Manassas Gap via AT 5 Mi 1055 Ft Moderate Hike

Join me on this moderate to moderately strenuous hike that ventures into the G.R. Thompson Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Linden, VA. We will hike on the Appalachian Trail and turn around after a break at the Manassas Gap Shelter. With a steady climb at the beginning of the hike, we'll get a good workout with over 1,000 feet of elevation gain in the first two miles. No WMA access permit is needed because we don't leave the AT. There is an intermittent stream crossing, typically an easy rock hop when water is present. We typically hike about 2 mph. However, we leave no one behind and will move at a pace that is comfortable for all.
NOTE: I will be carrying a bag to gather any litter near the shelter and its access trail, which I maintain. Join me if you wish. If there is hiker interest, I can demonstate how to hang a food bag on the shelterâs bear pole and/or answer questions about trail maintenance.

**Meeting Location/Parking:** The AT trailhead and parking area is located on VA725/Tucker Lane in Linden, VA. GPS: 38.91146, -78.05289
**Facilities:** No restroom is available at the trailhead; however, the Manassas Gap Shelter has an outdoor privy.
**Admission:** Free

**History of Manassas Gap Shelter:** Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps around 1933, just north of Linden, Virginia. Like many shelters along the Trail, the Manassas Gap Shelter resided on private land for many decades. Built from chestnut logs, the shelter is a simple lean-to with three walls. Until the 1980s, there were also bunks across the back of the structure, but these were removed in the 1980s during a restoration of the shelter brought on by a severe infestation of mice and field rats. A spring is just downslope from the shelter.
Science Happy Hour
Join us before the lecture for a casual get together to mingle and chat about science! You can get excited about the lecture, talk about previous lectures, indulge in completely unrelated science, whatever tickles your fancy!
We'll hang out at The Board Room for about an hour and a half then make our way to the Powell Auditorium. There's no kitchen at the Board Room, so feel free to bring any snacks or dinner with you! There are, of course, drinks available. As this is a bar, this will be a 21+ unofficial gathering.

Well since no one else will make a Heated Rivalry Book Club, I guess itâs up to me! Join us to discuss the first book in the âGame Changersâ series at Petit Monde Cafe (located at 2653 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008) on Saturday, February 7th.
SCPRO Winter Potluck Party
Help us celebrate the **Sierra Clubâs Potomac Region Outings** **(SCPRO)** and usher in a new year of outdoor activities by joining us at this (indoor) winter potluck party. The party is open to allâoutings participants (past, current, or future) and leaders (past, current, or future), as well family, friends, and curious onlookersâso feel free to invite others.
Special guests are our long-term leaders whom we recognize with sincere appreciation for their volunteer service to the Club. They have helped introduce thousands of people to the outdoors and then helped them enjoy it for many more years!

Trek Around Old Town, Alexandria, VA (ODH Training Hike #5)
This is a substitute hike for the one originally scheduled for Indian Head Rail Trail on Saturday. The location was changed due to icy trail conditions at Indian Head and was rescheduled due to severe wind chills forecast for Saturday. The conditions for Sunday, Feb. 8 are better, though far from ideal. Winds will be from the northwest at about 15-25 miles per hour. The temperature will start out around 17 degrees Fahrenheit (about 2 degrees F wind chill) and gradually rise to about 22 degrees F (about 10 degrees F wind chill). Therefore, you must dress in multiple layers (avoiding pure cotton next to the skin), have winter head and ear coverings, and winter mittens or gloves. Youâll need to show these items to a leader before signing the waiver form and in order to participate. A winter scarf is also recommended to partially cover your face. The reason for layers is that the air between them provides extra insulation and you can remove some layers if needed to prevent overheating during exercise; the idea is to retain warmth with minimal sweating. Bring water and snacks as there will be no organized lunch stop. No pets please.
Weâll meet at the Braddock Road Metro station by 10:00 AM Sunday. We urge you to take Metro rather than driving because finding a legal parking spot is difficult. We should meet in the vicinity of bus bay E just outside the Metro station. To simplify registration, weâre waiving collection of donations for this event.
The route will be about 6 miles along city sidewalks and trails that have been sufficiently cleared of snow and ice, with very few exceptions. Two public restroom locations are available, one at about the 2.2-mile mark, and one at about the 4.9-mile mark, but there are a number of businesses along the way where you can use their restrooms if you buy something there. King Street Metro station is an optional bail-out point at 4.8 miles. The hike ends back at Braddock Road Metro.
Paper handouts of the route will be available at the start, so please change your RSVP if you decide not to attend.
Execution of a Sierra Club liability waiver is required at the start.

