Energy is Life: A Rational Optimist’s Case for Human Progress
Energy is Life: A Rational Optimist’s Case for Human Progress
**What does energy really mean for ordinary lives - for safety, dignity, education, and opportunity?** Few of us stop to ask why it matters so profoundly. In this thought-provoking talk, award-winning science communicator Zion Lights reveals the human story behind one of the most misunderstood forces in our world. Drawing from her new book Energy is Life, she explores how access to energy has lifted billions from hardship, empowered communities, and opened the door to human flourishing. Blending personal insight with scientific clarity, Zion challenges assumptions, demystifies modern technologies, and offers a hopeful, humane vision of our shared future. She examines why our intuitions about risk often mislead us, how cognitive biases shape public debates, and what we can do to think more clearly in an age of misinformation. Sharing her own journey from anti-technology activism to evidence-based advocacy, Zion makes a grounded case that science, reason, and abundant clean energy are essential to human progress and human flourishing. **Zion Lights** …is an award-winning Science Communicator and environmental advocate who makes complex science clear and compelling. She explores energy, climate, and technology through the lens of human challenges, showing how curiosity and evidence can shape a better future. Her work combines technical clarity with a sense of wonder, helping people see the big questions and the choices that define our civilisation. Zion is the author of the forthcoming book Energy is Life, which shows how science, technology, and the choices we make today can transform our energy systems and bring power to those who need it most. **To see more of Zion’s work visit her [website](https://www.zionlights.co.uk/). AWS AI In Practice #4
AWS AI In Practice #4
Welcome to our April event. We're delighted to welcome [Alex Le Peltier](https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-le-peltier/), Chief Technology Officer, Signapse and [Daniel Jones](https://www.linkedin.com/in/danieljoneseb/), Head of Product, re:cinq. **Alex** answers - “what if AI could sign for the entire world - in real time?” From Heathrow flight announcements to Netflix live streams, find out how Signapse is making accessibility possible at scale on AWS. **Daniel** answers - “how do you turn 100 developers AI-native in just a few weeks?” Daniel reveals the psychology, strategy, and surprising human side behind one of the most ambitious agentic coding rollouts in enterprise tech. A big thank you to our sponsors [The Scale Factory](https://rebrand.ly/scalefactory) and [Cloudscaler](https://rebrand.ly/cloudscaler)! **Programme:** 18:00: Arrival, registration 18:15: Talks start 20:00: Networking with food and a drink provided by the generosity of our sponsors. **Talk 1:** ***Real-Time Sign Language in the Cloud: Building Accessibility Infrastructure on AWS with Alex Le Peltier*** Accessibility is too often an afterthought - bolted on at the end, limited by budget, or simply impossible without a human interpreter in the room. Signapse is changing that. In this talk, Alex Le Peltier, CTO of Signapse, will show how a proprietary GenAI model hosted entirely on AWS is delivering real-time AI sign language at mass-market scale - from live flight announcements at Heathrow to Netflix live streams. By combining AWS infrastructure with custom and public LLMs, Signapse has built a platform that fills the critical gap where interpreters can't be present, freeing up scarce interpreter resources for where they matter most. **Alex** is a serial startup-er and tech leader with over 13 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. He’s passionate about understanding what challenges are faced by the deaf community and building innovative solutions that make a difference in people's lives. **Talk 2:** ***Agentic Coding For 100 Developers with Daniel Jones.*** How has a $3b Stockholm SaaS company transitioned 100 developers to AI-native development over a few weeks? Daniel shares how he helped Odevo with exactly this, but the answer might be more than you expect - it involves just as much discovery and psychology as it does training. Learn about the social and business prerequisites for such a transformation, the syllabus that enables developers to use multi-agent workflows, and how 'one-and-done' training is insufficient for this type of behavioural change. **Daniel** is Head of Product at re:cinq, an AI-native transformation consultancy, and a CTO Craft 100 member. He founded cloud consultancy EngineerBetter, spent six years helping banks, government and defence organisations deliver software faster, then scaled and sold the business. Now he focuses on agentic coding, AI-native engineering, and software factories - with a practical, engineer-first perspective: fix your path to production before you let agents anywhere near it. **Do you have a story to share?** If you are interested in speaking at one of our events, please check out our [call for papers here](https://awsuguk.org/call-for-papers/). We are advocates for greater inclusion & diversity in UK Tech and are especially keen to receive talk submissions from people in underrepresented groups. INTRODUCTION TO FURNITURE MAKING
