❄️🌲 Winter Walk at the Brick Works 🌲❄️
❄️🌲 **Winter Walk at the Brick Works** 🌲❄️
**Fresh air, good company, and a perfect excuse to get out of the house!**
Winter doesn’t mean staying indoors — it means layering up, grabbing a warm drink, and heading out for one of Toronto’s most beautiful seasonal walks. Join us for a winter adventure to the Evergreen Brick Works, where nature, history, and community come together. ✨
We’ll start with a scenic walk from **St. Clair Subway Station** down through the ravine to the Brick Works — a peaceful, snow-dusted escape that feels a world away from the city, even though we’re right in it. ❄️🌿
Once we arrive, you’ll have time to enjoy the **Brick Works Market** — grab something warm to eat, browse fresh produce, or treat yourself to a little local shopping. Afterward, we’ll find a cozy spot to sit, chat, eat lunch, and actually get to know each other. ☕🥪🤍
Then we’ll walk back together toward St. Clair — but if you’re feeling tired, cold, or just ready to head home, **buses are available** from the Brick Works to connect you to nearby subway stations. Easy and flexible!

### 🌲 More About the Brick Works 🌲
Toronto has some incredible hidden hiking trails, and this one is truly special. From **1889 to the 1980s**, the Don Valley Brick Works was one of Canada’s most important brickyards. In the 1990s, the City of Toronto and the TRCA raised nearly **$6 million** to restore the site, transforming it into a stunning park and natural space that opened in 1996.
Today, it’s an awe-inspiring urban oasis — especially in winter. Snow-covered paths, quiet ravines, wildlife sightings, and historic industrial ruins create a magical atmosphere you never quite know what you’ll encounter. ❄️🦊🌲
***
🚶♂️ **Can I Leave Early?**
Absolutely — leave anytime you like. The full experience takes about **3 hours**, including a relaxed break at the Brick Works.
***
💛 **REMEMBER:**
You can just show up — or decide on the day if you’re not 100% sure.
⚠️ **NOTE:**
Sometimes things happen and plans may change — please keep an eye out for updates.

It takes walkers through the system and points out the crucial connectors and branches within the system to effortlessly guide the lost through the maze. You might even enjoy getting lost in the underground, lost but not forgotten.

Contra dance Jan 24 (First Unitarian Universalist Church) note new time!
# **Band: The Pegheads; Caller: Liz Burkhart**
Beginner lesson at 1:30, regular dancing begins at 2:00 pm
NOTE THAT WE ARE TEMPORARILY DANCING IN THE AFTERNOON INSTEAD OF EVENING. Dance with us in the afternoon then you can still go out in the evening!
**Sponsor: All Soles Contra and Square Dancing, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd., Columbus OH 43214**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 1:30 - 2:00, followed by dancing 2:00 - 430. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.
Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot.
Please bring your own refillable water bottle.

Wine Tasting - Newcomers Night
This is "***New Members Night***." If you are one of the many folks on the fence about coming to your first wine tasting with the *Hilliard Wine Club*, this is the night to come. There will be many other new people, so you won't be alone. And the regulars will be there to help make you feel welcome. We're a relaxed and warm group. We hope to see you.
**SIDE NOTE:** New members are welcome to ALL our Friday night wine tastings, but this night is a special overture to those who don't want to feel that they are the only new person in the room. Don't worry. You won't be. And don't hesitate to RSVP to other events.
**OLD MEMBERS NOTE**: Hey Old Members! You're not excluded from this event. We expect to see you there to help make the new members feel welcome.
**Sample 4 different wines** this Friday for $15 (*Cash or Venmo only please*). Glasses are provided. Bring a snack to share. Bring a bottle to share if you care to. See all the details below for the Hilliard Wine Club Wine Tasting. In Person. In Real Life. Actual Wine from glass bottles with corks and everything.
**Wine**: Tastings will be $15 for four samples as always. And you are welcome to bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share with others. Participation in the wine tastings is optional. But since you’re going, I will buy enough wine to cover you. If you bring your own wine and do not participate in the tasting you will only pay $10 to cover the door charge.
**Parking**: There are several public parking lots near the Alive614 hall. Please be careful to NOT park in private parking lots. They do tow. Check Google maps to scope out your space. Anyone who is early could easily find a parking space on the street nearby.
**Glasses**: …will be provided. Please note that after the wine tasting, the glasses need to be returned to the boxes at the service table. Please be gentle, our glasses are fragile. Uh, they are made of glass!
**Food**: You are welcome to bring a snack to share. It is not required. Most people do though. If no one brings anything, there will be nothing.
**Code of Conduct**: Though mostly understood, it’s still worth mentioning. We don’t have rules per se, but we highly discourage the following topics of discussion because they are likely to incite anti-social responses - Sex, Politics, Religion. Please don’t mistake this as an attempt to limit your free speech rights but rather a guide to a place and time for appropriate discussions.
**Extra Wine**: After everyone has had their samples, we remove the pouring spouts and any remaining wine is poured freely to whomever wants it. I hate having leftover wine.
**Queen of Hearts**: The Queen of Hearts raffle is a fundraiser for the club and a Barnum and Bailey type extravaganza - minus the dancing ponies, clowns, and actual circus. Bring your ***cash*** as the Queen does not accept American Express or other plastic.
**After the lights go out**: After the last sip of wine, when we clean up and turn the lights out, if you still haven’t had enough of us, it is typical for a group to get together and go to a local eatery for food and/or drinks or coffee.
Again, We look forward to meeting new members and reuniting with old friends.
Sincerely, ***Paul Uttermohlen***,
**Red 1 Realty**
*Your Hilliard Wine Club Host*
Drunken Philosophy: Is Life a Dream? Is Life a Simulation?
Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club.
Optional topic for this meet up: Is life a dream? Is life a simulation?
Dreams feel real while they last. Could life work the same way? How do we know we’re awake, and what follows if we can’t be sure?
Let’s kick that around over a around of drinks:
• What makes something feel real: continuity, shared evidence, or meaning?
• How do we know we're not in a simulation?
• How would you tell you’re awake (reality checks, memory, other people)?
• If life is dreamlike, what becomes of free will and responsibility?
• Is identity a story we keep telling—who’s the narrator?
• Are we author, actor, or audience in our dreams and how would you tell?
• Does art/film reveal reality or replace it?
No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if it’s fun.
Saturday Mornings @ East Market
Let's grab some coffee/food and share a morning chat! The East Market has an ample parking lot and outdoor and indoor seating.
Grab a cup of coffee from Winston's Coffee & Waffles or on your way to East Market and meet us on the second floor - table behind or east of the elevator. If the weather cooperates we will be meeting in the patio.
Per what this group is about: "Everyone is welcome! International transplants to Columbus who want to improve language skills, Columbus residents who want to discuss international travel and culture, and anyone who enjoys getting together for good conversations."
