Truer than the truth: how to use figurative language

At its simplest, figurative language is a way of saying that one thing is (like) another thing. It is saying that X is Y by comparing them both to Z. By using figures like metaphors, similes and even personification, we express an idea with playfulness and wonder, while at the same time attempting to get as close as possible to its core truth.

This workshop is intended not just for poets and writers, but anyone who would like to test and widen their linguistic horizons. Nowadays, when the quantity of written content is overproduced, but its quality is diminished, the workshop provides an opportunity to approach one's expression with freshness and innate curiosity.
We will look at how different figures appear in poetry, prose and everyday language, engage in interactive exercises and immediately apply the newly-acquired skills in free writing. The workshop is aimed at native and near-native English speakers.

Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.

OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 12:15. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.

. Find us on Facebook to see what's actually happening. Bring your own knitting or crochet project and join other people who enjoy yarn crafts for a relaxing couple of hours on Saturday afternoons.
The 1st Saturday of the month is not an in-person meet-up, but on zoom. All people and all levels welcome, including beginners, whom we are happy to help get started (although we don't run classes). No charge. All you need is some yarn and a crochet hook or a pair of knitting needles. We are very friendly so don't be shy. The venue may change from time to time so please check back on the day before the event to be sure you have it right. We mostly speak English, but people in the group are very international and speak many languages. Looking forward to seeing you.

Before we launch a full series of dating experiences, we'd like to test interest in a concept that we believe is much more natural, fun, and meaningful than traditional speed dating.
## Why Sushi?
Let's be honest...
Traditional singles events can feel a little artificial.
You sit across from someone, ask the same questions over and over again..
Instead, what if people could meet while doing something together?
Making sushi is the perfect activity because it is collaborative, social, fun, and allows participants to naturally rotate and interact with different people throughout the evening.
Rather than interviewing each other, you'll be:

đŁ Meeting multiple people throughout the evening

Sometimes the best connections happen when you're focused on an experience rather than trying to impress someone. And if you don't meet anyone , you've learned a new skill.

2nd Photolanguage Gathering (Walk and Talk)
If you're tired of small talk, tired of discussing hobbies and politics, and if there's something telling you there's more to share and more to observe... Please join us :)
For our second event, weâre going to make the most out of this beautiful weather (again) and gather in the heart of the ForĂȘt de Soignes.
Weâll meet at the Quatre Bras (Vier Armen) tram stop and walk together towards a bench in the forest (about a 45-minute walk). The walk is part of the experience, a chance to slow down, breathe, and let the forest help us unwind before we begin. Once we arrive, weâll start the meeting.
Iâll share a selection of photos with the group (and youâre very welcome to bring one of your own). The photos are simply there to gently spark memories and stories that may be waiting to be expressed. From there, weâll move into a session of speaking and active listening, with no interruptions.
Iâll explain the structure more clearly once weâre together. For now, here are the main things to keep in mind:
â Please listen to others without interrupting. Letâs create a space that feels kind and respectful.
â Come with an open heart and a willingness to share something youâve experienced, even if youâre not quite sure what that is yet (thatâs what the photos are for). Your story doesnât have to be deep, this isnât a storytelling performance. What matters most is that youâre genuine. And if something deep wants to be shared, thatâs very welcome too.
â If at any point you feel uncomfortable, you donât have to speak. Thereâs no pressure.
â Youâre welcome to bring something to drink, but no food please, this helps us keep a calm and attentive atmosphere while others are sharing.
â Please try to be on time, as we wonât be able to wait once we start walking. If youâre running late, just send me a message via Meetup and Iâll share the exact location of the bench so you can join us there.
â This is our first event, so weâre doing our best to keep it organized while still allowing space for spontaneity.
Looking forward to sharing this first gathering with you. Hopefully, this will be a time of real human connection!