INTRODUCTION TO FURNITURE MAKING
**Full details and registration via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/introduction-to-furniture-making-8/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/introduction-to-furniture-making-8/) **⋆⋆⋆** Our Introduction to Furniture Making is a part-time workshop-based course spread over 38 weeks created to bring the beginner to a level of competence in furniture design, using hand tools and workshop machinery. It provides the development of classic, traditional architectural joinery skills and basic use of our woodwork machines. This special course is open to just five learners, to maximise the learner/tutor ratio. We supply all of the tools you will need – though we advise you to start building a lifelong collection of your own pieces as you go along. The Goodlife Centre has been teaching practical woodworking since the centre opened in 2010. We teach traditional skills using hand tools in the same manner that has been handed down for hundreds of years. In addition, this course benefits from our modern woodworking machines where learners will gain experience by using industry-standard wood processing methods. You will follow the design process through the use of rods, technical drawing and the use of hand and power tools. The subjects covered range from timber preparation to the completion of several projects within a specific size. (Purchase of hardwood not included) You will learn: * how to skilfully use hand tools and sharpening tools * high standard joinery skills, including cross halvings, dovetails, mortice and tenons, bridle, corner halvings * how to safely use industry-standard portable power tools including a router * how to set up and use woodworking machines (Band saw/Table saw/ planer thicknesser/ Crosscut saw/Mortiser in accord with the latest Health and Safety legislation * how to construct projects such as a basic frame, a pair of trestles, hardwood dovetail bookends, a decorated tray, and a hardwood cabinet of your own design. The course is paced to help you learn your natural speed of working. The initial part of the course cannot be rushed through. There is no easy path to becoming a good maker and taking the initial projects carefully will give you the underlying skills to clarify your thinking when it comes to later pieces. The set projects will take you through simple planing and jointing exercises to some basic machine skills. By making yourself a pair of sturdy trestles you will be inducted into the machining area so you can be trusted to use the equipment safely and independently. As you move from project to project you will gain more confidence and independence.

A Conversation on Grief : Belonging, Identity, and Loss After Religion
A Conversation on Grief : Belonging, Identity, and Loss After Religion
You are invited to this joint event of Association of Black Humanists and Unruly Beauty. **Overview** Can a life without traditional religious meaning still feel sacred or whole? Grief is often associated with the loss of a person, but many of us carry quieter, less recognised forms of grief. This workshop creates space to explore the grief that can arise after losing a community, a shared purpose, or a spiritual framework, especially in the aftermath of leaving a religious tradition or belief system. Together, we will gently examine what it means to grieve not only *what was*, but also *what was promised*: belonging, certainty, identity, and a sense of divine connection. Participants are invited to reflect on how loss of faith or religious community can affect meaning-making, relationships, and one’s inner life, often in ways that are invisible or misunderstood by others. You do not need to identify as spiritual or religious to attend. This space honours doubt, curiosity, longing, anger, relief, and hope, (without pushing answers or beliefs). This is not about fixing grief, it is about witnessing loss, honouring transition, and making room for new forms of connection, within yourself and with others. Whether you are newly navigating life after religion or years into rebuilding your sense of self, you are welcome here. All Unruly Beauty events are open to ALL BODIES and ALL IDENTITIES! We affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and are committed to cultivating a space that is inclusive, affirming, and psychologically safe for all. Please get your ticket at: [A Conversation on Grief : Belonging, Identity, and Loss After Religion Tickets, Sunday, Apr 19 from 2 pm to 6 pm | Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-conversation-on-grief-belonging-identity-and-loss-after-religion-tickets-1983653963403?aff=ebdsshsms&utm_share_source=listing_android&sg=41dc7852e3c2c15abff109e6d60c35ae41b4d315c9aaf13ae99fadc159dd4742c404b715e2e5b679ea51461ecf7d9b293310945233892b469142c37487084052265edc7df3f422ec4d0ab644db) **(If the cost of a ticket feels like an obstacle, please send us a message.
