Bank Holiday trek – Golders Hill Park and Pergola, 3.5 miles
We will meet opposite Hampstead tube station, by the Clock Tower (pictured below).
* We will then make our way via Heath Street to see the Jack Straw's Castle. Not that Jack Straw -:), this site is named after the rebel leader Jack Straw, who led the Peasants' Revolt in 1381 and who is said to have taken refuge on the site until he was caught and executed. It is mentioned in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, where Professor Van Helsing and Doctor Jack Seward stop to dine, and also in Harold Pinter's play No Man's Land.
* We will then make our way to see the Golders Hill Park. It adjoins the West Heath part of Hampstead Heath. It is chiefly grassy parkland, but it also has a formal, beautifully tended, flower garden next to a duck pond with a small humpback bridge, a separate water garden, which leads onto a larger pond, and a small free zoo, recently renovated.
* We will then make our way to see the Pergola (pictured above). The Pergola is one of the hidden delights of Hampstead Heath, and is very popular for wedding pictures, as well as with film and photography students. The Hill Garden is a beautiful, landscaped garden which was the private garden of a now demolished manor house.
* We will carry on to see the Burgh House, which is run by a charitable trust formed by local residents. Burgh House is free to visit and art lovers can always come back to see the world's largest archive and collection of Helen Allingham's work.
This is where the walk ends. Optional drinks at the local pub after the walk. Hampstead station is 5mins away. For members who prefer the Overground – Hampstead Heath is 10 mins away.
What to bring:
Comfortable footwear
Water
Photo-taking gadgets and chargers
An umbrella just in case (it's London after all)
The walk is free for members who have subscribed for an annual membership. For other members the fee is £5 cash/card on arrival to contribute towards the organiser's Meetup fees and costs.
The annual pass option is £15 payable by cash/card on the day. This will provide access to at least 40 walks per year (members are welcome to bring a guest to each event).
All walks are free for the NHS staff (also welcome to bring a guest).
***'No Show' Policy:*** *If the member replied 'yes' but did not attend the event, did not update the RSVP and did not inform the organisers on 3 occasions – this triggers an automatic removal from the group. That's once for events with a waiting list.*

🥾 **Hike Description**
This is Outdooraholics’ most popular hike, a dramatic and exhilarating journey across the chalk cliffs of Sussex that we have been leading for over 12 years. The **Seven Sisters** are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs formed at the end of the last Ice Age by glacial meltwater. Erosion has since created an “eighth sister,” and today the cliffs stand as one of England’s most iconic landscapes.
We begin in the coastal town of **Seaford**, home to a Napoleonic-era **Martello Tower** built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air.
Our route follows the **South Downs Way**, passing through **Birling Gap** and past the striking **Belle Tout Lighthouse**, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from falling into the sea. The final highlight is **Beachy Head**, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below.
We finish in **Eastbourne**, statistically England’s sunniest town, where we celebrate our coastal adventure with refreshments in a local pub.

**Cliffs – danger**
There are sheer drops off the cliffs and some of these soft chalk cliffs are crumbling at the edges with chunks regularly falling and no fencing in place. Please keep at least 3 metres away from the edges. If you fall, or the ground at the edge of the cliff collapses it will almost certainly be fatal.

