VMO: Massanutten Death March (71 miles)
VMO: Massanutten Death March (71 miles)
Yes, it's already approaching that special time of year... time for the Massanutten Death March! After consulting Jen and a few others, I'm putting up this placeholder with dates, and more details can be added or amended later. To quote Michael: "DCUL's annual spring lap around Massanutten... is always a good test of your backpacking chops and your fitness coming out of the winter." To quote me, "You might cry. You might develop the largest blisters you ever had! Aaaaand... you might come back next year for more torture..." I'm sticking with the classic version. So, we'll do the trip clockwise, Elizabeth Furnace to Veach Gap on Thursday (roughly 10m), Veach Gap to Waterfall Mountain on Friday (24m). Waterfall to Edinburgh Gap on Saturday (21m), and then back to the Signal Knob Parking lot (15m). NOTE: These splits are copied from last year's event and they do not match the Caltopo below, partly because the Sat/Sun splits show camping at Mudhole Gap but I'm going with Edinburgh Gap. We can make an updated Caltopo later. And, I know not everyone likes the Edinburgh campsite, but I don't want to add an extra 5 miles to Mudhole Gap on Saturday. We'll tag a few volunteers to reserve spaces. If anyone would like to post a complementary Half-a-nutten (is that canonical language?) or LM trip for the same weekend, feel free! I'll start group size at 10 plus myself, as Michael did last year. But we may add more spots later. You should be a veteran member to undertake this! It's always a memorable weekend! The Central Maryland Rock and Mineral Collectors Exchange Monthly Meetup
The Central Maryland Rock and Mineral Collectors Exchange Monthly Meetup
**CMRMCE** meetup Meetings start at 7 pm Meeting address: 6425 Abel St Elkridge MD 21075 Our meetings are always free and open to everyone. Our meetings are informal, and we tend to discuss whatever anyone has brought with them to show as well. We also discuss local rockhounding ideas. Even though we usually plan to wrap up around 9 pm, most of us are usually still chatting at 10. It is amazing the amount of knowledge that we share with each other and the body of knowledge that we have as a group. All of our meetings have been great (even when only a few show up). I do ask that you RSVP for our meeting, but... if you haven’t RSVP'd and would still like to come to the meeting – please do. The RSVP helps the meeting by showing others that we do have a group and that there will be a meeting that night. If you RSVP’d yes and can’t make it, that’s OK too (you can always change your RSVP at any time). I hope that you will consider attending (newbie or Guru). Our group has been meeting for over 10 years now. We have over 350 total members and we’ve maintained a 5-star rating for our meetings. I believe that you will enjoy yourself and we will enjoy your company as well. As always, everyone is invited to our meetings (including your non-Rockhound guests). Our meeting size averages about 4 to 9 members per meeting, but we have had as many as 14 attend. I hope you can make it, we are very informal, and if you can, bring something (rocks, fossils, **yard rock**, book, map, or **whatever**) that you would like to discuss. I truly look forward to meeting you. ***Wayne Homens*** Founder, **C**entral **M**aryland **R**ock and **M**ineral **C**ollectors **E**xchange 410-419-2963 (Mobile) http://www.meetup.com/rockhounds
DC Metro Crafts @ Merry Pin (Georgia Ave NW)
DC Metro Crafts @ Merry Pin (Georgia Ave NW)
Let's take another field trip out of SW. [Merry Pin](https://www.merrypindc.com/) at 7350 Georgia Ave., NW is kindly allowing us to crash their monthly Sip and Stitch, where we can indulge in adult drinks and light snacks as we craft. And as well-situated as the library is, the atmosphere is rather austere whereas Merry Pin is.... merry. And crafty. Their event starts at 5:30pm but they're open until 9 so don't feel pressured to get there early. I intend to get to Georgia Ave-Petworth station around 5-5:15 and make a judgment call about taking the D40 for 20 minutes up Georgia ave or a lyft/uber for a 15 minute ride. Depending on how many of us make it at 5 (I know it's early), I might just pay for a car and make all of our lives easier. If you rsvp and want to meet me at the station, please leave a message in the comments so I know to look for you. Note: The crafting area is up a flight of stairs if that poses any issues.

Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Cafés are gatherings around the world where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing the Socratic Method; the idea that we learn more when we question, and question with others. Although this may be considered a "philosophical" group, there are no rules as to what is discussed. Those attending decide upon the questions of the night. Usually, the topics revolve around social concerns, moral issues, and the first principles of things. Prior to each meeting we vote online for the questions we will discuss. That way, we will have enough time to ruminate on them and have more in-depth conversations. If you RSVP to a meeting, you may post your question in the event comments section below. I'll send out a survey for voting a few days prior to the meetup. We discuss two questions each night. So you will get to cast two votes in the survey. When we meet, we break into smaller groups of five to seven to discuss the top two vote-getters. Each group discusses one question for around 45-50 minutes, and we then take a short break. After reconvening, each group moves on to its second question. Hope to see you there! -Brian

Contra dance with Big Scioty May 2 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
Contra dance with Big Scioty May 2 - Clinton Heights Lutheran church
**Caller: Richard Ades** **Band: The McKenzies** **Clinton Heights Lutheran Church** **15 Clinton Heights Ave, Columbus, OH 43202** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle.

We use a specific set of rules and equipment to make the games run better and keep them fun for everybody, not just people who already know how to play. If it rains, the event will be canceled.
