#29 AI Series: King's College London - D. Watson
#29 AI Series: King's College London - D. Watson
We are excited to feature **David Watson**, who is currently a Lecturer at **King's College London** and will discuss **"Can Humans Flourish in the Age of AI? The Inverse Alignment Problem: AI and Moral Dilemmas**", lasting approximately 45 minutes. After the talk, seize the opportunity to connect with fellow AI enthusiasts to share ideas and questions while enjoying free drinks and pizza. **Door close by 7.15pm, so please come early! Also, "attend"ing (RSVP) here on Meetup is strictly necessary to be guaranteed entry.** Please note that Meetup has recently been quite keen on promoting its Plus program. However, you are not obligated to purchase it, as both our events and the platform remain free. **Who is this event for?** This event is open to everyone interested in state-of-the-art AI research. We especially design it for students, PhD candidates, academic researchers, and industry professionals with a research focus in machine learning. **Abstract**: The "alignment problem" in AI ethics refers to the challenge of instilling human values into automated systems. This is difficult for many reasons, not least because humans themselves are poorly aligned—our behavior as individuals and societies routinely deviates from our stated values. I propose a different challenge, which I argue is simpler to solve and more immediately beneficial. "Inverse alignment" is the task of using AI to help us live up to our own values. I examine two questions: Could AI help us become better individuals? Could AI help us build more just societies? Focusing on weakness of will and coordination failures, I explore whether and how AI might address these pervasive moral dilemmas. I argue that the primary obstacles are not technological but rather individual and structural vices that drive poor decision-making. While AI-enabled interventions could potentially help under the right conditions, there are real risks associated with overreliance on inverse alignment strategies. Any serious AI ethics discourse must nevertheless grapple with this possibility, given its profound implications for human flourishing. **Bio**: [David](https://dswatson.github.io/) is a Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence at King’s College London, where his research spans machine learning, philosophy of science, and computational biology. He received his DPhil from the University of Oxford, focusing on algorithmic fairness and explainability, and was previously a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Statistical Science at University College London, working on causal discovery and inference. He also serves as an Associate Editor at *Minds & Machines* and contributes as a Data Scientist at Queen Mary University’s Centre for Translational Bioinformatics. We are [BLISS](https://bliss.berlin/) e.V., the **AI** **organization** in Berlin that **connects like-minded individuals** who share great interest and passion for the field of machine learning. This winter 2025/26, we will, again, host an exciting speaker series on site in Berlin, featuring excellent researchers from Tübingen AI Center, DeepMind, Microsoft, King's College London, cohere, and ETH Zürich. Offener Deutschunterricht - Text & Konversation - Niveau B2+ (Fortgeschritten)
Offener Deutschunterricht - Text & Konversation - Niveau B2+ (Fortgeschritten)
Wolf Huddle – monthly circle (live)
Wolf Huddle – monthly circle (live)
**A down-to-earth men's circle** **for self-care, connection and resilience this Winter** When nights are long and the sun is scarce, Berlin can feel cold and lonely. *Wolf Huddle* offers a way to balance that out. Each month men gather to practice self-care in supportive community. Through guided group and individual activities, we explore mental wellbeing, nervous-system regulation, and simple strategies to bring calm and connection into the darker months — tactics to keep the oxytocin batteries charged. **What we’ll do** Each session blends conversation, reflection, movement, learning, and optional platonic touch. You’ll be invited to name your own needs, set your own boundaries, support others, and join exercises shaped by the group: From handshakes and supportive contact — perhaps gentle massage or other ways you’d like to be nurtured physically — to breathwork, self-regulation exercises, journalling, storytelling, or guided visualisations. **What it's for** Wolf Huddle is a chance to explore trust and fraternal bonds, the warmth and strength of relaxed company. We huddle not like a sports team, but in mutual respect and support for our differences. Along the way you may learn to feel at ease saying 'no', release loneliness or shame, or make room for clarity, care, and joy. **What it’s not** Not a cuddle event or casual hangout. It’s a professionally facilitated, trauma-sensitive space where your boundaries are welcome and your sovereignty is central. **Reserve your spot** via [bank transfer](https://zigmal.org/wolf-huddle/), adding *Wolf Huddle + your first name*, and a *contact method* Contribution for BMG members: **35 €** standard **25 €** low income\* If you decide to show up spontaneously on the evening, you're welcome to bring cash - but it is helpful for us for our facilitation planning to know you'll be coming in advance. ֎ Bring a notebook, pen, and comfortable clothing ֎ The space is shoe-free, so warm socks are welcome. ֎ Cancel up to 24 h ahead for a full refund. *\*Some men have asked what counts as 'low income': You're not expected to provide any kind of proof of being on a low income - it's entirely up to you... if €35 feels like too high a hurdle for you at the moment, then feel free to use the lower option.* **About the facilitators** **Hans** here from the Berlin Men’s Group. I'm a certified systemic trauma counsellor and touch trainer with twelve years of specialising in men's issues. I enjoy bringing depth, creativity and humour to my work. **Karl-Henrik** from **[The Unity Brothers](https://t.me/+-QfXUDZI1I4zNWY6)**' will join as co-facilitator— he's a Jivamukti Yoga teacher, consent facilitator and coach with a psychology background. Together we offer men a safe, nourishing way to connect and make sure no one has to go through the dark season alone — unless they choose to. ***Maybe it’s just what you need? Come along and see for yourself.*** *Wolf Huddle is a project by Zigmal e.V. – [zigmal.org](http://zigmal.org/)*

