SOLD OUT โข TEiP ON THE HOUSE โข PORTOBELLO โข SEASON 4 EPISODE 2: PERSUASION
Our BIG FREE Friday night episode of Thought Experiments in Pubs.
Join us to think (and imagine) out loud with an openminded group of people from all walks of life :-)
This time we'll be talking about "PERSUASION".
We'll explore the theme using three **thought experiments** (posted in the comments below on the day of the event)
**The aim of this meetup:** meet new people and have different, thought provoking conversations.
You can get a sense of what the events and community are like **[here](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs/)**.
**[WHATSAPP GROUP](https://chat.whatsapp.com/D13LHw5BV3rEtUtO3ORklC)** \- stay in the loop
**[SUBSTACK](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/)** \- get our newsletter
**[INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs/)** & **[FACEBOOK](https://facebook.com/thoughtexperimentsinpub)** \- bits and pieces about the people\, the thought experiments\, and the community
**How we'll do it** (timings approximate)**:**
* **6:30** \- Arrive at the pub\, find us in the dining room
* Organise ourselves into small groups (4-7ish...recent research finding: apparently 4 is the best number for a good conversation!)
* Have a look at the thought experiments (posted here on the day of the event)
* **6:45** \- First rotation begins \- Talk about the first thought experiment\. If you donโt want to talk about that one\, move on to another one\. Feel free to veer off topic\.
* **7:05** \- Optional shuffle: swap groups\, move on to the second thought experiment\.
* **7:30** \- Optional shuffle: swap groups\, move on to the third thought experiment\.
* **7:55** \- Wrap up \- hear about upcoming events\, join the whatsapp group\, give feedback/requests for future meetups\.
* **8:00** Meetup โendsโ. But feel free to carry on conversations :-)
**Notes on the general atmosphere:**
* The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic.
* While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough!
* Feel free to suggest ideas for future episodes of Thought Experiments in Pubs, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss.
**Where we'll meet:**
This group will be at the Earl of Lonsdale Pub on Portobello. The nearest Tube station is Notting Hill Gate.
**Who should come:**
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc. etc....
Looking forward to meeting & talking with you!

QTIPOC Meal
Are you LGBTQIA+ *and* a Person of Colour? Do you want to meet others of similar backgrounds, in a relaxed and welcoming space? Look no further!
After the successful turnout at UK Black Pride, it has come to our attention that there is still demand for specific QTIPOC *(Queer, Trans and Intersex People of Colour)* spaces. It can be hard to find people of shared experiences across intersections, so we're trialling this space with that in mind.
Join Aaron for a friendly, relaxed meal at Nando's, located near the river in Kingston. No agenda - just food, fun and friends!
While respectful allies have been welcomed as *guests* in certain spaces, we kindly ask that this event is a Safe Space for QTIPOC only. POC explicitly includes Mixed Race People Of Colour.
This will be our **\*second ever\*** QTIPOC group meal, so if all goes well, there is capacity for regular future meetups. If you have any ideas for what you would like to see for local QTIPOC, we will be more than happy to hear your suggestions.
**Nervous about not knowing anyone?** Try not to be! Nobody knew each other initially at our previous socials, but everybody left smiling and feeling more connected to community. We do exist!
**Meal is at Nando's Kingston, 37-38 High Street, London, KT1 1LQ**
While there is no option to book, we shall meet at the restaurant for **18:30**, please arrive on time, so we can order and eat together.
**Spaces are limited, please confirm attendance by:**
**1.) Answering the pre-requisite questions.**
**2.) Confirming with Aaron you are definitely attending, either by direct message, a comment on here or via email** aaron@kingstonlgbtforum.org.uk
**Please note, your place is not secure without these communications. If you can no longer make it, please inform Aaron asap and change your RSVP. QTIPOC events are few and far between and this ensures that everyone can access a much-needed, valuable space.**
**Access:** Please see below AccessAble link for access information. Please do not hesitate to reach out regarding any access queries and we shall do our best to get these answered. We strive to make our events as inclusive as possible and understand the additional difficulties faced by disabled QTIPOC.

We look forward to seeing you!
**Support Us**: Kingston LGBTQ+ Forum is run by unpaid volunteers and funded by the generosity of the local community. If you'd like to support Kingston LGBTQ+ Forum, [please click here](https://www.kingstonlgbtforum.org.uk/donate).

What about crime?
We see alarming rise in excesses of policing, whether it's ICE's terror operations in the US, or oppression of the pro-Palestine movement or climate activists here in the UK.
We see unjust sentences and immoral laws throughout the world, guided by systems set up by a small number of privileged people.
Is there an alternative?
**Let's discuss** what the anarchist theory suggests for mitigating anti-social behavior in a way that is humane, kind, and focused on repair and rehabilitation.
We will use the chapter on crime from an Anarchist FAQ, please give it a read: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/custom/458965.pdf
Here is a small excerpt:
> *by reorganizing society so that it empowers everyone and actively encourages the use of all our intellectual, emotional and sensuous abilities, crime would soon cease to be the huge problem that it is now. As for the anti-social behavior or clashes between individuals that might still exist in such a society, it would be dealt with in a system based on respect for the individual and a recognition of the social roots of the problem. Restraint would be kept to a minimum. Anarchists think that public opinion and social pressure would be the main means of preventing anti-social acts in an anarchist society.*
A few questions that will get the conversation started:
1. What are the pros and cons of the specialized justice systems prevalent in Western societies?
2. What ideas from the text do you like? What do you disagree with?
3. How do you imagine a perfect justice system?
Please join the discussion, and see you there!
Free Human Towers Rehearsal + Social (Sunday)
Sunday rehearsal with Castellers of London. Meet us at the OBC Community Centre to help build human towers!
This get together is a great opportunity for you to meet new friends, socialise and have a go and explore your abilities as a human tower builder a.k.a Casteller!
For newcomers we have a team of trained Castellers who will introduce you to the group, guide you through the activity and help you safely take part in this unique Catalan tradition.
When you arrive just approach us as we are really friendly! If in doubt ask for Cuss! Please let us know if you are bringing guests.
After the rehearsal we go to a nearby pub for social drinks where everyone is welcome :)
What do you need?
1. Ideally a cotton shirt: to protect your neck and shoulders, the more durable the shirt/top the better. We do not recommend any thin items of clothing!
2. Jeans: allowing you to move freely without breaking.
3. Mask: We still require the use of a mask as you will be very close to your fellow Castellers - basically you will be hugging people!
The rest of the equipment is on us!
We take health and safety very seriously, both in relation to COVID-19 and also the activity- please be assured that the safety of all participants is of the utmost importance to us and we take all necessary precautions to minimize the risk, ensuring we all have a great time!
Our regular members won't be filling in the Meet Up to say they are going ๐
So don't be put off if you see only a handful have said they are going.
A minimum of 25 on the day is normal. What the Meet Up may show is how many new people like yourself are going.

