Billy Goat Trail - Sections B and C (NOT the rock scramble section)
Billy Goat Trail - Sections B and C (NOT the rock scramble section)
This is an alternitive week hike on the Maryland side of the Potmac on Billy Goat trail sections B and C. Section B recently reopened after being closed for several years due to flood damage and is under 2 miles long. . It has no significent rock scrambles. Section C is the easiest section of the Billy Goat Trails and is similar to our usual hikes at Great Falls park. Section length is 1.6 miles and we will be walking an additional mile on the C&O Canel towpath to complete a loop. Hiking both trails and the C & O Canal towpath connecting them will be about 6 miles total. We will meet at the Carderock Recreation Area off the Clara Barton Parkway. Cross over the Parkway and turn right to enter the park, then turn right at the stop sign and immediately left into the first parking lot. Parking is free. **NOTE: The photo above DOES NOT depict the trail; it shows the top of the rock climbing area at Carderock. We will follow the actual trail to view the rock faces safely from the bottom.**
Spring into Rock Creek Park Hike
Spring into Rock Creek Park Hike
Saturday will be almost 60 degrees - the perfect weather to check out the early signs of Spring in Rock Creek Park! The hike is mostly downhill or level except for the final segment, a climb from Beach Drive up Porter Street to Connecticut Avenue and a climb up from a small hill near Pierce Mill. ❶ **What we’ll do:** * Departing from Cleveland Park Metro Station, on the TARGET side of Connecticut Ave NW, we’ll walk north a half block and turn right onto Porter Drive and follow it east to Rock Creek. From there we’ll walk north through beautiful Rock Creek Park, along Western Ridge Trail, Beach Drive, and Valley Trail to Rapids Bridge, where we'll turn around and retrace our route. In addition to the beautiful fall colors, we’ll pass a couple of historic sights along our way: * [Boulder Bridge](http://tinyurl.com/kyua6o9), one of the earliest extant bridges in Rock Creek Park. Constructed in 1902, the bridge is a Melan reinforced concrete arch bridge with a unique boulder facing that blends into the bridge's surroundings. * [Peirce Mill](https://tinyurl.com/y9u64k6k) , built in the 1820s, was grinding wheat for local farmers until the 1890s, when the US Government purchased it as part of Rock Creek Park. Hard times have always been good news for the mill: it was renovated twice under public works projects auspices, once as part of the Public Works Administration in 1936 and more recently as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2011. * The walk is 5.1 miles and should take about 2 hours. The path is fairly level except for the descent into and out of Rock Creek streambed. The surface is a mix of dirt and paved and pretty easy going throughout. * There is an [old-style Italian deli](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=vace%27s%20italian%20deli&tbs=lrf:!1m4!1u3!2m2!3m1!1e1!1m4!1u2!2m2!2m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e2!1m4!1u22!2m2!21m1!1e1!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e1!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:9&tbm=lcl&rflfq=1&num=10&rldimm=10778690468746188451&lqi=ChN2YWNlJ3MgaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpSIrbzePngICACFonEAAQARACGAAYARgCIhN2YWNlJ3MgaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpKgQIAxACkgEEZGVsaZoBJENoZERTVWhOTUc5blMwVkpRMEZuU1VRMk9EVjFNbXBCUlJBQqoBHwoJL20vMDl5MmsyEAEqECIMaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpKADgAQA&phdesc=clTALiFHOKU&ved=2ahUKEwiK9_Te7bv8AhUoM1kFHZdeCKYQvS56BAgLEAE&sa=X&rlst=f#rlfi=hd:;si:10778690468746188451,l,ChN2YWNlJ3MgaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpSIrbzePngICACFonEAAQARACGAAYARgCIhN2YWNlJ3MgaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpKgQIAxACkgEEZGVsaZoBJENoZERTVWhOTUc5blMwVkpRMEZuU1VRMk9EVjFNbXBCUlJBQqoBHwoJL20vMDl5MmsyEAEqECIMaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpKADgAQA,y,clTALiFHOKU;mv:%5B%5B39.1842519,-77.05127639999999%5D,%5B38.9198496,-77.1609544%5D%5D;tbs:lrf:!1m4!1u3!2m2!3m1!1e1!1m4!1u2!2m2!2m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e2!1m4!1u22!2m2!21m1!1e1!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e1!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:9) named Vace's a block from the hike start/finish point that has great pizzas by the slice. * Google map: [https://tinyurl.com/y77hxr2v](https://tinyurl.com/y77hxr2v) ❷ **How to get there:** * Metro: Cleveland Park Metro Station is on the Red Line. ADMO Boulder Bridge Loop
