CLH Talks: Should Humanists Eat Meat? — Dr Sapna Ramnani
CLH Talks: Should Humanists Eat Meat? — Dr Sapna Ramnani
**An ethical exploration of compassion, culture, and choice.** Humanism asks us to live ethically using reason, evidence, and compassion. But what happens when those values meet one of our most everyday habits: eating meat? In this talk, humanist speaker and journalist Dr. Sapna Ramnani invites us to step back from slogans, guilt, and culture-war arguments, and instead ask a deeper question: If humanism is about reducing suffering and increasing wellbeing, whose suffering counts, and how far does our moral circle extend? Drawing on philosophy, psychology, animal welfare evidence, and humanist ethics, this talk explores why the meat question provokes such strong emotions, how distance and habit shape our moral blind spots, and whether our ethical frameworks have kept pace with what we now know about animal sentience and industrial farming. This is not a talk about telling anyone what to eat. It is a reflective, humanist exploration of moral responsibility, compassion, and choice. **What we’ll explore:** * What humanism actually commits us to ethically * Why meat-eating sits at the crossroads of identity, culture, and morality * The role of “ethical” labels and animal welfare frameworks * Psychological distancing and why suffering is easy to ignore * Whether concepts like “farmed with care” withstand ethical scrutiny * Coherent humanist positions on meat: reduction, contextual eating, and abstention * The talk acknowledges real-world constraints, culture, health, access, economics, and rejects moral purity tests. Instead, it invites honest reflection, ethical curiosity, and compassion toward others and ourselves. **Who is this talk for?** Humanists interested in ethics, philosophy, and moral consistency Anyone curious about animal ethics without dogma or judgment People who enjoy thoughtful discussion and reflective talks There will be time for questions and discussion. You are not being asked to agree, only to think. **We kindly request a contribution of £5 for lecture events to help cover marketing and venue hire costs.** **Format for the evening:** * Arrive from 6.30pm for drinks at the charity wine bar * 7pm talk by Sapna * 7.45 comfort break and drinks from the bar * All profits go to Sapna’s charity choice — Brent and Harrow Remap * After the talk we invite you to join us at The Queens Head and Artichoke for friendly conversation and to continue the discussion. The pub is a short walk away, located at 30-32 Albany Street, NW1 4EA
FURNITURE RESTORATION – EVENINGS – BRING A PROJECT
FURNITURE RESTORATION – EVENINGS – BRING A PROJECT
**Bookable via our website:** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/furniture-restoration-evenings-bring-a-project-50/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/furniture-restoration-evenings-bring-a-project-50/) **⋆⋆⋆** A wonderful entry into the enchanting world of restoration. This is a project based course and we encourage learners to bring a small wood item to the first class. You can bring a 60s book-rack, a small occasional table, a simple chair or a shabby wood box. These objects can be wobbly, scratched or dented, and maybe a few bits missing- they can date from 19th to mid 20th century. Work on your own piece while learning the skills you need along the way. We will show you how to fix the wobbles and make joint repairs and how to repair lost or flaky veneers. You will also have an introduction to wood finishes from modern stains, varnishes and waxes to classic French polishing. This is a great way to get stuck into the practice of restoration. We will guide you through the process of assessing a potential project, learning about its construction and how to bring a sad relic back to shining glory. Please email [info@thegoodlifecentre.co.uk](mailto:info@thegoodlifecentre.co.uk) if you have a photo of a project you would like to discuss. Some materials will not be kept in stock. Approved projects can be stored at the centre. We cannot offer additional time to work on your project outside of workshop times.
BFI Flare LGBT+ Film Festival 18th-29th (hybrid online+cinema/talks)
BFI Flare LGBT+ Film Festival 18th-29th (hybrid online+cinema/talks)
BFI Flare is a yearly film festival showcasing the best new LGBT+ movies, shorts and documentaries. Full details of all showings and events are at their [website](https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/flare/Online/default.asp). This meetup event is for the festival **not a specific showing**! There are also a few panel discussions or talks, or Q&As with producers/directors or cast or others (sometimes alongside a showing). This placeholder event is here to announce it to the group and allow you to check out in time - many showings sell out a while in advance (especially the highlights and well-reviewed ones from other festivals). Most showings/events are ticketed and not free, but there are a few free ones and a few online. We've had one-off events in past years of this festival to watch something from it together and talk about it after. If you find ones that seem more interesting or relevant to the group, do please share them in comments below; am up for a similar watch-party of anything online if a few of us like the idea, e.g. using Discord. I'll also be looking for things to suggest from what others say/using the site, but don't rely on me to find the best ones in time! By the time the festival showings start many of the tickets will have gone. You'll see this event twice - once for the start day and once at the end date. The most bisexual representation comes from the piece "Lunar Sway" and then 2 short films; "The Fling in (When the Rainbow is Enuf)" and "Their Love Isn't Taught in Fragments of Us". There are other panels on adaptations too (see photos), and sometimes last minute tickets on the day(s) for some sold out screenings. There are [5 short films available to watch for free](https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/flare/Online/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=five-films-for-freedom-flare26) during the fest as well. Please don't spoil storyline details for others in comments here\, and surround any spoilers you write in the Discord with '\|\|' \(use the **#lets-watch** channel, or **#chat** to invite people generally for planning around something). Here's an invitation link for our Discord if you haven't joined yet: [https://discord.gg/RDFmb3YGAu](https://discord.gg/RDFmb3YGAu) ⚫ How watching Flare videos online works: Once you've bought a ticket (or for a free-but-limited-tickets short), you can start watching the show anytime through the festival. Once you have started it, you have a few hours to finish watching it (what they could arrange to keep copyright holders happy about piracy risk); check details when purchasing. ⚫ Accessibility: English language videos have all had closed caption subtitles in the past, including descriptions of non-dialogue audio, and audio descriptions. Screen Talks, pre-recorded introductions, Q&As and events have closed captions. Audio description is not available on Chromecasts (yet). Further details on their website: [https://www.bfi.org.uk/flare/accessibility](https://www.bfi.org.uk/flare/accessibility)

Cine: Se permuta (House of Swap) - Cuba
Cine: Se permuta (House of Swap) - Cuba
La película empieza a las 16.20 no hay publicidad ni trailers de otras películas antes. Después de la película nos tomaremos algo para compartir nuestras impresiones. Screened in partnership with [Screen Cuba](https://www.thegardencinema.co.uk/partner/screen-cuba/) Juan Carlos Tabío, Cuba, 1983, 103m. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with special guests from Cuba, distinguished cinema actors Mirtha Ibarra and Eslinda Núñez. This film heralded a new genre of sociocritical comedy in Cuba and was the debut feature of director Juan Carlos Tabio. It is full of Cubanisms – popular everyday problems, language and attitudes of that era and a range of characters from an idealist architect to an opportunistic bureaucrat. Gloria wants her adult daughter to find a husband she considers a “good match” and engineers a chain of house swaps to move to a “better neighbourhood” to make things go her way, but her daughter has different ideas and wants to love who she wants. It examines the desire to get ahead in a society that says everyone is equal but also celebrates the resourcefulness with which people solve their own problems.

Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM. It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!
