Expressions of Interest - Tramping New Zealand - Summer 2026
Expressions of Interest - Tramping New Zealand - Summer 2026
Hi All Having recently led a group of 9 in completing the Overland Track in Tasmania, I’m looking to expand my horizons and do my first international hike. Not too far, but thinking across the ditch to do some world class walks in New Zealand’s Southern Island. I’m very keen on the following Great Walks. 1. **Milford Track** \- Billed as ‘the finest walk in the world' \- Take a journey along valleys carved by glaciers\, wander through ancient rainforests and admire cascading waterfalls\. You’ll follow a historic route through Fiordland National Park\, part of Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area\, before reaching your final destination\, the spectacular Milford Sound/Piopiotahi\. 53.5km over 4 days/3 nights and staying in huts along the way. Hut Fees: $390 (2025 price) For further Information: [https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/milford-track/](https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/milford-track/) 2. **Routeburn Track** – The Routeburn Track is the ultimate alpine adventure, taking you through ice-carved valleys and below the majestic peaks of the Southern Alps/ Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. A short trip from bustling Queenstown, this Great Walk links Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks in Te Wāhipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Weaving through meadows, reflective tarns and alpine gardens, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular vistas over vast mountain ranges and valleys. 33km over 3 days. Hut Fees: $240 (2025 price) For further Information: [https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/routeburn-track/](https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/routeburn-track/) Backup option if one of these sells out could be the Kepler Track. 3 days, 60Km loop track. $240 NZD. Note that both of these hikes can be taken leaving Queenstown and I am envisaging a rest day in Queenstown between hikes to rest, recover, restock and sleep before the second hike, **Bookings for the Great Walks** go on sale for the Routeburn on the 22nd of May and Milford on the 28th May. I will be on-line to make the group bookings as soon as the bookings open and will do my best to secure the bookings as discussed above. I’m hoping to make a group booking for around 10 people on these dates, so if intending in coming I will need payment for the hut fees by the 20th May. An exact itinerary will be worked out once the huts are booked, although I am thinking of including a 2 night stay in Queenstown between hikes to rest, recuperate, eat and restock. **Approximate Major Cost:** $1854 - $2500 Refer to attached image showing price discovery as at 14/04/2025. Note this is just to give an idea on costs, actual costs will vary with exchange rates and also we may be able to organize group booking discounts etc. Also will depend upon accommodation and flights options to be discussed and considered as a group. I've assumed an early flight (6am, cheapest @ $375) and three nights budget accommodation in Queenstown. Happy to reconsider these options after further discussion with those that sign-up. Volunteers to help research/organize these options would also be awesome - divide and conquer so they say! Also expect bookings for Flights, Travel Accommodation to be organized via the Whatsapp group throughout June/July. I’m not sure if things will book out, so we will book early, as a group to make sure everything runs smoothly. Further payments will therefore be required as we organize these together. **Dates of Travel:** I understand that the ideal time to hike these tracks is in February, so my intention is to make the hut booking for Late February, Early March 2026. Exact dates to be confirmed once huts are locked in. Effort will be taken to avoid NZ school and public holidays. **Training and Lead-up Practice Hikes:** As with the Overland track I will organize a series of practice hikes in the months leading up to this hike. These will usually be scheduled for the first weekend of each month from Oct through to February and will be at destinations around Victoria, such as Wilsons Prom, Great Ocean Walk (partial) , Great South West Walk (partial), Grampians etc. ***If signing up for the New Zealand hike you must commit to coming to at least some of these lead-up hikes.*** This is to ensure that you have the right equipment, fitness level and attitude to make the New Zealand hike an enjoyable experience for everyone. **[Medical cover](https://www.comparethemarket.com.au/travel-insurance/medical-only/):** Australia and New Zealand have a [Reciprocal Health Care Agreement](https://www.comparethemarket.com.au/travel-insurance/reciprocal-health-care-agreement/) with each other, and will typically cover emergency medical treatment. Additional Travel Insurance may be considered. **To Register Your Interest:** 1. RSVP to this event in the meetup app, and 2. **IMPORTANT**: Join the following Whatsapp group created specifically to organizing this trip: [https://chat.whatsapp.com/H6T2pTK6e7c3LZJXGLQgFH](https://chat.whatsapp.com/H6T2pTK6e7c3LZJXGLQgFH) 3. **IMPORTANT**: Numbers are limited to approx. 