Revealed: Why the great fire of London 1666 nearly did not happen
Join my group direct from here: https://www.meetup.com/ian-s-history-walks/?eventOrigin=your_groups
This event is for all those who missed the walk in November.
Find out about the main characters in this story. Why it should not have happened.
I will tell you about the devastation in the city and see the rebuilding of many of the churches and visit some of them. We will walk along the direction of the fire to reveal its many interesting stories and human tragedies.
I am a qualified tour guide.
The walk will last 2 hours with opportunities to use toilets.
The tour fee is £10. Cash or card
**Please be early as we like to set off on time and can only wait 10 minutes. Don’t forget to cancel via the “Edit RSVP” button if you can’t make a walk. Your consideration is much appreciated.**
**The walk goes ahead in the event of rain.**
Decentralised technology in a left libertarian society
Where are we now?
Contemporary capitalism with its most extreme expression sometimes defined as "techno-feudalism" sees a concentration of power within massive digital platforms, resulting in extreme inequity and the erosion of democracy.
What can we do about it?
To counteract this extreme centralisation of wealth and power “Techno-Collectivism” is a governance model which integrates libertarian socialist principles with modern technology to manage digital infrastructure. It aims to counteract the systemic failures of neoliberal capitalism while avoiding the authoritarian pitfalls associated with historical socialist regimes. See article…
[Link](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/395850712_Techno-Collectivism_Scaling_Libertarian_Socialist_Governance_of_Digital_Infrastructure)
Historical and Political Context…
This article clarifies the distinctions between socialism, capitalism, and libertarianism, noting how "libertarianism" has been ideologically captured by right-wing market interests. It advocates returning to the original egalitarian, anti-capitalist, and anti-authoritarian roots of libertarian socialism.
The framework is built upon three ethical principles: needs-based distributive justice, which prioritizes human care over profit; communal ownership, which grants control to those who use the resources; and citizen control, which ensures genuine and meaningful participation.
How?
Technological Implementation Tools To scale up these principles, open-source AI could be used for transparent resource planning as well as decentralized ownership and decision-making, decentralized social media platforms to facilitate federated, autonomous communities.
Universities as Experimental Testbeds The authors propose universities as the ideal environments to pilot these sociotechnical experiments. By utilizing their existing intellectual capital and relative autonomy, academic institutions can lead the shift toward post-capitalist, anti-authoritarian governance models.

Philosophy in the Park 138 (outside St Giles Cripplegate)
Philosophy in the Park is a philosophical discussion group. Open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary.
We will meet outside St Giles Cripplegate.
Here's how it works:
* At the start of each hour vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like. The questions with the most votes are the questions we discuss.
* We then break up into groups and each group does a different question. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and up end talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer you're welcome to sit back and enjoy the conversation.
After an hour we all come back together, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So in 3 hours we go around 3 times.
The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something?
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Keep it Philosophical
(No Science, no History, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc).
2. Think for Yourself
(No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read).
3. Tangents are Cool
(Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question).
4. Keep it Succinct
(Like this).
5. Be Excellent to Each Other
(But of course).
Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas.
To terms of the right attitude: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding.
No homework or prior knowledge or reading is necessary - simply come and enjoy the discussions.
After the event finishes we have an area reserved in The Shakespeare pub which is just around the corner from the Barbican. You are very welcome to join us if you'd like.
If you would like to submit a question please join the Whatsapp group. Question submissions take place on the Thursday before the meeting.
We hope to see you there.
Nice one.

Y is for You Are Here @ Southbank Centre LATE
**Join us at *'You Are Here' at the Southbank Centre*,** **an epic, one-off, pop-culture spectacular that invites you on an electrifying journey through 75 years of British music, dance, theatre, fashion and film.**
Follow the performance as it unfolds around you in an on-the-move theatrical journey where every corner holds a new story.
This is a freewheeling journey of discovery that traces through-lines across decades, remixing and reimagining some of the most vivid and influential youth and social movements that have driven culture forward since 1951.
Rebellion meets euphoria as a cast of hundreds take you on a trip through punk, grime, northern soul, acid house, dancehall and disco – from the swaying of a tea dance to the beating heart of a superclub. Astonishing performers bring the energy of resistance, freedom and creation to every moment.
Marking the centrepiece of the Southbank Centre’s 75th anniversary celebrations, *You Are Here* is an exhilarating, full-throated celebration of cultural life that asks where we’ve been, where we’re at and how we’ll choose to shape where we want to go next.

'The Coming of Age' exhibition @ the Wellcome Collection!
Come along on Sunday 3rd May for a visit to the Wellcome Collection to see a new exhibition on 'the Coming of Age'.
**About the exhibition**
‘The Coming of Age’ exhibition explores experiences and perceptions of ageing, from adolescence to later life, and asks how societies can adapt for us all to age better.
Across the globe, people are living longer. One in ten children in the UK are expected to live beyond the age of 100. But who gets to live longer and ‘age well’? This exhibition explores how experiences of age are shaped by our environment, culture and society.
The exhibition features more than 120 artworks and objects, from historical artefacts to works by contemporary artists.
It brings together different perspectives from art, science and popular culture, challenging assumptions about life stages and asks what greater longevity means for all of us.
**Cost**
Entry is free! The visit is self-guiding.

Sunday at Highbanks Metro Park
We will meet next to the restrooms at the [Big Meadows Picnic Area](https://www.metroparks.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/HBK_Web_1980.png). They're all the way at the back of the park, and they can be found at coordinates [40°09'06.6"N 83°02'30.2"W](https://www.google.com/maps/place/40%C2%B009'06.6%22N+83%C2%B002'30.2%22W/@40.151828,-83.0423587,214m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m10!1m5!3m4!2zNDDCsDA5JzA4LjAiTiA4M8KwMDEnNDUuMSJX!8m2!3d40.1522222!4d-83.0291944!3m3!8m2!3d40.151827!4d-83.041715?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTIwNC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) (near the playground and the zip line).
We'll hike about 5 miles at [Highbanks Metro Park](https://www.metroparks.net/parks-and-trails/highbanks/) on the Dripping Rock and Overlook Trails. Afterward, we'll head over to [Olentangy River Brewing](https://www.olentangybrew.com/) for drinks, coffee, or food (their Sunday [food truck](https://www.olentangybrew.com/eventsandfood) is Venezuelan and always gets good reviews).
The actual address of the brewery is [303 Green Meadows Dr S, 43035](https://www.google.com/maps/place/303+Green+Meadows+Dr+S,+Lewis+Center,+OH+43035/@40.1551938,-83.0144045,17.25z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x8838f395cef06c97:0xe407de61b3e30069!8m2!3d40.1551765!4d-83.0124352!16s%2Fg%2F11c26jc7j9?entry=ttu). If you can't make the hike, we should be there by noon.
**How to find our starting point in Big Meadows:**
If you are new to Highbanks, the Big Meadows picnic area is 1.5 miles into the park just after you turn into the park off of U.S. Route 23. That is, after you enter the park, drive a mile and a half into the park. You will come to a crosswalk with a yield sign in the middle of it (this is not to be confused with the first such crosswalk you come to just in front of the Nature Center, which you arrive at maybe a quarter of a mile into the park).
Just after this second crosswalk, make a left. Then make another almost immediate left into the parking lot on your left. There you will see the jungle gym and the kiddie zip line to your left. I will be just in front of the restrooms just a bit further down from the jungle gym and picnic shelter; the restroom building will also be on your left.
