Vienna.rb #67 - Ruby Spring Meetup
Vienna.rb #67 - Ruby Spring Meetup
Join us for the first meetup in 2026! ⭐️ Are you interested in the Ruby language or Ruby on Rails? Join us. We have great talks, good vibes, and yummy snacks! 😋 **Talks** \~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~ 🗣️ [Peter Solnica](https://solnic.dev/) ▶️ Structured Logging in Ruby: Where We Are and Where We're Heading 🗒️ Ruby's logging ecosystem is evolving, and there's a lot of momentum to build on. In this talk, we'll explore the current state of logging in Ruby and compare it with ecosystems like Elixir, where a more capable, well-designed logger is built right into the standard library. We'll dive into recent developments in Rails - including its new structured events API - and how they connect to the broader picture of structured logging, error handling, and tracing. Along the way, we'll build a vision for what Ruby's standard library could offer: a powerful, extendable logger that makes structured logging a natural part of every Ruby project. 🗣️ [Marie-Therese Fischer ](https://fischer.codes/) ▶️ Building Games with Ruby 🗒️ What do you end up with when you strip Rails from a Rails developer? Plain Ruby. Join me as I explore the language behind the framework through the lens of game development. By building a simple terminal game and a 2D platformer, I’ll break down the essential building blocks every game is built on - from loops and input handling to visuals. We'll look at how stepping away from the 'magic' of Rails to build games can lead to a deeper understanding of Ruby logic and application structure. 🗣️ [Christoph Lipautz](https://github.com/unused) ▶️ The Art of Testing Nothing 🗒️ Traditional CI/CD pipelines often waste significant resources re-validating unchanged code, creating a bottleneck in the development lifecycle. This session explores the results of my attempts to shift from exhaustive execution to smart omission. I'll discuss how doing nothing turns into a technical strategic advantage while maintaining confidence. **Location** **\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~** Mariahilfer Str. 97/4, 1060 Wien **Sponsors** \~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~ ⭐ [Meister](https://www.meisterlabs.com/jobs/) Founded in 2006 by Till Vollmer and Michael Hollauf, Meister’s journey from start-up to scale-up has been a story of continual growth. What started with a vision to create a simple visual mind-mapping tool has become not one but two collaborative tools that help teams everywhere focus on the work that matters. Thank you to Meister for hosting and providing us with refreshments and snacks! 🙌 \~\~\~ ⭐ Looking to sponsor or give a talk? We are looking for sponsors and speakers. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. Our goal is to ensure that every writer—regardless of genre or skill level—has access to the resources, community, and accountability that they need to be successful in their personal writing goals." And what this looks like at our event: We chat and give short introductions to what we are working on at 18:00, then start writing at 18:15. Though we try to start on dot, being late isn't a problem—just find a spot and get to work! We write until 20:00 and then discuss how our writing went. Hacking the Stack: Using OpenSearch Dashboards as an Application Framework
**Agenda:** * 6-6:30 pm: Networking and food/drinks * 6:30-7:15 pm: Announcements and presentation * 7:15 pm-7:30 pm: Q&A and close-out **Hacking the Stack: Using OpenSearch Dashboards as an Application Framework** Most developers treat OpenSearch Dashboards (OSD) strictly as a visualization layer—a place for charts and graphs. They are missing the bigger picture. OSD is a powerful, untapped environment for full-stack application development. In this session, we peel back the architecture of **an enterprise-grade risk, compliance, and security platform built entirely *on top of* OSD**. We moved beyond simple plugins and pushed OSD to its limits to create a seamless, interactive application experience. Join us for a deep dive into the engineering reality of the OpenSearch stack, including: * **The Analysis:** Why the OpenSearch stack beat out the competition. * **The Build,** **Beyond Visualization:** How to implement custom React components to build complex workflows and interactive UIs within OSD. * **The Integrations:** Integrating Wazuh for agent management and ingesting data at scale. * **The “Gotchas”:** Honest, real-world lessons on data handling, state management, and what to look out for. **If you are ready to push your plugins from “reporting tools” to “robust software,” do not miss this session!**

SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Terrors of Irish Fairylore
SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Terrors of Irish Fairylore
**This talk has completely sold out in advance and no door tickets will be available. It also is being staged at Penn Social in DC on March 16th and plenty of tickets remain available for that date.** [Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Terrors of Irish Fairylore,”** an introduction to Ireland’s strange and unsettling folkloric “Good People,” with Brittany Warman, former instructor at Ohio State University, co-founder of The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic, and co-author of the new book *Fairylore: A Compendium of the Fae Folk.* [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-irish-fairy-terrors](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-irish-fairy-terrors) .] Today it is common to think of fairies as small, childlike, sparkly creatures with glittering wings and dresses made from flower petals. But the fae of traditional Irish folklore were no such things. Amoral, capricious, even malicious when they chose to be, the too-frequently forgotten fairies of times long past would, more often than not, haunt nightmares. Join Brittany Warman, a folklorist who has earned a devoted following among Profs and Pints fans, as she explores the darker side of Irish fairylore. The figures she'll discuss include: The Leanan-Sidhe, a vampiric fairy who gives artistic inspiration in exchange for your mortal spirit. The Dullahan, a fairy with a human spine for a whip and a habit of hurtling across fields in a death coach made from human skin. The Banshee, a mournful fairy whose cry signals a death in the family to which she's attached herself. Dr. Warman also will examine the surprising impact of fairy folklore on two classics of Irish Gothic literature, Oscar Wilde's *The Picture of Dorian Gray* and Bram Stoker's *Dracula.* It’s a talk that will remind you that the relationship between the Irish and the spooky stretches well beyond Halloween. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image: “The Banshee Appears,” an 1862 illustration by Robert Prowse (Wicklow Heritage / Public domain).
