Deep Conversations at Bethesda Library -- Is the Universe sending you messages?
Deep Conversations at Bethesda Library -- Is the Universe sending you messages?
**Jan 12:** Do you feel the Universe is sending you messages? How do you know? If so, what are they? If not, where does advice or wisdom come from? **Quote:** "The entire universe is your Guru. You learn from everything, if you are alert and intelligent. Were your mind clear and your heart clean, you would learn from every passer-by." - *Nisargadatta Maharaj, from the book "[I Am That](https://www.reddit.com/r/Meditation/comments/g3x8y/i_am_that_nisargadatta_maharaj_free_pdf_of_book/)"* \-\-\-\-\-\- ***“I am struck with how rare it is to find a few good friends on the path. It is easy to find people who simply want to sit and be entertained by teachers, or who want to sit and entertain by playing the role of teacher. In other words, the quest for affirmation often outweighs the quest for truth.*** ***Yet you may have one or two good friends, and definitely have one or two waiting to be discovered. Find them; be thankful.”*** ***— Shawn Nevins*** 'What will make me happy in life?' ... 'Am I my thoughts?' ... 'What is Enlightenment?' ... We meet every week to ask questions like these in the pursuit of Self-Knowledge and Truth. We are interested in topics like: Zen, stoicism, spirituality, psychology, mindfulness, Nisargadatta, non-violent communication, Socrates, existential philosophy, Alan Watts, taoism, Eckhart Tolle, meditation, Ramana Maharshi, etc. But we are not affiliated with any dogma, philosophy, or religion. Our goal each meeting is to serve as mirrors for one another using question-based inquiry in a safe environment. In a session, every participant takes turns discussing the week's question or topic, and the group asks reflective questions without any agenda besides trying to understand the person's beliefs. A few other guiding principles of our group: * No one is obligated to share * Be honest with yourself and others * Do not try to convince others to believe or think as you do * Keep the focus on the person being questioned We meet at the [Bethesda Library](https://maps.app.goo.gl/GWMozF8zpY1m1PY26) every Monday. The library is a 5 minute walk from the Bethesda Metro on the Red Line, approx 25 minute Metro ride from Metro Center and Gallery Place stations. The library has a a parking lot with metered parking for $1/hour. \*\*\* WE WILL BE IN MEETING ROOM 3 UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED ----- THE MEETING ROOM IS IN THE BACK OF THE LIBRARY \*\*\* Please contact us with any questions!

SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Queer Country
SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Queer Country
**This talk has completely sold out in advance and no door tickets will be available.** [Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Queer Country,”** on the long, often-hidden presence of LGBTQ+ performers in country music, with Tanya Olson, lecturer in English and scholar of gender and sexuality studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-queer-country ](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-queer-country) .] Although country music is often thought of as conservative, rural, and straight, queer artists have always been part of its story. Learn about the important role that queer artists, their ideas, and their experiences have played in country music with Tanya Olson, a cultural critic whose recent work explores the intersection of country music, identity, and tradition. She’ll talk about queer artists across generations, describing how they are hidden and what it means to stand in the circle of tradition without being seen. She’ll explore how queerness shows up in the songs, stories, and sounds of country music even when it isn’t named, and also what’s at stake when those threads are left out of the history we tell. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of country music’s past, as well as a sharper eye for who’s been missing from the picture all along. You’ll gain an appreciation for why inclusion in country radio and the Grand Ole Opry matters, as well as an understanding of how a queer presence might strengthen, rather than threaten, country music's legacy. Olson’s latest book of poetry, *Born Backwards*, builds on the language and imagery of country music to ask who gets remembered and why. Learning from her will make for a memorable evening. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) Beat the New Year's Blues at Cleveland Park Library
Beat the New Year's Blues at Cleveland Park Library
Hello! Happy New Year! Chase away the winter blahs and beat the New Year's blues with the company of your fellow autists at Cleveland Park Library! Located at 3310 Connecticut Ave. NW in Washington, DC, this library is in a safe and thriving neighborhood just two blocks from the Cleveland Park Metro on the Red Line. Bringing games is optional. We'll be meeting in the large second-floor conference room. HOUSEKEEPING RULES Per library policy, eating is prohibited, but covered drinks are permitted. Per fire code, only 20 RSVPs are allowed. If the list gets to 20, additional RSVPs will move to the waitlist. Please do not take pictures of people without permission. Due to space and liability concerns, people under 18 are not permitted. AFTER MEETUP On the waitlist? Don't worry! You are welcome to join us at Fat Pete's afterwards. It is located at 3407 Connecticut Ave. NW, just across the street and a block over from the library. The owner has made an arrangement where I call him and let him know we're coming over. He then tells me if the place is quiet or noisy. This way, sensory sensitivities are met. The place also has a wide variety of extremely good food and is handicapped-accessible. HEALTH AND SAFETY Since this is the middle of winter, I will keep an eye on the weather. If there are ice/sleet/snow accumulation/winter mix, I am cancelling the event. I am also testing for COVID the morning of the event. Yes, it's still here. If I am well and test negative, I'll be there. If I am sick and/or test positive, I'm staying home. I'm sharing the results in either case. HOW TO GET THERE DC is notoriously hard to drive in. Parking is even worse - almost impossible to find and way too expensive. Taking the Metro or a rideshare is much easier. Cleveland Park Library is located at 3310 Connecticut Ave. NW two blocks away from Cleveland Park Metro on the Red Line. Once you enter the library, go to the second floor. Then go through the glass double doors to the adult books section. We're meeting in the large conference room next to the balcony. If you have trouble finding us, please call or text me at 202-802-3238. See you soon, Jenny
French Conversation on Capitol Hill
French Conversation on Capitol Hill
Good day, tout le monde! Please join us Friday evening, after work (or school or play) at about 5:30 at Tunnicliff's Tavern. The restaurant is at 222 7th Street, S.E., Washington, D.C. If the weather is nice, we will sit outside, and spend some time talking, drinking and eating. If we're not outside, come find us inside! We'll be in the back, so please walk past the bar and you'll find us there. We'll be the fun (and possibly somewhat loud) group of folks enjoying each other's company! NOTE: This is for Intermediate or Advanced speakers. We are a group of very nice folks who love speaking French. And remember, we won't judge you or your French, so please come and stop by, even if just for a bit. It's a great way to kick off your weekend!

ASL Sunday Silent Social at Fairfax's Wegmans
ASL Sunday Silent Social at Fairfax's Wegmans
Whether you're Deaf, HoH, an interpreter, an ASL student, or just want to learn or practice American Sign Language (ASL), we welcome all levels of signers to come join us for an evening of ASL socializing and practice. This event occurs on the first and third Sundays of every month, in the heart of Fairfax County at the Fairfax Wegman's (corner of Route 29 and Monument Drive). We can be found on the upper level, typically near the stairs. We generally start around 7 pm. ASL beginners are welcome, but you should know the ASL alphabet and some basic signs - this is not an ASL class, but the more experienced signers are generally happy to help beginners learn and improve. There is no better way to develop your signing skills than by joining the conversation with other signers. There is a place for everyone to join, learn and practice. Regardless, we are always welcoming so don’t be discouraged to attend; this is very informal and new folks are always welcome. Note, some attendees arrive early and grab some of Wegman’s food for dinner, so you can combine a shopping trip with the ASL practice.