Bank holiday hike: Friston Forest, Cuckmere Haven & the most stunning sea views
Hey, Hey, Hey! It is bank holiday and what do we do on bank holidays? We join me on a fabulous trip. :)
This is one of the most fantastic coastal trips in the country and we are doing an easier version of it. There will be a few inclines but nothing like the nearby Seven sisters that you will see in the background so if you would like to enjoy walking in a living painting, join me for this trip.
We will start and finish in the seaside town of Seaford, walk these gorgeous woods of Friston alongside pretty cottages and flowery gardens before we head back to Seaford for a well deserved diner or a pint or to London if you do not wish to stay along for some more laughter.
And last but not least, the view of the Cuckmere river sneaking in the valley all the way to the sea is my favourite postcard view in the country, you could almost hear Vivaldi playing Spring in the background while unicorns and fauns are galloping in the fresh water. Really, do not miss it.
The hike is around 11 miles and medium, although there will be a couple of inclines.
A BIT OF HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY.
FRISTON FOREST:
Friston Forest is within the South Downs National Park between Lulington Heath National Nature Reserve and Seven Sisters Country Park. It is the largest area of recently established forest in South East England, it has extensive carpets of Bluebells in late April to mid-May and some of the most stunning autumnal colours at the fall.
CUCKMERE HAVEN:
It is an area of flood plains in Sussex, England where the river Cuckmeer meets the English Chanel between [Eastbourne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastbourne) and [Seaford](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaford,_East_Sussex). The river is an example of a meandering river
The beach was commonly used by smugglers in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. For example, in 1783 two gangs of smugglers (each numbering 200 or 300) overcame officers of the law by weight of numbers and carried away a large quantity of goods. It is one of the most visited beaches in the UK.

The Haven and the nearby cliffs offer some of the most stunning photographs you will ever take, the purple sea thrift flowers adding an impeccable touch to the white and red cliffs

***PLEASE NOTE:*** *Signup for our events must be made through the London Sailing Club website, and not via Meetup - [click here to register](https://www.londonsailing.club/Events/Calendar/View?id=202). If you are not already a member of the club you will need to become a full or social member which you can do [by clicking here](https://www.londonsailing.club/Registration/Register?isSlotReAssignment=False).*
**London Sailing Club Taster Day - Easter Bank Holiday Monday**
Have you been along to one of our socials and heard about our sailing trips, or seen club trips advertised on Meetup or our club's website, but you're not quite sure whether it's for you? Here is your chance to try out sailing with the club without committing to a multi-day trip. We're sure you're going to love it out on the water with us, and will want to come out with us again! Easter Eggs will also be involved, if you need any more persuasion!
For insurance reasons all participants in club trips must be adults and full members of the club (annual membership fee is £24). We're confident you will have a great time and will want to come and sail with us again, but we're happy to refund your membership fee if, after your taster day, you decide membership is not for you.
Membership benefits include the ability to join sailing trips in the UK, the Mediterranean and other European destinations, sailing skills weekends, lots of varied social events, free online Theory classes, access to our "Take The Helm" coaching programme to help you develop practical skippering experience after obtaining Day Skipper, special discounts on occasional RYA training from accredited schools, and up to 15% discount on bareboat chartering with partner companies.
*Taster Day Plan*
We will meet at Port Hamble Marina at 9am for introductions and a safety briefing aboard the yacht. Parking is available at the marina. We'll aim to set off before 10am to make the most of a day sailing on the Solent. Depending on the weather and the wind we might drop anchor for lunch, after which we'll make our way back to Port Hamble Marina and be off the boats around 4.00pm. Participants are welcome to stay on for drinks in the marina bar.
If getting to Port Hamble by 9am is likely to be difficult, you are welcome to stay on the yacht the night before for an additional £20. Accommodation is in shared double cabins, though if fewer than 3 people request this option you may well have your own cabin.
First time sailors may wish to [take a look at our list of FAQs](https://www.londonsailing.club/Cms/Spaces/DEFAULT/FAQs+for+firsttime+sailors) and we also have a [recommended kit list](https://www.londonsailing.club/Cms/Spaces/DEFAULT/Recommended+kit+lists+for+sailing+trips).
*Yachts*
We have chartered a number of 37ft yachts and will sail with a maximum of six on each. We want everyone to have enough space and a proper chance to be involved in the sailing. If you’re new to yachting, you’ll be pleased to know the boats have heating, hot/cold running water, a bathroom, a kitchen with a fridge, and more than enough electricity to charge your phone!
*Skippers & First Mates*
The crew will be led by one of LSC's fantastic and experienced skippers and depending on the level of experience on board we may also have a First Mate from the club's Take The Helm programme.
*Kit*
No special or expensive sailing kit required! Just bring practical footwear and clothing to suit the weather forecast. Lifejackets are provided. Foul weather gear can be hired locally if needed. Don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen and a change of clothes if the forecast suggests it!
If you are staying on the boat you should bring a sleeping bag and pillow as no bedding is provided. The marina has shoreside showers and toilets, so you are not restricted to using the more limited facilities on board the boat.
*Cost*
This is a non-commercial trip run on a shared-cost basis. The cost is £85 per person (not including the annual membership fee for which you pay separately), which covers the yacht charter, fuel, marina fees, lunch, snacks, and soft drinks on board during the taster day, as well as a £5 contribution to the club's Muck Up Fund which allows us to help skippers on club trips manage the risk of accidental damage caused by trip participants. It doesn’t cover getting yourself to/from the trip or any meals or drinks on shore. We ask for the full amount up front to secure your place. Accommodation on board the night before is available separately at an additional £20.
Note that, because this trip is being advertised via the London Sailing Club’s platforms, any participant who is not already a full member of the Club (which costs £24 per year) will need to join prior to the start of the trip. We're sure you're going to love sailing with us and will want to come along on more trips, but if you decide that you don't want to sail with us after your taster day we will refund your membership fee.
London Sailing Club Terms and Conditions apply.