ADMO Boulder Bridge Loop
Brisk-paced (2.5-3 mph) --approximate 5.6 mile loop starting from Pitango (1841 Columbia Rd NW) in Adams Morgan. We are going to stick to the pavement on this walk to avoid the sloppy and slippery trails. From Pitango we will walk down Calvert and drop into Rock Creek Park. After passing Pierce Mill we will walk to Boulder Bridge. We will return on Rock Creek Trail and up to Walter Pierce Park on our way back to ADMO. There will be several hills going up and down, one being pretty steep. Bring plenty of water and some snacks. Dress in layers, wear a hat and be sure to wear sturdy, comfortable footwear. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Brunch in ADMO after the hike is an option. This is a joint hike between the ADMO Hiking Club and the Sierra Club. All hikers will be required to sign the Sierra Club waiver form to participate. Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings (SCPRO) appreciates a voluntary $2 per person donation to support our many volunteer-led activities. Also, you can become a Sierra Club member by clicking "join" on the Virginia Sierra Club website: [http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia](http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia) Dupont Circle is the closest Metro stop (.6 miles). Bus routes C51, C53, D70, and D74 are all within a couple blocks of Pitango. There is metered and free street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Please arrive early so you have enough time to find parking.
Keys Gap to David Lesser Shelter (7 miles, 948 ft)
Keys Gap to David Lesser Shelter (7 miles, 948 ft)
Join us for a pleasant and relatively gentle hike on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. The highlight of this hike is the David Lesser Shelter, which features a swing, large seating and picnic areas and other minor attractions. The trail has only a moderate amount of elevation. However, we consider this hike moderately challenging due to its length. We’ll move at a steady 2-3 mph pace with a break at the aforementioned Lesser Shelter, which is also our turn-around point. We'll take other quick breaks on the trail as needed. Please carry a minimum of 1 to 1.5L of water with you. After the hike we will go to nearby Harvest Gap Brewery. Meet time & location: We'll meet at 8:15 am at the East Falls Church (EFC) metro station to consolidate into as few cars as possible given the limited parking at the trailhead. The trailhead is about an hour from EFC. Route: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/west-virginia/appalachian-trail-keys-gap-to-david-lesser-memorial-shelter Brewery (also has food): https://harvestgap.com/ CARPOOLING: We encourage those with cars to be willing to carpool - you're the ones who make LMH great! Friday Night Fitness Skate
Friday Night Fitness Skate
Join us for the Friday Night Fitness Skate! A 12 or 8 mile fitness skate that skates the same route each week so you will know the route and pavement hazards (since it is dark) and be able to work on form, endurance or speed as the cold wind is pushing against you! ;) The route has nice long stretches of uninterrupted skating, open roads with very few cars and the regroups are short and infrequent. We will meet at Freedom Plaza at 7pm as long as it is not raining, snowing and the pavement is not wet or icy. We’ll warm up with a skate to the Capital and then skate along the mall and museums to the National Monument. We will then head to the Lincoln Memorial through the World War II Memorial. From the Lincoln we will proceed to Haynes Point down Ohio Drive with the option to take the 3 mile Haynes Point loop (12 mile total skate) or practice stops or stunts at the regroup spot while others skate the loop (8.5 mile total skate.) The skate is mostly flat on good pavement with a small slope coming down from the Washington Monument and a 40 yard small slop from the Lincoln to Ohio Drive and a couple patches here and there. The wind can be very strong and cold especially on Ohio Drive and Haynes Point as we skate adjacent to the water. Please feel free to jazz up your gear with lights, I wear a helmet bike light (since it is pretty dark) and a set of body lights. Most of the regulars skate with lighted wheels for fun! Wear your lights so you have fun, can see and be seen! In case of bad weather, I will update this post via the comment section around 6pm on Friday. Of course, all skating is at your own risk. Hope you will come join us!
