Virtual Cells at ICLR'26 Conference
==DATE CHANGED==
May 27th's event is re-scheduled --> to Jun 17.
This month's meetup discusses 3 papers
from the ICLR 2026 conference held in April.
This won't be as much of a deep dive into one paper, but I'd like to give an overview / some intuition on latest modeling approaches in cell modeling & AI in biology.
1 - [scDFM](https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.07103) \- a **flow matching** model predicting cell transitions in the transcriptomics space as a result of applying perturbations
2 - [TxFM](https://openreview.net/pdf?id=NqZqClqtTK) - **a masked autoencoder style foundation model** trained on a well-curated transcriptomics dataset. Authors demonstrate: how important data quality is in biological models, outweighing sheer scale.
3 - [VCWorld](https://arxiv.org/abs/2512.00306) \- a **world model** approach for virtual cell simulation. A **white-box, cell simulator** approach that **combines structured biological knowledge with LLMs**

Google Cloud Budapest Meetup: AI-Native Engineering vs. Core Fundamentals
Google Cloud Budapest Meetup is back!
Join us on June 17th at the Aliz office in Budapest for an evening of deep-tech insights, practical engineering strategies, and networking with fellow Google Cloud and AI enthusiasts.
As AI tools reshape the development landscape, the definition of a "good engineer" is shifting. This meetup isn't about generic AI prompts - it's about the concrete skills and old-school engineering discipline required to build reliable, scalable, AI-native applications.
đ« The event is free, but seats are limited. **Save yours now! đ**

**Talk 1**
**Becoming a Context Engineering Professional in Your Domain** by TamĂĄs Imets (AI Solution Architect), Aliz
The most underrated skill in the AI era: context engineering. How to structure prompts, design context windows, and become a force multiplier in your technical domain. Practical patterns from the field that turn good engineers into AI-native practitioners.
**Talk 2**
**The Revenge of the Fundamentals: old-school ideas winning in the AI era** by Måté Czékus (Lead Architect) and Aamna Tayyab (Head of Delivery), Adroit Group
The core argument: LLMs accelerate code generation are non-deterministic and inconsistent by default, which makes foundational engineering practices and tooling more important then ever. Teams that skipped the fundamentals, or was still hand rolling checks when AI arrived are paying for it at integration boundaries â it'll be way more harder to guide agent to write compliant and consistent code, and even harder to review the huge amount that was generated.
Three fundamental tools doing more work than they get credit for:
* JSON Schema â enforcing the contract between modules
* TDD â writing the tests before the code
* Linters and formatters â static governance that guides the shapeand correctness what the model sometimes misses even with context
Måté brings a live demo: one real multi-cloud cost explorer example showing what AI tooling produces by default vs the disciplined version side by side.