**Dear friends,**
If you have plans to travel somewhere in the world, and you are looking for a travel mate/roommate, you can post it here to let others know, and maybe you can arrange to travel together.
It would probably be a good idea to meet up before deciding to travel together but at least this will give you a chance to find a like-minded travel mate.
**How to Choose the Right Travel-mate**
1. Have some common interests.
2. Avoid people who tend to extremes.
3. Agree on expenditures before you leave.
4. Make sure your personalities
5. Friends aren’t always good travel companions
6. Don’t go backpacking with a luxury-seeker
7. Make sure you’re able to communicate
8. Agree on a similar budget
9. Avoid picky, crazy and whiny individuals
10. Test each other on a short trip
11. You don’t have to be like a couple of inseparable lovebirds

* If you do not have a game setup, you can arrive at any time. If you do have a game to set up we recommend getting there earlier.
* It is a relaxed atmosphere, where we generally prioritize company over fierce competition.
* Please bring along any games you think we might enjoy, or you can play from the games that others bring.
* We split into a few groups based on people's game preferences and numbers, and usually have plenty of time to try a few games over the course of the evening.
* The event hosts are regular attendees but might not make it to every event - if you can't spot us, then just approach the folks sitting at tables surrounded by board games (usually on left as you come in the door). We're a friendly bunch and will be more than happy to welcome you.
(Please update your RSVP if it turns out you'll be unable to attend, to free up your space for others who may otherwise miss out!)
Spring social drinks for new and existing members
Join us for a relaxed social evening for our hiking community! Whether you’ve joined us on past walks, or are simply curious about coming along, this is a great chance to meet fellow hikers and group leaders in a friendly setting.
Catch up with people you’ve shared the trail with, swap stories and welcome new faces who are thinking about joining future hikes.
We’ve reserved a private area upstairs in a welcoming pub, just a short walk from Waterloo Station. Food and drinks will be available, with a special discount on food for our group, so come along, unwind and enjoy a sociable evening with like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.

Hike Blacklick Woods and The Canopy. Optional lunch after.
Over time I'm hoping to organize a hike to all the Franklin County Metro Parks. This is the first one so if you're interested jump in!
We'll start with the Canopy Walk, a cool feature of this park. Climb 100 stairs to the top - or take the elevator if stairs aren't your thing. At the top there are a bunch of things to play on - a rope bridge, a fireman pole that we can slide down - and more! About fifteen minutes there and we'll head to the natural trail, Buttonbush, Maple and Beech Trail for 2.2 miles then do a 1.7 mile loop on the paved Greenway Trail. We'll be passing our cars as we transition if you only want to do the first loop, or the second loop. Pace of around 3.5 mph but no one left behind.
If there is an interest we can grab lunch nearby afterward.
