Meditation and Discussion Group: The Laws of the Universe
Join Stephen Fiyalko, President of the Melbourne Theosophical Society for meditation, self attunement, study and discussion on the Laws of the Universe.
We welcome all to join at 5:30pm for a 30 min Meditation and will begin the discussion group at 6:00pm. For those who prefer to just attend the discussion group you're welcome to arrive at 6pm.
An understanding of and action within the Laws through our choices give practical tools for facing, managing and surmounting with confidence the many challenges we face in our daily lives, in society and the world itself. Ignorance of the Laws can leave us adrift to be buffeted and feel overwhelmed by stormy seas.
Each week will look at one of the twelve Laws which are principles, not rules, seeking a deeper understanding of that Law, our and their inter-relationship with the other Laws.
Discussion will involve sharing stories from our lives which contribute to a growing understanding and confidence in our lives.
Each session is free, but donations are welcome.

đ Our events are only open to people aged 18 and older.
đą No advertising â Please donât promote other events, groups, or businesses here.
đ
Donât be clingy â Give people space to mingle and chat with others too.
đ No carpooling â For safety reasons and insurance coverage, we donât allow carpooling or ride-sharing through the group.
đ° No sales pitches â That means no selling, MLMs, pyramid schemes, or âlife-changing mentorships.â Keep it scam-free.
By joining an event, you agree to follow these rules. Breaking them means removal from all our groupsâno exceptions. Thank you!

Introduction to Curative Eurythmy: A Three-Session Experience
Join us for a unique workshop hosted by Jenny Kuznetsova on Curative Eurythmy: Movement for everyday wellbeing, an introduction.
Held over three consecutive Saturdays, 14th, 21st, 28th March 2026, 11am-12pm, the participants will have an opportunity to experience this extraordinary modality.
Curative Eurythmy is a movement modality that creates harmony in the whole being. Through specifically curated movements, our three bodies, physical, emotional and mental are moved into incredible balance.
The movements work strongly on the circulatory system and as such create organic deep activation of the breath. As the movements activate circulation in the body as well as flooding it with the health giving breath, the after effects create feelings of inner nourishment, strength and vitality.
Curative Eurythmy is able to help with physical, emotional and mental imbalances as well as provide a general boost to our overall wellbeing that is so vital in an age where the nervous system is constantly overwhelmed with the pace of life.
You are invited to try this unique and potent modality and experience the benefits firsthand.

Philosophy Roundtable: Can a secular society replace the functions of religion?
Please join us this Sunday as we discuss if a secular society can replace the functions of religion (or spirituality), and what this may mean for our lives. We will look at this at both the social and individual level.
**We will meet at the Queensberry Hotel, 593 Swanston Street, Carlton (100m north of previous location) at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp.**
**We kindly ask attendees to pay $5 to attend to help with MeetUp costs & venue costs. This is not mandatory, but if you are a regular member it would be appreciated. Any extra moneys will go towards buying food and drinks for the table. The venue also expects us to spend money as a group, so grateful if everyone could buy a drink from the venue.**
There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged.
Find below some questions to consider, however these are free-ranging events and the below serve as a springboard for the discussion:
**What might religion offer?**
\- Meaning and existential orientation
\- Moral formation
\- Community and belonging
\- Ritual and shared identity
\- Authority and moral limits
**Is religion needed?**
\- Are some countries \(perhaps Australia\, perhaps the Nordic countries\) doing well with a secular society?
\- Are they living off the moral inheritance of Christianity? If so\, how long will it last?
\- Do we create quasi\-religions instead\, such as nationalism?
\- If religion provides useful functions\, can we just replace them with something else?
\- Does this question look different elsewhere\, such as in East Asian societies\.
**Philosophers to draw upon**
\- religion as social glue \(Durkheim\, Tocqueville\, Haidt\)
\- religion as psychological response \(Hume\, James\)
\- religion as declining foundation of morality \(Nietzsche\, MacIntrye\, Dostoevsky\)
\- religion as historical force shaping society \(Weber\, Marx\)
\- religion as replaceable or reformable \(Mill\, Comte\, Kant\)
Hope to see you there!
The best and worst of Colonialism and post-Colonialism theory
## **DISCUSSION: definitions**
**1\. Colonialism: definition**
**Video = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOOpBnCSdps**
**[âWhat is Colonialism?â | Douglas Murray](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOOpBnCSdps) \| 1 minute**
**A Definition**
"Western colonialism, a political-economic phenomenon whereby various European nations explored, conquered, settled, and exploited large areas of the world." (âWestern colonialismâ Britannica, https://www.britannica.com/topic/Western-colonialism)
**2\. Decolonisation : definition**
**Video= https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_32LJcvQc0**
**[âWhat is Decolonization?â | Helpful Professor Explains](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_32LJcvQc0) \| 3 minute**
**A Definition**
"While decolonisation has acquired an obvious importance in our times, it is not however a new phenomenon. In the past it had profound effects on the world's political structure. This was certainly the case with the revolutionary decolonisation which gave birth to the United States in the second half of the 18th century and the Latin American States in the first half of the 19th century; likewise with the progressive, peaceful emancipation of the British dominions over the best part of a hundred years.â
(âFactors of Decolonisationâ by F. Van Langenhove *Civilisations*, Vol. 11, No. 4 (1961), pp. 401-428 https://www.jstor.org/stable/41378282)
**3\. Anti\-Colonialism / postcolonialism : definition**
**Video=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d92dN8EoAbc**
**[âColonial Discourse: Postcolonial Theory concepts | Postcolonialismâ | Dr. Masood Raja](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d92dN8EoAbc) \| 0:00\-5:00**
**A Definition**
"The power to narrate, or to block other narratives from forming and emerging, is very important to culture and imperialism, and constitutes one of the main connections between them."
â Edward Said, Culture and Imperialism (1993)
## **DISCUSSION: case-studies**
**1\. Colonisation and de\-colonisation : "Mad dogs and Englishman go out in the midday sun"**

