Free Learn to Skate Clinic Session
Free Learn to Skate Clinic Session
We'll be offering a Free Learn to Skate Clinic 10am Saturday next to the Carter Barron Amphitheatre parking lot in Rock Creek Park. We'll cover everything you need to start skating outdoors. Inline and roller skaters welcome; protective gear required (check our meetup group description for details). We have loaner skates and protective gear available. If you need to borrow gear, please contact us at least a couple of days in advance of this session so we'll know to bring it for you. If you need skates, please specify roller skates or inlines and also men's or women's sizes. A note on our start time: * Please be there by 930am if you plan to borrow gear so you have enough time to try things on and make sure everything fits. * Please be there by 945am if you have your own gear so you have enough time to put it on. * The clinic starts promptly at 10am; if you're not geared up and ready when we start, it'll be hard to include you in the session.
Hike: Sunset Rocks and Pine Grove Furnace State Park, PA
Hike: Sunset Rocks and Pine Grove Furnace State Park, PA
**PATC Map 2-3 / MD Bus** *$36. Long hike: 10½ mi., 1300 ft. elevation gain. Moderate hike: 8½ mi., 800 ft. elevation gain. The Sunset Rocks option does not add any distance, but it entails an additional gain of 1000 ft.* The Appalachian Trail at its midpoint in southern Pennsylvania is gently undulating, passing through an area that still contains remains of artifacts of the state’s iron foundry industry. All hikers begin from Shippensburg Rd. and go to Dead Woman’s Hollow. Moderate hikers continue on the AT, while long hikers go along Dead Woman’s Hollow Road and the Blueberry Trail before rejoining the AT. All hikers proceed to the junction with the Sunset Rocks Trail, where there is an option to take the Sunset Rocks Trail for a viewpoint and a challenging rock scramble. Hikers continue to Pine Grove Furnace and then take a brief road walk that passes the AT Museum to the parking area at Fuller Lake. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- RESERVATIONS Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited on all trips. Reservations are accepted as late as Friday, but reserving before Wednesday night helps ensure your spot and prevent cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups. RSVP through Meetup and pay through PayPal. Please be sure your RSVP gives your full name and phone number and where you'll be boarding the bus. We don't want to leave you behind! Because this is a paid event, we cannot offer a waitlist should the hike fill up. If spots subsequently open up, they will become immediately available to anyone and everyone. FIRST-TIME HIKERS If you're a first-time hiker with us, please notify the leaders in advance so they can make sure you have the info you need. Hikers must be able to keep at least a 2 mph pace. Three Waterfalls near Big Meadows
Three Waterfalls near Big Meadows
Adventurers! Get ready for a waterfall filled hike in the Big Meadows section of Shenandoah National Park. We will visit Dark Hollow Falls, Rose River Falls and Lewis Falls, giving us a total of 218 ft (!!) of waterfalls, and a great excuse to Dynamically Lollygag™. As usual, expect rocky and possibly muddy trails as we traverse 8 miles and gain 2100 ft total elevation. This easy side of strenuous hike is the fourth in a series to visit all the named waterfalls in Shenandoah NP. You will need to bring at least 3 liters of your favorite hydration beverage, plus sturdy boots and bug spray. Also bring a bag lunch and enough for snacking during the day. (You will have an opportunity to buy these at our usual Sheetz stop on the way to the trailhead.) Plan for a meal stop on the drive back. (I will poll the attendees after the hike to see if we also crave the Blackberry Ice Cream at Big Meadows Lodge, or even its famous Mile-High Blackberry Ice Cream Pie.) We may return as late as 9 p.m. Costs of this outing include your $5 Adventuring fee, plus $20 for your driver and your cost for a light dinner. Meet by 8:30 a.m. to form carpools in the East Falls Church Metro Kiss & Ride lot; please answer the RSVP questions, so the trip leader can organize the carpool. Failure to answer may result in your reservation being removed. We will depart promptly. Also, contact the trip leader if you prefer to meet at the trailhead. This is a challenging hike, so please be aerobically fit. Also, if your plans change, make sure to reverse your RSVP status ASAP. Otherwise, you may be marked as a no-show. IMPORTANT NOTE: When you RSVP to an event, you affirm that you have read and agree to the terms of the release. Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Café Rockville Meetup
Socrates Café meets twice a month. Though this may be considered a "philosophical" group, there are no rules as to what is discussed. Usually, the topics revolve around social concerns, morality, and the first principles of things. Prior to each meeting we vote online for the questions we will discuss. That way, we will have enough time to ruminate on them and have more in-depth conversations. If you RSVP to a meeting, you may post your question in the event comments section below. I'll send out a survey for voting a few days prior to the meetup. We discuss two questions each night. So you will get to cast two votes in the survey. When we meet, we break into smaller groups of five to seven to discuss the top two vote-getters. Each group discusses one question for around 45-50 minutes, and we then take a short break. After reconvening, each group moves on to its second question. Hope to see you there! -Brian

Rockville Drawing and Coffee Weekly Session - NOTE: PLEASE use RSVP process!
