**ð£ïž PrzemysÅaw Pokrywka: Ports and Adapters for People on Tight Schedules**
Focus on software architecture is not always associated with pragmatism in common perception. Terms such as architecture astronautics and the ivory tower stereotype highlight the perceived disconnect between many architects and the realities of day-to-day code maintenance. Too often, architectural patterns are applied with insufficient understanding, leading to cargo-cult adoption and increased waste in the software development process. When applied in the right context, however, certain architectural approaches can be powerful enablers. In this talk, I would like to share the story of a serverless application in which elements of the Ports and Adapters architecture made a tangible, positive difference.
â PrzemysÅaw Pokrywka â
Husband, dad, grandad, software engineer. Functional Scala enthusiast with imperative OOP Java background. Fan of the command line.
**ð£ïž David Lebl: Complexity is a Sin, But Hexagons Forgive**
A visual journey from spaghetti to sanity. This talk traces how cognitive load accumulates in unconstrained codebases, how domain-driven design and bounded contexts restore order, and how hexagonal architecture provides a practical, forgiving structure for real-world systems â all laid out on a single zoomable canvas where every example links back to the bigger picture.
â David Lebl â
David is a software developer with a CS background and 5 years of Scala and FP experience. He leads a small team, occasionally survives his own accidental complexity, and is here to share what he learned the hard way.

Session 1 : CURIOSITY | Thought Experiments in Hertfordshire
**Welcome!**
Join us for **Thought Experiments in Hertfordshire**, a chance to meet new people and discuss interesting questions in a wonderful space. No experience necessary.
We will discuss three different thought experiments (you could also call them scenarios) on the theme of **Curiosity.**
This is one of our âtasterâ sessions which means you can try out Thought Experiments in Hertfordshire for free (tickets are usually £5).
The group is part of the [Thought Experiments in Pubs](https://alltogether.one/thoughtexperimentsinpubs) network so if you've been to one of those events, you'll know the score.
**What to expect**
We will discuss three thought experiments in small groups of four. There will be an opportunity to change groups between each thought experiment, so youâll get the chance to meet and talk to quite a few different people at each event.
At the end of the session weâll have a short get together as a whole group to share thoughts and âvoteâ on a few questions, so that you can get a sense of everyoneâs views.
After that feel free to stay and chat with your fellow thinkers!
A link to the thought experiments will be posted in the comments below on the day of the event, in case you want to read them ahead of time, but thereâs no requirement to do this.
**Who should come?**
Everyone. No experience required. Each session is standalone. The more perspectives, the richer the conversation. The vibe is calm and inquisitive so leave your boxing gloves at home!
If you have friends who are not on Meetup but who might enjoy this event, feel free to get an extra ticket for them when you sign up.
**The Venue**
The beautiful [Old Manor](https://www.the-old-manor.co.uk/) pub in Potters Bar. Dating back to the 13th century, the building is the surviving part of an old manor house.
Weâll be at the top of the stairs in a space called âThe Eavesâ. Ask at the bar if you can't find us!
**Address:** **The Old Manor, Wyllyotts Place, Darkes Lane, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, EN6 2JD.**
**By train:** the nearest station is Potters Bar (a 4 minute walk to the venue) with fast train links from Finsbury Park and Kings Cross as well as Welwyn Garden City and Cambridge.

June in-person read: 'The Temptation of St Anthony' by Gustav Flaubert
Dive into a meaningful **in-person discussion** at the Literature & Theology Reading Group's next meetup as we explore 'The Temptation of St Anthony' by Gustav Flaubert.
Flaubert spent fifty years of his life working and reworking this story about the temptation of a 3rd century hermit. The final work incorporates great poetry, theology, philosophy and ethical meditation.
**Each session is accompanied by a lecture** from Dr Aidan Cottrell-Boyce, exploring its spiritual and theological significance.
Please make sure you have **[sign up for this session](https://londonjesuitcentre.churchsuite.com/events/k4csoldk)** on our online portal. If you cannot attend in person, you can also [join us online](https://londonjesuitcentre.churchsuite.com/events/da1b7zhk) on 24 June.

freeCodeCamp x Encode | AI - Workshop: Vibecoding Using Local AIs
# Learn how to use open-source harnesses like OpenCode & Pi w/ your own LLM and with it, build a real-world application
**Registration to this event is only valid through the Luma platform:** [https://luma.com/11txn8gq](https://luma.com/11txn8gq?utm_source=meetup-dot-com)
âHello code campers!
âSince everyone is talking about using harnesses such as **Anthropic Claude** or **OpenAI Codex**, meaning, everyone is probably tired of hearing about them, we've decided to go in a different direction and explore other, lesser known things such as, [OpenCode](https://opencode.ai/?utm_source=luma) and [Pi DOT Dev](https://pi.dev/?utm_source=luma).
Come and join us and learn how to work with a wide range of open-source large language models (**LLMs**) such as **DeepSeek V4**, **Gemma**, **Kimi K2**, and **GLM** across various local-first environments. This comprehensive workshop is designed to teach you what is a code harness, how many types of them there are out there (you might be familiar with **Claude Code** or **Codex** or **CoPilot** but there are others and since the big-tech companies are moving to token-based usage, why not run your own solution locally). Also, we'll explore how to go about having effective agentic coding workflows while benchmarking model performance and hardware requirements.
âWe will go through the setup process, focusing on how to install the desired LLM runner like Ollama or LMstudio locally.
âThis will be our **7th** event in our series of **local-first, open-source** AI events; therefore, we will try to focus on building a setup that doesn't depend on Big Tech but on smaller open-source tech instead.
âThis workshop is open to all levels, from beginners to experts.
âBring your laptop (make sure it's fully charged as local LLMs tend to be power-hungry), and don't forget to bring your coding gear (hoodie).
âThis workshop will be most likely accompanied by a guest speaker (TBD).
***
## âPrerequisite
âPrerequisite: a local Ollama, LMStudio installation or equivalent (but if you don't have any of that, don't worry, come a bit early and we will help you).
âIf you want to take a quick look at the slides from the previous events fell free to do so:

Schedule:
6:00 p.m.: Socialize, eat, and drink. Improving will be providing pizza and beverages.
6:30 to 8:00 pm. Main meeting and presentation(s).
Topic: In this session, we will explore the concept of hyperdimensional computing (HDC), a brain-inspired method of computing. We'll begin by talking about neurons and the brain. Through simple Python examples weâll dive into HDC and answer: What it is? How does it work? And, how does it learn? We will review how other researchers have applied HDC and demonstrate how it can be used for solving cybersecurity tasks. Where deep learning fails, HDC excels. No supercomputer? No problem. HDC offers interpretability, low energy requirements, robustness to errors, online learning, on-device learning, and more. By pushing the difficult calculations into the embedding process, learning becomes a cinch. By the end of this talk, attendees will have everything they need to teach their own hyperdimensional computing models.

**Abstract**
*Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code*
Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs.
In this session, weâll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. Weâll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling.
The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. Weâll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options.
