Winter’s on the wane and signs of spring are popping up, making now a perfect time to appreciate the intermingling of the best of both seasons. Experience the beauty of bare tree architecture and the welcome sight of early bloomers on a stroll abounding with sensory delight at Green Spring Gardens, a local treasure. Tuning in with our senses, we’ll combine slow strolling with attentive pauses to deepen our connection with nature. Green Spring offers space for quiet enjoyment throughout the seasons, and is particularly noted for its collection of dozens of cultivated varieties of witch hazels of many colors. Their unusual flowers are among the earliest to open, often blooming amidst snow and ice, and they are in bloom now. There’s pussy willow (pictured) too. The health benefits of slowing down in quiet company among trees and plants with senses alert and aware are scientifically documented, but the best way to understand these benefits is to experience them yourself, preferably on a regular basis. IMPORTANT! The size of the group is limited! Please be sure to update your status asap on either the “going” or “wait list” if you sign up and find you can’t make it! These rides are normally based off the Arlington Loop, but this week we will go out West towards Centerville and do a 19.7 mile medium level ridden at a social pace (11-13 mph). We will ride East starting from the Ellanor C Lawrence/Woodlands Stewardship parking lot. We will take the I-66 Parallel Trail to the Big Rocky Run Trail at Fair Lakes. We have two gravel sections on Rocky Run. After passing by Ellanor Lawrence we hit Gavi at mile 10.8 in Sully Station. From there we loop over to the Cub Run Valley Stream Trail System. There is a short gravel section in Cub Run. The gravel sections are packed (may be a little softer after early week rain), but you might not want 23 or 25 mm road bike tires. **In a bold departure from our usual articles and short stories, this month we will be exchanging... seeds.** Bring what you’ve saved, thinned, or over-ordered. Trade, collect, compare notes on seed-starting setups, and swap stories about last season’s triumphs and failures. If you don’t have seeds to share, come anyway. You can learn, collect a few, and hang out with people who get genuinely excited about planting things. * Will we accidentally discuss the nature of generosity? Possibly. * Will someone bring up gift economies? Perhaps. * Will you leave with tomato seeds? Very likely. **Where:** This year we’ll be hosting at [Nova Labs](https://www.nova-labs.org/). Nova Labs is a local maker space—a collaborative workshop with tools, equipment, and creative people building everything from art to prototypes. (I'm a new member. It's a fantastic space!) We can mayyybe sneak in an impromptu tour. And if there’s interest, we can grab a drink afterward and keep the conversation—horticultural or otherwise—going. **Optional inspiration:** The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer, a short reflection on abundance and reciprocity in the natural world. Read it if you like. Or just come for the squash. **Bring:** Seeds, small envelopes or bags, and something to label your seeds with. And a seedy snack if you feel so moved!

Strenuous 19-mile, out-and-back, go-at-your-own pace, hike on one of the prettiest stretches of the towpath, with a 15-mile, out-and-back, option. Both hikes begin at Pennyfield Lock (mile 19.6). The 19-mile hikers go north, turn around at Mile Post 26, pass Pennyfield Lock, hike south to mile 16.6 (.4 miles past the Mile Post 17), turn around, and return to Pennyfield Lock. The 15-mile hikers go north, turn around at Mile Post 25, pass Pennyfield Lock, turn around at mile 17.5, and return to Pennyfield Lock. Bring water, lunch or snacks, and sun protection. Dress for the weather. All participants must sign a liability waiver at the start. SCPRO requests a voluntary donation of $2 per person to help support our all-volunteer program. Although open to all, this hike is part of a series of Saturday training hikes leading up to the [One Day Hike](https://www.meetup.com/sierrapotomac/events/304791832/) (ODH)—a 100 or 50 km hike along the C&O Canal—on May 2, 2026. **Gold Mine and Great Falls Overlook. A Moderate 6.5 Mile Hike** THIS IS A SECOND HIKE THAT IS LISTED FOR GOLD MINE DUE TO THE HIGH DEMAND. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT THIS HIKE STARTS AT GREAT FALLS PARK MD BECAUSE OF LIMITED PARKING AT ANGLER'S INN. NOTE: There is a $20 entrance fee per car unless you have a National Parks Pass. This hike features the remnants of a quirky gold mine and the classic overlook of Great Falls. The mine was established by a Union soldier who was stationed along the Maryland side of the Potomac River near Great Falls during the Civil War. He noticed a glint of gold and after the war, he returned to the area, bought some farmland, and started mining for gold. Eventually, 30 small mines were opened by various prospectors. One of the largest mines was the Maryland Mine. Today, little remains of these mines, but there is a loop trail that passes by one of them. The hike starts at the Great Falls Maryland Parking lot. The hike passes by the mine remains, and offers splendid views overlooking the Potomac river and visits the classic overlook of Great Falls. All who sign up will go on the waitlist. Wednesday afternoon, hikers will be moved to "going" based upon their ranking on the going or waitlist of the original hike. **Please note**: You must sign up by 9:00 PM the night before the hike. **Time to Meet**: Please meet at 9:45 for introductions and sign in.