Rockville Drawing and Coffee Weekly Session - NOTE: PLEASE use RSVP process!
Expect a fun afternoon of drawing and socializing with like-minded artists! Although each Session is 3 hours, feel free to drop in as your schedule permits. This is a casual gathering, and we know that people might only be able to stay a little while -- drop in, and stay, as long as you are having fun, and as your day allows. **Note: about RSVP's, please respect the RSVP process. If you RSVP YES, you are commited and we are all looking to seeing you. If your plans change however, that's OK, but please be courteous and change your RSVP to NO. We are reaching the headcount limit regularly now and it is rude to take a spot and not relinquish it if your plans change... Respect others; don't be rude. Thank you for your cooperation**. All skill levels are welcome -- this is not a competition. This Group and all its Events are intended to be in equal parts, Drawing/Art AND Socializing. As such, conversation is expected and encouraged. ***However, in all cases, please refrain from discussion of Political topics.*** Our goal is enjoyment, in the form of drawing together while socializing, and political conversation is too polarizing for that to happen. We are looking forward to seeing you there! **Note (in parting): Be aware, and keep in mind that our group, meeting as it does at Starbucks, depends on this business's generosity for the space it allows us. As such, please make a point of purchasing something from the business to express our appreciation as a group using their facility. If you are experiencing hardship and can't afford a modest purchase, get my attention discreetly, and arrangements will be made with no judgment whatsoever. Thank you for your understanding... Sunday Skate Rock Creek Park!
Sunday Skate Rock Creek Park!
**Ready for a beautiful Sunday morning skate through some of the best greenery DC has to offer?** This weekend, we are taking on a stunning route up through **Rock Creek Park** all the way to the DC/Maryland border! Whether you want to challenge yourself with the full mileage or you're just looking for a peaceful, paved escape from city traffic, this route has it all. Plus, **Big Mike** is stepping up to lead the pack! 🙌 Here is the game plan: ### ⏱️ The Schedule * **Meetup:** 10:00 AM @ **Pershing Park** (Located right at the corner of **14th St and Pennsylvania Ave NW**—we are meeting here since Freedom Plaza is still closed!) * **Rollout:** 10:10 AM sharp! ### 🗺️ The Route & Mileage * **Full Distance:** \~18.67 miles total (out-and-back). * **Route Map:** [https://onthegomap.com/s/peun02rk](https://onthegomap.com/s/peun02rk) * **Choose Your Own Adventure:** As always, if you want a shorter skate, you are welcome to turn around at any point along the trail, head back at your own pace, or wait for the crew to loop back down! ### 📍 How It Works 1. **The Launch:** We’ll drop in at Pershing Park and head right up **Pennsylvania Avenue** to catch the entrance to the trail. 2. **The Climb:** From there, we jump onto the beautiful **Rock Creek Trail**, skating deep into the park alongside the water. 3. **The Stretch:** We’ll transition onto **Beach Drive** for an incredible stretch almost all the way up to the DC/Maryland boundary. Best of all, **Beach Drive is completely closed to automobiles on Sundays**, so we'll have wide-open pavement to cruise! 🚙❌ 4. **The Finish:** After hitting the turnaround point, we’ll enjoy a smooth, familiar roll all the way back down to finish up right where we started at Pershing Park. ### 🎒 What to Bring * **Protective Gear:** Helmets are highly recommended, plus wrist guards and pads. * **Hydration:** It's an 18+ mile journey—make sure to bring plenty of water and maybe a quick snack for the turnaround point! * **Good Vibes:** Let's make it a fantastic Sunday morning session. RSVP so we know who to look out for, and we’ll see you at the corner of 14th & Penn at 10:00 AM! 🛑🛼🚀 For up to the minute details, check Facebook and Instagram.
