Beaverdam Reservoir Park & Lark Brewing Co.
Beaverdam Reservoir Park & Lark Brewing Co.
We will be hiking the loop trail, (counter clockwise) around the BeaverDam Reservoir starting at the brand new Reservoir Park VisitorsCenter. Beautiful views of the water and varied woodland areas. This is an 7.5 MILE loop hike around one of Northern Virginia's largest bodies of water. The loop is mainly flat with a tiny hill or two. I've rated the loop moderate because the distance is 7.5 miles and we will be hiking about 22 minutes per mile - just under 3 miles per hour. After the hike we'll head over to Lark Brewing. 24205 James Monroe Hwy, Aldie, VA 20105 for food and beverages. I will make every effort for your safety. You are hiking at your own risk. Dogs are welcome on the hike as long as they are good with groups, friendly and you follow all leash laws. I like kids but this is an adult event so please no kids or any one under 21. We do start on time so please plan accordingly. Meet in front of the bathrooms by the parking lot. I will add a pic of the meeting point in the photo section. This will be a slow-paced hike. Please arrive 15 minutes early for this hike to allow time to get familiar with parking. We will meet at the East View Parking Lot. After the hike, we can check out the famous Sugarloaf Mountain Winery. The vineyard may possibly have a food truck on site on weekends. They also sell some packaged cheeses and charcuterie. You are welcome to bring your own picnic lunch, but no alcohol other than their wine is permitted on the property. It seems the lawn chairs/tables fill up quickly, so they suggest bringing a blanket or lawn chair to sit. Interesting facts: Sugarloaf is known as a monadnock, a mountain that remains after the erosion of the surrounding land. Here, that process took approximately 14 million years. At an elevation of 1282 feet, Sugarloaf stands more than 800 feet above the farmland below. The mountain and trails are maintained by Stronghold, Inc. a non-profit setup by Louise and Gordon Strong in 1946 to preserve the mountain so that it could be enjoyed by everyone. The mountain has many wonderful hiking trails that can be combined to create many different loops. Underwater Hockey (open to new players!)
Underwater Hockey (open to new players!)
New players are always welcome to come try it out! What you need: A bathing suit. Preferably something light and tight. We have extra gear for new players. But if you have your own pair of flippers, a snorkeling mask, and a snorkel then bring them along. Please bring this signed and completed form to practice: https://cdn1.sportngin.com/attachments/document/c7dc-2321473/USOA_Waiver_2022-07-07.pdf Unless you are already a member of USOA: https://www.underwater-society.org/page/show/4284471-usoa-registration To find us: You can tell the front desk that you are here for underwater hockey and they will let you in for free. You can ask them for help finding the pool. If no one is at the front desk just walk past it and there will be a set of stairs on the left. Take the stairs and take a right at the bottom of the stairs. The men's and women's locker rooms are straight ahead, and you will need to go through them to access the pool deck. Once you are out on the pool deck you will be exactly where we practice. Agenda: First 15 minutes: Arrival at the pool, getting gear from the shared gear bin, dividing into two teams, getting gear on. Minutes 15-30: Getting in the water, teaching any new players the basics Minutes 20-70: Scrimmage/practice. Minutes 70-75: Putting away club gear, putting the lane lines back in place, clearing the pool deck. (optional) afterwards: Go to a local restaurant for food, drinks, and socializing.