Politischer Diskurs - Wie schafft man Wirtschaftswachstum?
\*\*\* english version \*\*\* "Can a whale be a parakeet?" \~> Of course not! "Can a window be a drink?" \~> Everyone knows that's impossible. "Can a democracy be a republic?" "Can a conjecture be an opinion?" "Is grasping something the same as understanding something?" \~> Well, now it gets tricky! And it gets exciting... Nothing stimulates thought quite like this new party game. The rules: 1. Everyone writes a term on a slip of paper. 2. The slips of paper are drawn in pairs. 3. We project the meaning of the two words onto the wall using a projector. 4. Everyone can add to/edit the meaning using a laptop or smartphone, and must provide examples of why something could be the same, or could never be the same. 5. After a while, no one can think of anything else. The differences and similarities between the two words are clearly highlighted. Then the score is tallied: (+1) Each new entry adding meaning earns one point. (-2) However, each deleted entry deducts two points. (+5) Each improvement on the existing meaning in Reclue earns five points. The understanding of all players becomes much clearer, especially with frequent play. The goal for the entire group is to reach at minimum 50 points. The game also works in multiple languages. You may join us from home using the internet. Comments in meetup-app will be used to organize that it works. The location (somewhere in Prenzlauer Berg) will be published the day when it takes place.
I WRITE – A Silent Writing Club (Just You & Your Words)
I WRITE – A Silent Writing Club (Just You & Your Words)
Welcome to **I WRITE**, a gentle space for anyone who wants to write—quietly, freely, and without judgement. We are a Berlin community of writers who gather together weekly to write, talk and recharge after a long week. Some of us journal, some write novels, some do academic writing, many people come without a project in mind and see where the inspiration flow takes them. This is a space to simply show up and write, a safe place to be yourself and to release all your layers onto the paper. There’s no set topic, no feedback circle, and no pressure. Just warm people, a calm atmosphere, and time dedicated to yourself. 🗓️ **Agenda:** * 14:30 - 15:00 **→** 30 min arriving, optional socialising (arrive early, meet other writers) * 15:00 - 16:00 **→** 1 hour of silent writing (headphones welcome, focus encouraged) * 16:00–16:30 **→** 30 mins break + optional chat or solo time (stay and chat or go celebrate the rest of your Saturday) * 16:30–17:30 → 1 more hour of silent writing (for those staying) * 17:30–18:00 → 30 mins of chat, and leaving 🎒 **Bring:** * Something to write with (laptop, notebook, phone, typewriter… anything goes) * Something to drink (there is no cafeteria, unfortunately) * Your current project or a blank page * Yourself, exactly as you are **👉 Responsibility:** * Our location is limited; thus, I am kindly asking you to RSVP only if you are willing to attend. **📍Location:** * We meet at **Heinrich Schulz Library in Charlottenburg**. In the library, go look for the Gruppenraum; I will be waiting for you there. Any trouble finding the room, I will come to meet you outside. * 🚇 U7 **Richard-Wagner-Platz** * 🚌 M45 Bus **U Richard-Wagner-Platz** **About me:** Hi, my name is Anastasia. I started this writing club back in May 2025. Since then, it has been hosted weekly at the Heinrich Schulz Library (who is kind enough to allow us to use this room for free). Over this time, I’ve been privileged to meet some of the most creative and kind minds in Berlin. And I would be happy if you joined us. Whether you're an experienced writer or just at the beginning of your journey, you're welcome. If you know how to hold a pen or how to type, there will always be a space for you. Let's write together!

In-Person Event: The Answers to Depression & Anxiety
This is an in-person meeting. At this meeting you will get answers to depression and anxiety. Find out the source of them and how to get rid of them. Did you know that unwanted emotions like anxiety, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, hopelessness, anger, fear, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not due to a chemical imbalance in your brain from some nebulous chemical reaction "by chance". Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you. The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life. Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is created by the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation of Central Ohio and Church of Scientology of Central Ohio.

Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program: Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there! Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Jimmy V's Grill & Pub in Grandview Heights. You are responsible for your own meal/drinks. We usually don't have any agenda other than eat, drink and talk. :) If the weather is nice we will be on the back patio, otherwise we are in the cigar room. This group has been meeting every Tuesday evening for over a decade. Many attendees do not RSVP on meetup. Please don't let the small number here discourage you. Anyone/everyone is welcome to come. We'd love to have you join us. COTA bus #5 comes to W. 5th and Wyandotte Rd. And it's a minute walk to the restaurant. *** Did you know that there are atheists everywhere?!?! You may not know it, but we are! We're in your schools, diners, police force, military, government, and some are even still in your churches! So come and join us and meet other local atheists, along with agnostics, heathens, humanists, skeptics, and anyone else who's 'hell bound'! Vision: a Central Ohio that accepts atheism as a viable alternative in all areas of public and private life. Mission: grow, support, and provide community for atheists in Central Ohio. Social meetings held most Tuesdays at a local pub/restaurant at 7:00 PM (and often into the wee hours). Attendees call themselves agnostics, skeptics, humanists, non-theists, deists or even theists. All attendees are welcome but should support our vision. Atheists of Columbus (AoC) is part of Omnipresent Atheists (OA). AoC members are invited to join this OA meetup and/or OA Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/omnipresentatheists/ ) but are free to continue conversations on the AoC Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/columbusatheists/ ). AoC was founded in 2012 as a networking, social group for Central Ohio area humanists, skeptics, atheists, agnostics, nonbelievers, freethinkers, and the curious. It was a member of Columbus CoR and held weekly meetings, mostly on Fridays, for several years but then operated as an online only group for some time. In November 2018, Omnipresent Atheists (OA), a group that routinely meets on Tuesdays, invited AoC to merge. Omnipresent Atheists is a member of the Columbus Coalition of Reason (ColumbusCoR.org). Omnipresent Atheists is a member of the Columbus Coalition of Reason ( http://www.ColumbusCoR.org ). Omnipresent Atheists endorses the mission of the Secular Coalition for America ( http://secular.org ).
