Profs & Pints DC: Queer Country
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **āQueer Country,ā** on the long, often-hidden presence of LGBTQ+ performers in country music, with Tanya Olson, lecturer in English and scholar of gender and sexuality studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-queer-country ](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-queer-country) .]
Although country music is often thought of as conservative, rural, and straight, queer artists have always been part of its story.
Learn about the important role that queer artists, their ideas, and their experiences have played in country music with Tanya Olson, a cultural critic whose recent work explores the intersection of country music, identity, and tradition.
Sheāll talk about queer artists across generations, describing how they are hidden and what it means to stand in the circle of tradition without being seen. Sheāll explore how queerness shows up in the songs, stories, and sounds of country music even when it isnāt named, and also whatās at stake when those threads are left out of the history we tell.
Youāll leave with a deeper understanding of country musicās past, as well as a sharper eye for whoās been missing from the picture all along. Youāll gain an appreciation for why inclusion in country radio and the Grand Ole Opry matters, as well as an understanding of how a queer presence might strengthen, rather than threaten, country music's legacy.
Olsonās latest book of poetry, *Born Backwards*, builds on the language and imagery of country music to ask who gets remembered and why. Learning from her will make for a memorable evening. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Columbus Comedy Improv Meetup at Gresso's!
Whether you've never done improv before, or you've done it for so long you knew Del Close on a personal level, or anywhere in between, come join us! Swing by *Gresso's* for the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup** for some fun and games!
The idea behind improv is to create entire scenes from scratch based on a suggestion from the audience. This can be done in game form, like *Whose Line Is It Anyway*, *ComedySportz*, or *Wild 'n Out*; it could also be done to tell stories, like *Middleditch and Schwartz*. Our meetup, which is central Ohio's longest running (and free!) weekly comedy event, brings the games (and occasionally different forms) for you to play in a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment. Not only is it a lot of fun, but you get to work on thinking faster on your feet, plus it's an excellent way to meet new people and make friendships that'll last a lifetime!
Ask yourself if you want to join the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**, and say "Yes, And" that you'll have fun!

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for January is "Chemistry"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 7:00 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!

Drunken Philosophy: Is Life a Dream?
Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club.
Optional topic for this meet up: Is life a dream?
Dreams feel real while they last. Could life work the same way? How do we know weāre awake, and what follows if we canāt be sure?
Letās kick that around over a around of drinks:
⢠What makes something feel real: continuity, shared evidence, or meaning?
⢠How would you tell youāre awake (reality checks, memory, other people)?
⢠If life is dreamlike, what becomes of free will and responsibility?
⢠Is identity a story we keep tellingāwhoās the narrator?
⢠Are we author, actor, or audience in our dreams and how would you tell?
⢠Does art/film reveal reality or replace it?
No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if itās fun.