**2 Anti-Colonialism / postcolonialism as a political (& interpretive?) paradigm**
| **Oppressed / Oppressor** | **Narrative / Discourse** | **Edward Said âOrientalismâ** |
| ---------------------- | ---------------------- | ------------------------- |

|
*"The Orient was almost a European invention, and had been since antiquity a place of romance, exotic beings, haunting memories and landscapes, remarkable experiences. . . . The Orient is not only adjacent to Europe; it is also the place of Europeâs greatest and richest and oldest colonies, the source of its civilizations and languages, its cultural contestant, and one of its deepest and most recurring images of the Other." Orientalism by Edward Said (1978)*
**3\. Bible Translation vs Theological Syncretism**
"The translation of the Bible was not just a literary exercise; it was an act of cultural empowerment. By adopting the mother tongue, the translator was saying that the culture of the people was a worthy vessel for the divine word. It gave people a sense of their own dignity and worth in the eyes of God." â Lamin Sanneh, Translating the Message (1989)
**vs**
"The danger of syncretism is not just that it introduces 'foreign' elements into the faith, but that it allows the 'world' to provide the framework, while the gospel is merely used to fill in the gaps. In syncretism, the gospel loses its power to challenge the culture because it has become a prisoner of the culture." â Lesslie Newbigin, The Gospel in a Pluralist Society (1989)

Forum for Conscious Dialogue
**Join us for an open Forum of reflection and shared inquiry.**
Bring a topic, a question, or simply your curiosity. Our focus is Theosophy and the spiritual journey â the many ways we seek, grow, and wonder together.
We invite you to come with an open mind, a willingness to listen, and a respect for the diverse perspectives that enrich our path. As Socrates reminds us, *âwisdom begins with wonder,â* and in that spirit, we welcome questions that lead to more questions, insights that open new doors, and reflections that deepen our understanding.
Throughout the afternoon, weâll pause with selected quotations from the Masters â brief touchstones for contemplation and dialogue.
All are welcome.
We offer a safe, respectful space for thoughtful conversation and inner exploration.

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association:
They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other churchâstate issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEAâs early wins and hard lessons, what weâre seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape â and practical ways to get involved.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

In Person Event: The Secrets to Mental Health
Mental Health, how do you understand it? How can you improve it?
How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself.
Have you ever suffered from a traumatic experience, a deep loss or been through a painful breakup? Has your ability to communicate suffered as a result? And after that, even though you "moved on" did you find that things were never quite the same? Have you ever looked at childhood photos, or reminisced your early life and wondered where that happiness and spark went?
Are your emotions out of your own control? Have you ever felt, even if you arenât aware of it, that possibly you are getting in your own way of your happiness and success? How does this affect your self-confidence?
Find out what is at the root of all stress, anxiety, depression and self-doubt. Find out how and why you hold yourself back from achieving your goals and having the life you have dreamed of. As soon as you learn what is at the root of these unwanted conditions, youâll see it is something you can DO something about. You will not be labeled or categorized at this MeetUp.
This group is hosted by the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.

Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup (4th Tues)

This group has been meeting every Tuesday evening for over a decade. Many attendees do not RSVP on meetup. Please don't let the small number here discourage you. Anyone/everyone is welcome to come. We'd love to have you join us.
COTA bus #5 comes to W. 5th and Wyandotte Rd. And it's a minute walk to the restaurant.
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above.
There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change.
The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/).
Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers.
For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
