With the promise of a freezing morning, yes -3°C!, let's go for a sunny medium length hike of 14+ km, starting from the gates of the Africa museum, ending in the same spot, but not before we hike through the Northern part of Tervuren through agriland and forestparkland towards Vossem, coming back by following a brook upstream to moments later walk on the banks of partially frozen lakes thus providing for idyllic views. Whilst wandering through the park we return to the gates. The nice cafetaria nearby these gates will be closed so bring your own hot chocolate drink! I know it's your own responsibility to participate, but still: Dress for North Eastern winter wind.

For this hike we will ***mostly follow the GR 512 and the Regional GR “Groene Gordel”.*** We’ll explore Grimbergen with its ***12th-century abbey and charming 18th-century Spanish facades*** on the church square. Along the way, we pass the ***MIRA public observatory, some historic watermills, peaceful parks and nature reserves***. We’ll enjoy the ***tranquility of the Sea Canal***, admire ***beautiful farms and country houses*** and take in ***sweeping views across serene fields and landscapes.*** ***After our hike*** we can continue our good habit of ***taking a nice beer/pancake/snack in a local pub*** in Grimbergen before returning to Brussels. **Please don't forget to pay Maikel a drink :-)** We will walk at ***an average speed of 5km/h*** both on paved and unpaved roads. ***I’ve never walked this road before*** so it’s ***possible there are some mistakes in the planning***. Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