LCC CITY DRIFTING: Isle of Dogs to Thamesmead [WEST LONDON]
Welcome back ramblers, rovers, loungers and loafers and happy 2026!
It's a new year, but we're picking where we left off, in the onetime capital of cockney London with its dockworkers and gangsters, the Isle of Dogs - which became the landing-pad for an invasion of alien Thatcherites in the 1980s with the construction of Canary Wharf, which now towers over the council estates and parklands of this misunderstood peninsula. From there we'll head west, looking eventually to end up in the Brutalist wonderland (featured in Kubrick's *Clockwork Orange*!) of Thamesmead, possibly by way of the free Woolwich Ferry service from north shore to south.
Meet at Canary Wharf station, out in front of the big curved class canopy. Elizabeth Line services at Abbey Wood will get us home. See you there!
Check planned TfL disruptions here - our day should be all clear for most everybody: https://content.tfl.gov.uk/planned-track-closures.pdf
A little background on our City Drifting project here:
**Now just wait a minute. What the hell is a drift ([dรฉrive](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%A9rive))?** A drift is any unplanned journey through the urban landscape in which participants practice a form of radical mindfulness, collectively exploring new ways of relating mentally, ideologically and materially to the "ordinary" urban environment we all think we know so well.
First theorised publicly by Situationist thinker, artist and provocateur Guy Debord in his 1956 essay *[Theory of the Dรฉrive](https://libcom.org/article/theory-derive-guy-debord)*, drifting is a sort of *critique of ideology* done by walking, looking, and feeling. **The urban environment of London is not a neutral space:** it is packed with surveillance equipment, anti-homeless architecture, consumerist [Gruen transfers,](https://www.smartcapitalmind.com/what-is-the-gruen-transfer.htm) crowd management systems and security perimeters, among a thousand other subtle and not-so-subtle methods of population control. Moreover, our everyday relationship to the city and its pathways is conditioned deeply by our habits of movement and our habitual perceptions: our commute to work, to school, our nips down to the shops, etc. **All these routines create what Marxists call a *reified* relationship with the urban environment: through over-familiarity it becomes something seemingly natural, "just there", ordinary, unchangeable - boring.** This boredom and familiarity kills the radical imagination, without which we're fucked.
To be able to start to imagine how society could be transformed, we also need to imagine how spaces, buildings, their use, their whole purpose (and who these serve) could themselves be transformed. A necessary step in this process, according to Debord and the Situationists, is the drift. Like the 19th-century gentleman *[flรขneur](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fl%C3%A2neur),* by wandering the city with an attitude of "fresh eyes", we can shake loose our ingrained sense of what London and its streets are like. **As a collective, we will work to "estrange our senses" and see the streets, buildings and people differently, as if we were encountering them for the first time.** That is to say: these aren't just random walks around London - with the right frame of mind, they will be opportunities to turn the world upside down, if only for a moment!
But don't take it from me - as Debord observed:
*"In a dรฉrive one or more persons during a certain period **drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.** Chance is a less important factor in this activity than one might think: from a dรฉrive point of view cities have [psychogeographical](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychogeography) contours, with constant currents, fixed points and vortexes that strongly discourage entry into or exit from certain zones."*
See you on the streets comrades, and remember, as [Raoul Vaneigem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raoul_Vaneigem) once wrote: *"All space is occupied by the enemy. We are living under a permanent curfew. Not just the cops โ the geometry".*

Humanist Community Celebrating Darwin Day
Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Free In-Person Meeting: Healing from Trauma and Past Betrayals
This is a free, in person meeting.
Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to โpin the blameโ on someone or something. If you donโt find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, donโt know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe youโve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
โข How to โeraseโ the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isnโt always repeating past mistakes.
โข Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
โข Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
โข Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
โข Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
โข What underlies โcorrosive criticismโ or the need to invalidate self or others?
โข How one can stably change oneโs outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
โข Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
โข How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
โข How to enhance oneโs own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or oneโs career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are โstoredโ and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can โeraseโ those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become โtoxicโ personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you wonโt be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
We look forward to having you join us!
This class is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.

Engaging in menโs work is the new way to forge friendships while being open-minded to personal growth. Many men experience healthier relationships, personally and professionally, by engaging in this work.
Open Menโs Group is a container for men to share vulnerably without receiving judgment or feedback.
We believe that emotionally mature, powerful, compassionate, and purpose-driven men will help heal some of societyโs deepest wounds. We support the powerful brilliance of men and we are willing to look at, and take full responsibility for, the pain we are also capable of creating โ and suffering. We care deeply about men, our families, communities, and the planet.