10 people. These will be the first 10 people who confirm their intention to attend and who transfer me the money to be part of the group booking for huts. This needs to be done before the 20th May, **Cancelations:** Everyone will book their own flights, so cancellations for flights will be as per airline policy. I do suggest that we all travel together on the same flight. A number of group bookings will be made, including for the huts, and possibly also for accommodation and busses etc. If you are unable to attend every effort will be made to find a replacement and/or to organize refunds where possible, but this may not be possible if cancellations are made within the last month. **Questions:** Please post questions via the comments here, or to the Whatsapp group shown above. Look forward to some of your company on a new hiking adventure in 2026! Cheers Stephen Hallyburton **Disclaimer:** By signing up to this event you accept that you are solely responsible for yourselves and your guests. You agree that you are responsible for assessing your and fitness level before deciding to attend any event or activity. This is your perfect Sunday plan! 🎉 We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Melbourne Social Hike. A welcoming day out where the focus is all about fun, friendships, and fresh air. Whether you come solo or bring a mate, you’ll leave with new connections and memories! \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- 🚙 **Carpooling Makes It Happen** Wilderness Seekers Victoria runs on community spirit and carpooling is a big part of that. Every seat offered means another hiker can join the adventure. Less cars, easier logistics, more fun together. Carpooling is a great way to start the day by meet new people, share a few laughs, and arrive at the trail together. Drivers, your contribution makes a huge difference, and passengers, your gratitude keeps it all running smoothly. It’s simple, social, and one of the best parts of the Wilderness Seekers Victoria experience. 🚗🌿 \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- 👉 **Carpool Driver information** If you’ve got spare seats and don’t mind some company, offering a lift is one of the best ways to kick off the day 🚙💨. It makes the trip more fun, helps out fellow hikers who don’t have a car, and is an easy way to make a few friends before we even hit the trail. Plus, fewer cars means less parking stress and a smoother start for everyone. For passengers, it’s the easiest way to get to the trail, meet new people and enjoy the ride together instead of travelling alone. In our Wilderness Seekers Victoria community, many people are more than happy to help out those without cars it’s part of what makes these days feel so welcoming and connected. ✨ Best practice: Passengers should try to secure transportation before purchasing a ticket to avoid any last-minute stress. **Important Carpooling Note** Drivers and passengers should stick with the arrangements they make. We **do not recommend swapping drivers or cars**after you’ve agreed on a ride. If you do decide to change, please make sure **all parties are clearly informed and agree** to avoid confusion. If a driver forgets, gets mixed up, or doesn’t pick you up, Wilderness Seekers Victoria (and your driver) are **not liable** for any inconvenience caused. For this reason, it is best to keep things simple with the driver you first arranged with. In the transport chat, drivers will share their preferred pick-up locations often major CBD train stations like Parliament, Richmond, South Yarra, Southern Cross, or North Melbourne. For this hike, **the nearest station to the trail are** [Bacchus Marsh](https://maps.app.goo.gl/pEJSLbEFqUHnkMPB6 "https://maps.app.goo.gl/pEJSLbEFqUHnkMPB6")[ ](https://maps.app.goo.gl/g6hs2T9Jotv3Jg6E6 "https://maps.app.goo.gl/g6hs2T9Jotv3Jg6E6")though drivers may choose whichever spot is most convenient for them. Passengers can then join from those locations. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **🤩 Why Join?** 🌟 Make new friends in a super easy, zero pressure way 🌟 Enjoy nature and fresh air with great company 🌟 Friendly vibes full of laughs, chats and good times guaranteed 🌟 Your next hiking buddy might just become your next uni mate, housemate or travel buddy! \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- 🎟️ **Tickets:** **All tickets are $20 per person.** This helps cover: * Public liability insurance * A $2.40 contribution per ticket directly to Parks Victoria * Experienced guides with a tour operator license who know the trails well * First aid kit and safety equipment for the group 🚗 **Carpoolers Discount** If you’re driving and offer seats to passengers, your ticket is only **$5** 🙌. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **🥾 What to Bring:** 👟 Comfy hiking shoes 💧 2–3L of water 🥪 Snacks/lunch ☀️ Sun protection (hat, sunnies, sunscreen) 🦟 Bug spray (always a good idea) 🎒 Optional: hiking poles, wet weather gear/raincoat \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- 📌 **How It Works:** After purchasing your ticket, you’ll receive a link to our private Instagram group chat. Sunday Bus: Jan Juc to Anglesea - 13km and 16km - 1 Mar
Sunday Bus: Jan Juc to Anglesea - 13km and 16km - 1 Mar
