 12-min talks + 5 mins Q&A each, with a 5-min stretch break)
* **7:30 PM - 8:00 PM:** Open networking
* **8:00 PM:** Soft close
**Location & Logistics:** Herndon Fortnightly Library (Extended Hours Meeting Room) 768 Center St, Herndon, VA 20170
* **Parking:** We'll meet at the library, located just behind the Herndon Municipal Center. There is plenty of free public parking available around the municipal center.
* **Metro & Bus:** Take the Silver Line to Herndon Metro Station, then connect via Fairfax Connector Route 921 or 950 to Historic Downtown Herndon.

* **Driving (via VA-286/Fairfax Co Pkwy):** Take the Elden St West exit. Turn right onto Lynn St.
Looking forward to seeing everyone again and getting back to building!
