Session #30 - Why Nations Thrive, Conquer… or Fail?
Session #30 - Why Nations Thrive, Conquer… or Fail?
*“Countries fail when extractive institutions fail to protect property rights and provide incentives for investment.”* *―* Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson - Why Nations Fail “*Ultimate explanations for broad patterns of history must be sought in environmental differences*.” *―* Jared Diamond - Guns, Germs, and Steel “*If we learn anything from the history of economic development, it is that culture makes all the difference*.” *―* David Landes - The Wealth and Poverty of Nations “*The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles*.” *―* Karl Marx - Capital: Critique of Political Economy **Session in english! Also available on [consciouspass.com](https://consciouspass.com/activity/philosophy-session-why-nations-thrive-conquer-or-fail-2026-06-04/) for Karma Points.** Why do some nations become rich, powerful and technologically dominant, while others stagnate, collapse or become colonized? This session is inspired by sometimes contradicting ideas and hypotheses from: * *Why Nations Fail* — by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson * *The Wealth and Poverty of Nations* — by David Landes * *Guns, Germs, and Steel* — by Jared Diamond * Materialist interpretations of history from Karl Marx * *Spain in front of Europe* \- ideas from Gustavo Bueno on empire and civilization\. **You do NOT need to have read any of the books**. The goal is not literary analysis, but philosophical confrontation between ideas. Of course, if any of the books is familiar to you or you like history, don't miss the session! We want to put into conflict some of the strongest explanations in history, economics and philosophy about the main drivers behind the success and failures of nations. *Is it geography? resources? institutions? culture/ religion? colonial dynamics? class emancipation? just luck?* **Introduction of guests (15 minutes)** We start with a short introduction of the topic and of the guests * Which main driver do you think has the most influence on the outcome for a nation? **Questions (1 hour and 45 minutes)** 1. Why did Europe industrialize before regions closer to Equator line? - 2. Can geography permanently trap nations? 3. If geography is destiny, how do we explain: North vs South Korea, or US vs Mexico? 4. Why did industrial capitalism emerge specifically in Protestant Northern Europe? 5. What is more important, “social trust”, or natural resources? 6. Is corruption cultural before institutional? 7. Can there be more extractive empires and more generative empires? 8. Was the Spanish Empire uniquely oppressive, or is it judged under Anglo-Protestant standards? 9. Why did Spanish America produce large mestizo populations while British colonies often remained more segregated? 10. Did the British Empire produce prosperity because of institutions — or because Britain industrialized first? 11. Why did Britain industrialize before Spain despite Spain’s enormous imperial wealth and institutional solidity? 12. Did empires help to civilize conquered nations, or mainly extract wealth and keep populations poor? 13. Were the Spanish as extractive as the British, Dutch, Portuguese or Belgians? Which European institutions promoted slavery and elimination of local populations and which fought against it? 14. Did capitalism require colonial oppression and slavery to emerge? 15. Or was colonial expansion itself a consequence of unequal development? 16. Are institutions genuine structures of cooperation, or masks for underlying economic power? 17. Did European powers become rich because they were more advanced — or become advanced because they extracted more? 18. If socialist states rejected colonial capitalism, why did many become authoritarian and economically stagnant? 19. Were socialist systems create what Acemoglu would call “extractive institutions”? 20. Is the United States more a generative empire, or more an extractive empire? *** **RSVP:** Please confirm your attendance here on Meetup OR [consciouspass.com](https://consciouspass.com/activity/philosophy-session-why-nations-thrive-conquer-or-fail-2026-06-04/) (get Karma Points for assisting!). In both cases, yield your space to another person in the waiting list. We welcome donations from 1.000 HUF (min 400 HUF) to keep the costs of the meetup. **If you order food, or alcohol-free wines, you dont need to donate for the group. Thank you!**
SEO Meetup #19: AI SEO workshop 2
SEO Meetup #19: AI SEO workshop 2
Előadók: Bartók Márk, Csabai Ádám, Papp Gábor (The Pitch).** **Program:** * 17:45 – 18:00: érkezés * 18:05 – 19:30: AI SEO workshop * 19:30 – 19:45: Q&A * 20:00-ig esemény zárás, kötetlen beszélgetés **Regisztráció:** Az eseményen való részvétel ingyenes, de a létszámkorlát miatt regisztrációhoz kötött. Regisztrálni a Meetup felületén tudsz. **Egyéb információk:** A terem befogadóképessége 50 fő.
\-\-\-\- Please note: This is a Hungarian-language event. The introductions at the beginning and the optional discussion at the end are held in Hungarian.
Thursday Morning Flow
Thursday Morning Flow
[Please register via this link if you’d like to join!✨](https://www.sanctuary.hu/service-page/thursday-morning-flow-08-15-en?referral=service_list_widget) This morning Flow class is a light, continuous practice designed to gently awaken and energize the body for the day ahead. We don’t stay in one pose for too long — movement is guided by the breath, creating a steady rhythm and a sense of flow throughout the class. The pace is soft and seamless, helping the mind settle while gradually building warmth, strength, and mobility. The practice supports releasing stiffness, increasing circulation, and creating space for clarity, focus, and a grounded start to the morning. We close the class with soothing stretches after the dynamic sequence, allowing both the body and nervous system to soften and reset before moving into the rest of the day. Each class follows a weekly changing theme, offering a fresh focus and a new experience every time you step onto the mat.
Men's Circle Of Excellence Gathering XIII
Men's Circle Of Excellence Gathering XIII
The Men’s Circle of Excellence Gathering, for men who seek truth, mastery, and a life beyond mediocrity. The goal is simple: to support each other in mastering mind and spirit, breaking free from comfort, and moving toward excellence in every area of life. Modern life offers endless distractions but little real connection. Too often, men walk the path of self-development alone, or struggle against the negative pull of today’s society. The Men’s Circle of Excellence was created to change that: to bring support, accountability, challenge, and community energy. We gather in person to share openly, confront fears, and inspire one another to reach higher. Here, power is rooted in virtue, strength is balanced with empathy, and ambition is guided by wisdom. How it works: • Welcome & introductions: Meet new members and reconnect with familiar faces. • Open sharing: Each man speaks about his current challenges, fears, or obstacles. • Honest reflections: The group responds with insight and encouragement. • Connection Time: After the circle, we'll have extra time to relax, talk, and build friendships. Recommendation: • Before the event, take some time to think about your current situation and what to bring into the circle. Limited to max. 8 men per gathering to keep the space focused, personal, and meaningful. Confirm your attendance to reserve your spot.

Man meets woman - the differences between men and women
Man meets woman - the differences between men and women
**"Man meets woman**" is *Yang Liu*'s pictogram book about gender differences that she experienced and put into a funny form for everyone to laugh and talk about. We will start out from watching her pictures (laughing) and discussing what they mean, how true they are and how much do we see them play a role in the everydays. Besides the picture book we go further discussing differences between men and women: the male and female brains, their ways of experiencing life and each other and the struggles and funny sides of dealing with these differences. Own experiences, funny examples, questions, and opinions are very welcome in this jaunty discussion! We hope to bring the two genders a little closer to each other on a lightsome evening of laughter and...surprises?