This Sunday we shall walk along some of the Lambiekwandeling in the Dworp , Beersel , Alsemberg area.
The walk should look something like :

Bread Baking in traditional wood-fired oven: Dive into Traditional Bread Making
### The Community Oven
Join us for a delightful afternoon of traditional bread baking at Brussels Traditional Bread Cooking Meetup (FHTM-WSL).
This is an opportunity to reconnect with an ancient tradition: participants prepare their bread at home and come to bake it in the community oven at 17:00. A heated proofing cabinet is available to hold the dough before baking.
Baking is done at 17:00 by the organizers due to the risk of burns and the skill, speed, and dexterity required. Baking takes approximately 40 minutes.
The bakery becomes a lively and dynamic place for exchanges between participants!
Baking sessions take place one Sunday per month throughout the year.
Don't forget tot put your dough into a towel with flower.

**Join us for Soul Coffee, an informal gathering where we can connect a bit deeper, check in on each other, and share some real soul conversation together - as always, across beliefs and traditions.**
Soul Coffee is a gathering by BreadBreakers, a community for people of all stripes to build meaningful relationships and have curious conversations.
**Our mission in BreadBreakers is to be a place of compassion and belonging in a time of division and isolation; to rebuild the town square, one table at a time.**
Usually we do this by breaking bread and having facilitated conversations over dinner, but sometimes it's good to just meet over coffee and spend some unstructured time talking about the deep stuff. At each Soul Coffee, we'll keep it simple and talk about three questions:
- How's your soul doing?
- How have you experienced wonder lately?
- What do you need right now?
No matter your religion, or if you even are religious; no matter where you are spiritually; no matter if you even think souls exist - come to be seen and known, to just be humans together in a crazy world, to talk about those things of the spirit that are so central to the human experience but rarely get discussed.

BreadBreakers, an initiative by[ Restoration United Methodist Churc](https://restorationreston.org/breadbreakers)h in Reston, VA, is a religiously inclusive community, a collaboration between the church and those of all different beliefs. All faiths and all stripes are welcomed. Our leadership, volunteer team, and community include people who attend Restoration and people who don't.
Mt Kilimanjaro Trek! One of the 7 Summits. Join us on this bucket list adventure
**Our Meetup is off to another hiking adventure! Mt Kilimanjaro, as the tallest mountain in Africa, is included in the 7 Summits of the world.**
**It is a bucket-list item for all hard-core hikers and mountain lovers.**
We did this trek with Meetup in the summer of 2024 and it was a true experience of a lifetime (see photos below)
Let's get to some numbers. It is 5,895m/19,340ft
BUT . . . our starting elevation for the trek is 3795m/12541ft
As such elevation gain is 2100m/6799ft
To compare Everest Base Camp trek, is about 2754m/9035ft elevation change. And Mt Whitney is about 1828m/6000ft elevation change.
The key to being able to succeed in this endeavor lays in the route and the support system.
We are taking the Lemosho Route via the Northern Circuit. The Northern Circuit route is the longest and newest of the seven established Kilimanjaro routes. It's one of the best routes because it has the best acclimatization profile. This results in one of the highest summit success rates. Add to that stunning views, and comparatively relaxed pace. It is also much less crowded than the other Kilimanjaro routes.
As far as our support system: We will be accompanied by experienced guides, porters and cooks. They are certified, ensuring our safety and comfort. Porters will carry our gear.
We will have a high ratio of guides to hikers. Our guides will go our pace and support each and everyone of us, regardless of fitness level and pace. In other words...you go your own speed and we all get there safe.

As with all our international trips, we picked the best season/time of year to go for weather and wildlife. Lemosho and Northern Circuit is a scenically spectacular and varied route. At the lower elevations it has an abundance of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, eland and lion which come over to forage during dry season.
**Each of our trips is personally crafted to offer the best places and best use of time.**
*But I don't have the needed gear?!*
You don't need much more than the standard trekker's equipment. We will provide you with a list of what is already included and what can be rented there.
*Does this include food?*
All meals on the trek potion are included and a cook travels with us!
*What is lodging like?*
We are sleeping in new and comfortable tents (carried during the day by porters)
*I am new at this.*
That's OK. We do plenty of prep Zooms before we depart. And in California we have a number of local outdoor day or weekend outings you can test out with us.
*How dangerous is this? What if I get sick or hurt?*
We will be walking on an established, well used trail the entire time. **Our trip INCLUDES emergency insurance.** We are also Certified Wilderness First Responders and our guides are members of (AMREF) Flying Doctor.