Session #31 - Science, NOMA and the Limits of Knowledge
*âThe idea that we live in a universe without meaning is a difficult one to accept.â*
*â* Richard Dawkins
*âScience can tell us how the heavens go, but not why we are here.â*
*â* Stephen Jay Gould
**Session in english! Also available on [consciouspass.com](https://consciouspass.com/activity/philosophy-session-science-noma-and-the-limits-of-knowledge-2026-06-19/) for Karma Points.**
Science has transformed the world. It has allowed us to predict nature, cure diseases, build technologies, and understand ourselves better than any previous civilization.
But a question remains:
Are there limits to where science cannot reach? Should there be limits to science? What happens when science gets in other territories like culture, morals or values?
* **The scientific naturalist view**: reality is ultimately explained through physical processes.
* **NOMA** (Non Overlapping Magisteria) or the idea that science and religion answer different kinds of questions.
* **Critiques of scientism**: the belief that science is the only valid way of knowing.
Thinkers like Richard Dawkins, Stephen Jay Gould, and Mary Midgley approach these questions from very different directions.
**You do NOT need to have read any of the books**.
**Introduction of guests (15 minutes)**
We start with a short introduction of the topic and of the guests
* Which main driver do you think has the most influence on the outcome for a nation?
**Questions (1 hour and 45 minutes)**
1. What meaningful things are there that science will never be able to explain?
2. If a belief cannot be falsified, does that make it irrational?
3. If science explains how something happens, does it also explain why it matters?
4. Should we trust science because it is useful, or because it is true?
5. Evolution can explain why humans developed morality, would that make morality less real?
6. If the universe has no built-in meaning, can human-created meaning be just as real?
7. Would a world with perfect happiness but no truth be better than a world with suffering but genuine knowledge?
8. Is religion answering different questions than science, or are they competing?
9. If religions disappeared tomorrow, would humanity lose something important?
10. If a religious belief produces good consequences but is scientifically unprovable, should we keep it?
11. Is believing only what can be scientifically proven itself a belief that science cannot prove?
12. Can religion remain in a âseparate domainâ if it makes claims about reality (miracles, creation, afterlife)?
13. If science explains how humans came to believe in God, does that undermine the religious belief itself?
14. If only scientifically verifiable statements are meaningful, is that rule itself meaningful or scientifically provable?
15. Problem of induction: If something has always worked in the past, is that a good reason to trust it will work in the futureâor just a habit of thinking?
16. Problem of uniformity: Why do we trust that a star 10 billion light-years away follows the same rules as experiments on Earth?

**Tech Talk: Secure Developer Environments in the Age of AI Agents**
**Speaker:** Patrick Brown (Coder)
**Abstract:** Federal engineering teams are under pressure to ship faster while meeting some of the most demanding security and compliance requirements in the world. In this talk, Patrick Brown of Coder explores how cloud development environments (CDEs) give agencies a foundation to accelerate software delivery without sacrificing control â and why that foundation matters even more as AI-powered coding agents enter the workflow. He'll cover how CDEs keep source code off endpoints, enforce zero-trust access patterns, and provide the consistent, ephemeral infrastructure that both human developers and AI agents need to operate safely at scale.
**Speakers:**
Stay tuned as we are updating speakers and schedules.

[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **âCan Artificial Intelligence âSeeâ?â** A look at how humans and artificial intelligence systems interpret the visual world in fundamentally different ways, with Arryn Robbins, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Richmond and cognitive scientist who researches visual attention, perception, and category learning.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-can-AI-see](https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/profsandpints/nv-can-AI-see) .]
Artificial intelligence can now identify faces, categorize objects, describe scenes, and outperform humans on certain visual tasks. But does AI actually âseeâ the world the way that people do? Or does it arrive at correct answers using representations that differ markedly from human perception?
Join Arryn Robbins of the University of Richmond for a fascinating exploration of how humans and AI construct meaning from visual information and a look at comparisons between human perception and AI that reveal just how dynamic and context-dependent our own visual systems really are.
Dr. Robbins, who previously has given excellent Profs and Pints talks on flaws and biases in human visual perception, will draw from research in cognitive science, visual perception, and AI vision systems.
Sheâll explain how human perception is not merely a simple recording of the world, but an active process shaped by expectations, context, goals, and recent experience. Youâll learn how humans form flexible mental representations that allow us to recognize objects across changing environments and conditions, and why those representations continuously adapt as we interact with the world.
Many AI systems, by contrast, learn visual categories through statistical patterns in data. They can produce impressive results, but sometimes they also produce strange and unexpected failures, and sometimes they classify images in ways that seem strange to us.
Dr. Robbins will discuss what these differences reveal about the nature of perception itself, and why the mismatch between human and AI representations matters for technologies like self-driving cars, medical imaging, facial recognition, and automated surveillance.
Important for anyone trying to understand the rapidly growing role of AI in daily life, this talk will explore one of the biggest questions in cognitive science and artificial intelligence: What does it actually mean to âseeâ and understand the world? (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)