VSDC Animal Rights Discussion and Education Group

The next event will be the third and final event in our series on Theories of Change in the Animal Rights movement. We will apply theory to practice and discuss the campaign to prohibit the sale of foie gras in DC through a ballot initiative. We are excited to welcome a speaker who is on the forefront of this effort and to hear from them firsthand how this initiative fits into their organizationâs theory of change! Afterwards, we hope youâll join us for dinner at DC Vegan.
**What is the Animal Rights Discussion and Education Group?*
If youâve been looking for a way to educate yourself on animal rights and issues affecting animals in our world today with the support of a like-minded community, then this group is for you. The VSDC Animal Rights Discussion and Education Group will discuss thoughts, questions, concerns, and news related to animal rights. It seeks to provide a safe space for discussions around issues affecting captive animals, farmed animals, animals used in research, wild animals, companion animals, and more.
All are welcome, from those well-versed in animal rights philosophy and issues to those who are just starting off on their journey and are curious to learn more. Please come with an open mind, an open heart, and a willingness to engage with diverse opinions with curiosity and respect.
The plan is for the group to meet every month, alternating between Zoom and in person. The topic of each meeting and any accompanying materials will be planned in advance and posted in event announcements via this VSDC meetup group. Guest Speaker: Susan Prolman, Activism for Animals

Susan Prolman is a lifelong advocate for animals. Susan served as Executive Director of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and as Director of International Campaigns for The Humane Society of the United States (now called Humane World for Animals). She lobbied against factory farming and for environmental protection for years. While a Georgetown University law student, she helped to create the school's first animal law course. Susan leads Activism for Animals, which shares ideas for creative, positive, everyday actions individuals can take to spread animal rights messages in their communities.
Join your fellow animal lovers and DC Animal Protection to discuss whatâs happening in the animal advocacy scene in DC! This series is a weekly meetup, with guest speakers from all of the major animals rights orgs. Weâll host non-profits such as Pro-Animal Future, International Council for Animal Welfare, DC Voters for Animals, The Humane League, Mercy for Animals and Direct Action Everywhere as well as local grassroots groups like the DC Coalition Against Foie Gras and sanctuaries. Weâll also have special sessions related to health, nutrition and mindfulness!
We encourage anyone who is interested in helping animals to attend- no need to be vegan! Come learn about our rich variety of local activism. **First Gathering: Love as Transformation**
Reading: **The Forty Rules of Love** by **Elif Shafak**
We begin Men, Meaning, and Madness with a novel that treats love not as sentiment, but as a force that disrupts, humbles, and reshapes the self.
The Forty Rules of Love explores love as discipline, surrender, and moral risk. It asks what happens when certainty breaks, when the ego is wounded, and when meaning is found not through control, but through transformation.
This gathering is for men interested in serious literature and honest inquiry into how love shapes character, responsibility, and the inner life.
Discussion will be guided by questions rather than summaries. The aim is depth, not debate.
Come having read the book or engaged with it seriously.
Humanist Community Celebrating Darwin Day
Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.

Bad Girls Book Club February 2026
**Our February novel is: Julia by Sandra Newman**

Julia Worthing is a mechanic, working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. Itâs 1984, and Britain (now called Airstrip One) has long been absorbed into the larger trans-Atlantic nation of Oceania. Oceania has been at war for as long as anyone can remember, and is ruled by an ultra-totalitarian Party, whose leader is a quasi-mythical figure called Big Brother. In short, everything about this world is as it is in Orwellâs 1984.
All her life, Julia has known only Oceania, and, until she meets Winston Smith, she has never imagined anything else. She is an ideal citizen: cheerfully cynical, always ready with a bribe, piously repeating every political slogan while believing in nothing. She routinely breaks the rules, but also collaborates with the regime when necessary. Everyone likes Julia.
Then one day she finds herself walking toward Winston Smith in a corridor and impulsively slips him a note, setting in motion the devastating, unforgettable events of the classic story. Julia takes us on a surprising journey through Orwellâs now-iconic dystopia, with twists that reveal unexpected sides not only to Julia, but to other familiar figures in the 1984 universe. This unique perspective lays bare our own world in haunting and provocative ways, just as the original did almost seventy-five years ago.

Powell Gold Star Referral Club Meetup
We meet at lunch each week and each meeting follows a fairly organized agenda. First all participants pass their business cards around. Then each member and guest is invited to give a one-minute overview of their company and what is a perfect referral for the week.
