What we’re about

Welcome to the Free Cities meetup: an event for people with an interest in exploring alternative ways society can be governed.

Our events focus on the opportunities for governance that arise when power is transferred from large centralized states to smaller, autonomous places called Free Cities.

Free Cities are self-governing territories that prioritize upholding individual rights and freedoms. Within Free Cities, an operating company is responsible for protecting life, liberty, and property, providing basic infrastructure, and mediating disputes between citizens. However, other services normally associated with the modern state are provided by the private sector and voluntary arrangements. Within Free Cities, a “Citizen Contract” places both citizens and operators on an equal legal footing, ensuring that the rights of all are protected. There are currently around 15 aspiring Free Cities being built today, including examples such as Próspera and Ciudad Morazán in Honduras, Small Farm Cities in Malawi, and Liberstad in Norway. Our meetups feature a talk by a guest speaker, followed by a Q&A session and an opportunity to engage in discussions with organizers and other attendees over a drink. Our flagship Free Cities meetup takes place in London, but we also host meetups in other locations across the globe.
