Visual Fields Keynote — Between Humans & Machines: Meaning Through Digital Craft
Visual Fields Keynote — Between Humans & Machines: Meaning Through Digital Craft
**When machines can make almost anything, where does meaning come from - and what is left for humans to do?** In an age of endless AI output, the challenge is no longer producing more, but making meaning. As automation reshapes visual culture, the role of artists and designers is being redefined. In this keynote, the Zürich-based Machine Arts Group, with **Sofie Mart** and **Armin Aschenbrenner**, explores digital craft as a practice between humans and machines. Working at the intersection of digital craft, embodied AI, robotics, and human-machine collaboration, they draw on hands-on experimentation with intelligent systems and physical materials. Making is framed as a conversational process, where the gap between code and material becomes a creative space for meaning. Their keynote reimagines machines not just as tools, but as collaborators and performers, and argues for hands-on, DIY approaches to digital technologies as a way to move beyond the AI hype and rediscover more meaningful ways of making. Join us on **January 20** as they explore how meaning emerges between humans and machines. **💡 What will you learn?** * Why making meaning matters more than producing more. * How digital craft becomes a conversation between humans, machines, and materials. * Why the gap between code and material is a creative opportunity. * How hands-on, DIY practices help artists reclaim capacity to act in the age of AI. *About the Machine Arts Group* [www.machinearts.group](https://machinearts.group/) *Connect with Sofie* [LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/sofie-mart/) · [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/sofiem.art/) *Connect with Armin* [LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/in/aschenbrennera/) · [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/armin.aschenbrenner/) —— **📍 Where?** [Kulturhaus Helferei](https://maps.app.goo.gl/AJuPTcLTmihXxHyn9), near the Grossmünster in Niederdorf. \> Kirchgasse 13\, 8001 Zürich (Tram-Station Helmhaus) **📅 When?** Tuesday, January 20, 6:30 PM / 18:30 Uhr **⏰ What’s the schedule?** 6:30 PM → Doors open 6:45 PM → Keynote + Q&A 7:30 PM → Networking 🔗 **Discord link** Get event reminders and connect with other members on Discord: ➡️ [discord.gg/PAyRBDhKkk](https://discord.gg/PAyRBDhKkk) —— **Who’s Visual Fields?** Visual Fields is a network of designers and creatives built for people to connect, support, and share with fellow experts. An Evening with Live Music: Metropolis (1927)
An Evening with Live Music: Metropolis (1927)
*With live music by the Rotterdam Kinematic Ensemble (NL) and the Ensemble Batida (CH).* In the 21st-century, *Metropolis* is a gigantic city sharply divided between the thinkers (wealthy industrialists and the finance elite), who live in opulent towers above ground, and the working class, who toil endlessly in the dangerous factories far below. The story follows Freder (Gustav Fröhlich), the son of the city's master Joh Fredersen, who falls in love with Maria (Brigitte Helm), a charismatic worker and prophet who preaches hope and peace between the classes. When Freder’s father (Alfred Abel) tries to crush the workers' rebellion using a malevolent, robotic double of Maria, the clash between humanity and technology threatens to destroy the entire city. This silent masterpiece explores timeless themes of class conflict, industrial exploitation, and the dehumanization of workers by technology. An apèro will be held after the function. Directed by Fritz Lang *(Woman in the Moon, Die Nibelungen)*. Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program: Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there! Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Software ate the world, Agents are eating Software Engineering
Software ate the world, Agents are eating Software Engineering
2026 may be the last year many developers write code by hand. We need coding agents to solve complex problems in production codebases, but vibe coding alone won’t get us there. Vibe coding is all gas, no brakes. It burns up the context window until the agent slips on its own slop. You can go fast at first, but the more you stuff into the context window, the more tangled its outputs get. While the industry is rapidly increasing code generation speed, we still have to understand, review, merge, and maintain what gets shipped. This talk featuring Michael Geiger will outline how coding agents (Claude Code + Gas Town) work and a framework for orchestrating them to solve complicated problems in complex codebases. It’s about steering the model: doing the research to align intent, planning the approach up front, implementing in parallel steps, and breaking early. Human judgment still matters, but it should be spent on high-leverage decisions: what to build, what to forbid, and “what is quality?”, not cleaning up slop. Attendees will leave with a checklist to identify workflow and environment gaps that hold agents back, so you and your team can ship higher-quality software starting tomorrow.
