For better or worse, how we relate to others (and ourselves) is shaped by the world around us. One factor that shapes the way we relate to one another is *power*: Who holds the power, who is perceived to hold power, whether or not power is transferable, and finally, our placement within the hierarchical structures of power we inhabit. Power manifests in many forms — from animal predation, which many consider natural, to inequalities of ability and disability, and those based on race, gender, class, and sexuality. On a personal level, relationships in homes, classrooms, workplaces, public spaces and more can embody power dynamics we don’t always recognize, or which replicate patterns we have inherited from sources external to the relationship itself (family, culture, etc). Common beliefs about power seem full of ambiguity. In some cases, mentioning that power is part of a situation implies unfairness, corruption, or evil intent. At other times, we seek to encourage “empowerment,” to give power to those who have been oppressed, or to liberate people by helping them attain more power. At our upcoming Curiosity Café, moderated by Sophia Whicher and Bill Kroeger, we will talk about how power functions in our everyday lives and in society more broadly, and interrogate the relationship between power and inequality. We’ll explore questions like: * How does power influence the dynamics of our everyday lives? * How do different kinds of power influence different kinds of relationships? * What does power mean to you, and how does it connect to inequality? **Description** Coming Out Being Out (COBO) is a peer discussion group that has served the LGBT community for over 15 years in downtown Toronto. We meet to share stories and opinions, challenges and triumphs at all stages of coming out and being out. COBO participants are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit and questioning people. The next NoVABeerSec event - "Informal Gathering of Security Minds Over Beer'' will be Tuesday, June 23rd, 5:30PM til 7ish at Starr Hill Tysons Biergarten (1805 Capital One Dr S Suite 1100, Tysons, VA 22102). **Venue for June:** Starr Hill Brewery / Biergarten (Outdoor) **\*\*\* The Biergarten is primarily an outdoor venue, if the weather isn't cooperating we'll shift into Brewpub located on the ground level next to Capital One Hall \*\*\*** In the early 1990s, Charlottesville native, Mark Thompson took his biology degree from James Madison University and moved to Portland, Oregon, ground zero for craft beer’s growth in America. The natural blend of art and science poured into the brewing scene inspired him to take up the craft. Working alongside brewers in Oregon and Colorado, Mark honed his own artisan beer recipes. An old friend looking to start a brewpub and music hall back in Charlottesville eventually lured Mark back to Virginia. In September 1999, they partnered to found Starr Hill Brewery out of a passion for great beer and live music. Named after the local neighborhood, the brewery shared its original space with the Starr Hill Music Hall.
