Mercè Rodoreda Book Club Series: Session 5 — Final Discussion
As part of our **Mercè Rodoreda Book Club Series (January–May)**, we invite you to join us for a special **closing session** dedicated to *Journeys and Flowers* (*Viatges i flors*) and to celebrating the reading journey we have shared over the past months.
Originally, this final session was due to feature translator **Nick Caistor**, who unfortunately can no longer join us due to a scheduled medical operation. We send him our warmest wishes for a smooth recovery.
Rather than cancel our final gathering, we wanted to embrace the spirit that has made this series so meaningful: readers coming together in conversation.
This session will take on a more open **book club format**, where all attendees are warmly invited to participate, reflect, and share.
Together we will discuss:
🌿 *Journeys and Flowers* — one of Rodoreda’s most imaginative and singular works
🌿 Favourite books and moments from the series
🌿 How reading Rodoreda in community has shaped the experience
🌿 The legacy and literary world of one of Catalonia’s most beloved writers
Whether you joined us for one session or many, we would love to welcome you for this final conversation.

Understanding the speed of MotoGP with Adam Wheeler
MotoGP is a mainstream championship in Spain and in many other countries in the world. Books on the series have explored the history, the icons, the technology but not many have taken the fan or follower directly into the paddock and all the personalities, engineering and psychology that goes with a motorcycle sport pushing at 225mph.
Author **Adam Wheeler** will chat about how and why he wanted to present this enthralling spectacle to wider consciousness with some other journalists.
**[ORDER THE BOOK HERE](https://backstorybookshop.shop/product/motorcycle-grand-prix/)**
## About the speaker:
**Adam Wheeler** is an award-winning journalist who contributes to the Telegraph, edits and owns On-Track Off-Road magazine, and is part of the Paddock Pass Podcast team. He has been working in and around MotoGP for over twenty years. He lives in Barcelona.
## About the book:
***Motorcycle Grand Prix*** takes readers inside the 75-year-old FIM World Championship — not through race results and lap times, but through the human stories behind them. Each chapter tackles a separate subject, moving from riders and team managers to mechanics, doctors, physiotherapists and engineers, stitching individual perspectives into a bigger picture of what it actually takes to compete at this level.
Drawing on exclusive interviews with Pecco Bagnaia, Jorge Martín, Brad Binder and Jack Miller, as well as reflections on Valentino Rossi, Marc Márquez and Cal Crutchlow, Wheeler goes well beyond the paddock gossip. The book covers talent, obsession, injury, and the extraordinary technical arms race between manufacturers — with none of the glamour and all of the reality.

June Book Club Meetup
Welcome, readers!
Our June read is ***Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible*** ***Voyage***
**by Alfred Lansing.**
A work of nonfiction, and one of the most astonishing survival stories in history, we follow Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew after their ship is crushed by Antarctic ice. Stranded in one of the harshest environments on Earth, the men endure months of isolation, freezing temperatures, and near starvation—yet refuse to give up hope. Lansing brings their ordeal to life through vivid detail and firsthand accounts, capturing both the brutality of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, the story is a powerful testament to leadership, perseverance, and the unbreakable will to survive against impossible odds.

Lady Maximilian is the daughter of the powerful Duke Croyso, but she is rarely allowed outside her family’s sprawling castle for fear that her stutter will tarnish their noble name. When she is forced to marry Sir Riftan, a lowborn knight caught in one of her father’s schemes, Maxi doesn’t dare hope for happiness, let alone love. Her stumbling communication and his gruff manner sour their relationship before it can begin, and Riftan leaves without a word the morning after their vows are exchanged.
Now, three years after their disastrous wedding night, Riftan has returned as a war hero. To Maxi’s surprise, despite rumors that he was offered marriage to Princess Agnes, a beautiful and renowned sorceress, Riftan still wants Maxi for his wife. And when he comes to claim her, his longing becomes a desire that bewilders Maxi, even as she is overcome by the scorching heat that Riftan’s presence ignites within her. As she learns to navigate the intricacies of her new life, Maxi will find herself and her courage, and discover that she is anything but powerless.

Book summary:
On a hot day in Bethlehem, a twelve-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.
"Metal Slinger" by Rachel Schneider
Join us as we discuss our June pick: Metal Slinger by Rachel Schneider!
Book description:
Even though she's not one of them, Brynn has spent her life among the Alaha, training to be a guard and waiting for the chance to attend the annual market hosted by the Kenta–the very same people who exiled her adopted community to a life at sea. Going to the market is a rite of passage eagerly anticipated by all young guards, but Brynn does not anticipate breaking a century-long peace treaty while there. Nor does she plan for the intense encounter with an enemy soldier that now threatens to unwind the fragile coexistence between their people–and everything Brynn once believed about herself to be true.
Brynn's loyalty to the Alaha is tested when the truth of her identity is brought to light by this soldier who's taken an oath to bring her back to where she belongs. Narrowly escaping death on the violent high seas, Brynn's connection to the Alaha is further tested when she learns about the world of magic she's been denied. She was once certain of her fate and where she belonged, but the dark, knowing eyes of this stranger have her questioning everything, including her heart.
Packed with knife fights and seafaring adventure, METAL SLINGER is the smash-hit start to the romantic fantasy duology, the Fire & Metal series