**WALK DESCRIPTION:** The walk is part of the stunning Surf Coast Walk at the start of the Great Ocean Road. The **Easy-Medium Walk** starts from Jan Juc, a quiet coastal town near Torquay and follows the track that daring pioneer surfers carved through coastal scrub to reach the fearsome waves of Bells Beach. The section from Jan Juc to Bells is along a sandy track with high clifftops overlooking the gorgeous and at times wild Bass Strait which connects the Southern Ocean to the Tasman Sea. Some previous walkers have seen peregrine falcons gliding in the region, but this is rare. Maybe we will be lucky this time. At every lookout along the way there are stunning panoramic views up and down the coast and into the hinterland. This is the 'Golden Mile' of Victorian surfing with its reef breaks and brilliant surf relentlessly rolling in from the Southern Ocean. The **Easy Walk** starts from Bells Beach carpark. Bells is where the 'Rip Curl Pro' international surfing event is held every Easter. It attracts elite surfers from around the world and many Australian surfers have made their careers by winning the event. The next section takes us from Bells Beach to Point Addis. This beautiful section of the walk includes superb coastal and bush scenery. The walk passes Southside beach, another popular surfing beach and heads into the Ironbark Basin where there are the ruins of an old jarosite mine and provides stunning sea views through the bush. The walk continues through the ironbark forest and then heads back to the heathland along the cliff. A hill climb with great views precedes the walk to Point Addis. From Point Addis we go along the coast towards Anglesea with more gorgeous views and then inland to see lush heathland and maybe spot some Wallabies or Kangaroos. It has wide sandy beaches backed by crumbling limestone cliffs. We\`ll be keeping a safe distance from the cliffs! Point Addis Marine National Park is the third largest of Victoria's Marine National Parks and provides a protected habitat for many sea birds and mammals including Blue Wales and Southern Right Whales. The walk finishes in the Anglesea town centre where there are toilets and shops to buy snacks and ice-creams. A reminder to bring a change of footwear for the trip back, because dirty boots leave marks on the bus that our club pays to have cleaned. Please note that at this time of year there is always a possibility of encountering snakes, and appropriate leg covering is recommended. As the weather can be warm at this time of year, **please carry at least 2 litres of water.** . **DISTANCE(S):** 13km and 16km . **TOTAL ASCENT(S):** 450m Rise and 600m Rise . **GRADINGS:** Easy and Easy/Medium **Easy (E):** Walking mostly on tracks or in open country, with possibly some stretches of light scrub. Few hills and adequate rest stops. Distances may be up to 15km in flat open terrain but will be shorter if scrub or significant hills are involved. **Easy/Medium (E/M):** More consistent walking, mostly on tracks or in open country, but with some significant hills, probably some stretches of light scrub. Possibility of some rock hopping. Distances up to 19km but may be much shorter depending on the difficulty of the terrain. Reasonable lunch and rest stops. **.** **PLEASE NOTE:** Your RSVP on MeetUp lets us know who may be interested but does not add you to the booking list. To register and pay for the walk you must visit our clubrooms (details below). . **HOW TO BOOK AND PAY:** (a) Visit the Melbourne Bushwalkers' clubrooms on either of the two Wednesday evenings before the walk, speak to the leader and, if it is agreed to walk, make a payment to secure your place on the bus. (b) To cancel a Sunday Walk booking before 4pm on the Thursday before the walk, send a note to sunday@mbw.org.au. A credit will be issued for a future walk. (c) To cancel a Sunday Walk booking after 4pm on the Thursday before the walk contact the walk leader direct. You should be given the walk leader contact details at the time of booking. (d) The costs for the walk are $30 bus fare plus $10 visitor fee if you are not a paid-up Member of Melbourne Bushwalkers. . **OUR CLUBROOMS:** Our clubrooms are located at The Mission to Seafarers Victoria, 717 Flinders Street, Docklands. We are open Wednesday nights 6:30pm - 8.00pm. . **CONTACT US:** To contact us regarding this walk send an email to sunday@mbw.org.au. We do not regularly check the MeetUp site for messages and the above address will get a faster response. **.** **CAN I MEET AT THE START OF THE WALK?** No! Since Sunday Bus walks are generally walks starting and finishing at two widely separated locations we do not accept walkers meeting at the start of the walk. There is no way for them to get back to their transport. We can arrange for a pick-up and drop-off at a designated location along the route closer to Melbourne, however, the full bus fee is still payable since a seat has to be kept free on the bus. . **IMPORTANT TO KNOW:** Registration (membership) on Meetup is not the same as paid-up Membership of MBW. To become a paid-up Member with online booking and other benefits see: https://mbw.org.au/MBW_membership.php . **WHAT TO BRING:** A day pack containing: \* Lunch, a morning and afternoon snack. \* Full water bottle - we recommend 2 litres, more in warmer weather. \* An unlined waterproof jacket or cape, waterproof over-trousers (if your jacket is short). \* Whistle, pencil and paper. \* Personal and first aid items, including sun screen, lip screen, toilet paper, identification, Club green Health Card, some money etc. Note: The leader always carries a first aid kit. \* A change of footwear for the trip back. . **DO YOU HAVE COMPREHENSIVE AMBULANCE COVER?** The Club strongly recommends that all participants have comprehensive personal ambulance cover. . **MORE DETAILS:** The visit to the clubrooms on a Wednesday before a walk is to cover three things: (a) Provide background on the club and ensure all walkers are familiar with the safety and courtesy guidelines we adopt; (b) Meet with the leader of the walk who will be in the clubrooms to discuss any special features of the walk and ensure that adequate gear and fitness requirements are met. (c) Sign an Acknowledgement of Risk form and pay the visitor fee ($10) and bus fee ($30) to reserve a seat on the bus. No booking is accepted until the payment is received. . **DAY WALKS BY BUS** with Melbourne Bushwalkers: https://mbw.org.au/mbw_activities/walks/MBW_bus_walks.php