Mt Kilimanjaro Trek! One of the 7 Summits. Join us on this bucket list adventure
Mt Kilimanjaro Trek! One of the 7 Summits. Join us on this bucket list adventure
**Our Meetup is off to another hiking adventure! Mt Kilimanjaro, as the tallest mountain in Africa, is included in the 7 Summits of the world.** **It is a bucket-list item for all hard-core hikers and mountain lovers.** We did this trek with Meetup in the summer of 2024 and it was a true experience of a lifetime (see photos below) Let's get to some numbers. It is 5,895m/19,340ft BUT . . . our starting elevation for the trek is 3795m/12541ft As such elevation gain is 2100m/6799ft To compare Everest Base Camp trek, is about 2754m/9035ft elevation change. And Mt Whitney is about 1828m/6000ft elevation change. The key to being able to succeed in this endeavor lays in the route and the support system. We are taking the Lemosho Route via the Northern Circuit. The Northern Circuit route is the longest and newest of the seven established Kilimanjaro routes. It's one of the best routes because it has the best acclimatization profile. This results in one of the highest summit success rates. Add to that stunning views, and comparatively relaxed pace. It is also much less crowded than the other Kilimanjaro routes. As far as our support system: We will be accompanied by experienced guides, porters and cooks. They are certified, ensuring our safety and comfort. Porters will carry our gear. We will have a high ratio of guides to hikers. Our guides will go our pace and support each and everyone of us, regardless of fitness level and pace. In other words...you go your own speed and we all get there safe. More about our trek/trip. As with all our international trips, we picked the best season/time of year to go for weather and wildlife. Lemosho and Northern Circuit is a scenically spectacular and varied route. At the lower elevations it has an abundance of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, eland and lion which come over to forage during dry season. **Each of our trips is personally crafted to offer the best places and best use of time.** *But I don't have the needed gear?!* You don't need much more than the standard trekker's equipment. We will provide you with a list of what is already included and what can be rented there. *Does this include food?* All meals on the trek potion are included and a cook travels with us! *What is lodging like?* We are sleeping in new and comfortable tents (carried during the day by porters) *I am new at this.* That's OK. We do plenty of prep Zooms before we depart. And in California we have a number of local outdoor day or weekend outings you can test out with us. *How dangerous is this? What if I get sick or hurt?* We will be walking on an established, well used trail the entire time. **Our trip INCLUDES emergency insurance.** We are also Certified Wilderness First Responders and our guides are members of (AMREF) Flying Doctor. **Plain and simple, safety is our primary goal.** *How much does this cost?* **Kilimanjaro Mountain Trek $3950 per person, double occupancy. Land only (airfare not included). Solo supplement $600** Trip Cost includes: \- 9 nights accommodation \- 3 meals everyday on the trek \- All Fees & Entrances and Taxes \- Camping equipment such as tents\, tables\, chairs\. \- Lead Guide\, Assistant Guides\, Porters and Cook *RSVP to this event shows your interest, but does not hold your space.* ***The only way to secure your spot for this trip is a $300 deposit:*** ***[CLICK HERE FOR SECURE DEPOSIT LINK](https://www.paypal.com/instantcommerce/checkout/8P9NUAVQM8UEN)*** *Deposit is refundable up to 90 days before the departure (less PayPal fees).* *IF you need an airfare quote,* [Click here to message Anna](https://secure.meetup.com/messages/?new_convo=true&member_id=131297062) For more information about this or any of our other international events, fill out this form: **[INTERNATIONAL MEETUPS INFO REQUEST](https://forms.gle/cQdqYw74gAYqphXX8)** To see pictures from our Kilimanjaro adventure in 2024 [CLICK HERE](https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPkfkUp6sEZVQ-xse1di_K19d1QVmSb5KOLeIjynRoWGv_XFLXI8wBfT61XxAHavg?key=U2tKajBuOGRiZkxBOUtTUG1GbUVRVmlDaERCeG5n) We do a monthly Q & A Zoom: Meet others attending, be social, or come and get any questions answered. Potomac Paddle - Brunswick/Point-of-Rocks - Car shuttle (7 miles)
Potomac Paddle - Brunswick/Point-of-Rocks - Car shuttle (7 miles)
This is the absolute favorite trip for a few our members, and for good reason! Since I bet it will be a hot one, we'll do a car shuttle instead of biking the C&O this round. The trip is 7 miles downstream with some swirly bits and a few rocks, but not really anything that would count as rapids. Here's the itinerary (LOOK IN THE PHOTOS SECTION FOR A MAP): **Not later than 10:10am:** Arrive at Point-of-Rocks to load your boat onto the trailer. **10:30:** The shuttle caravan leaves promptly at 10:30 for Brunswick kayak launch or MARC Station. **11:15:** Launch our boats from the Brunswick Boat Ramp. **12:45:** We'll pull over to an island to have lunch. Bring lunch! **2:30:** We'll arrive at Point of Rocks. Everyone who drove the initial shuttle will jump back into a car to get back to Brunswick. **3:10ish:** The shuttle folks arrive back at Point-of-Rocks to load up their remaining boats. **3:30:** Ice cream at Rocky Point Creamery Point of Rocks Address: [3701 Canal Rd, Point of Rocks, MD 21777](https://maps.app.goo.gl/GLMTXLyaBZN8qyvB6) Brunswick Address: [100 S Maple Ave, Brunswick, MD 21716](https://maps.app.goo.gl/CrPtLZnjJCBm5tsR7) (UNDER the bridge) This is event is suitable for sit-on-top kayaks, canoes and touring/sea kayaks. Anyone using a recreational kayak should be experienced using their boat in mild currents. Paddle boards are welcome, but you need to be on the lookout for underwater obstructions (we've had members take a tumble previously when they hooked their skegs, they were both fine). Inflatable SUPs are allowed, but inflatable kayaks are not. Pedal kayaks are not at all recommended. This is a fairly complicated plan and requires all participants to arrive in the correct places at the correct times. Our shuttle caravan leaves at 10:30 , so please arrive with plenty of time to load your gear and get prepared. **We will not wait for latecomers and will not shuttle anyone who is not on the Attending list.**
