A Sci Fi/Fantasy Feedback Session
A Sci Fi/Fantasy Feedback Session
Join us at Craft Beer Co. Brixton for our structured Sci-Fi & Fantasy Feedback Session. A supportive, focused space where writers can share their work and receive constructive, thoughtful critique. These sessions are designed not only to help authors refine their writing but also to strengthen our community. Giving feedback is as valuable as receiving it: by learning to critique effectively, we sharpen our own editorial instincts and deepen our understanding of craft. Whether you’re submitting work or attending as a reader, this is a collaborative, growth-focused environment. **FOR THOSE SUBMITTING WORK** **We allow up to 4 people to submit their work** **for feedback. In order to submit please RSVP and send your submission to** **scififantasyauthors@gmail.com no later than the Sunday prior to the session** to give organisers time to review submissions and arrange critique groups in advance. *Priority for submission slots is given to those who have attended a previous session.* To ensure quality and fairness, submission guidelines are as follows: * **A short introduction (2–3 paragraphs max.) explaining:** * The context and status of the piece (early draft? polished?) * What kind of feedback you’re looking for * **An excerpt (chapter or short story) of up to 3,000 words** * +10% flexibility allowed * Strict cut-off beyond that **FOR THOSE PROVIDING FEEDBACK** Please RSVP and read the “How to Give Feedback” document that will be shared prior to attending. * Bring a device suitable for reading the submitted piece * Be prepared to engage respectfully and constructively * There is no expectation to read anything in advance. All reading takes place during the session itself. We begin with dedicated silent reading time, ensuring that everyone engages with the piece equally and no one feels pressure to prepare outside the session. Just show up ready to read, think, and contribute. **SCHEDULE** Attendees will be placed into small critique groups of 5–6 people, each with an experienced facilitator to guide discussion and manage time. **6:30–6:45pm** – Arrival, drinks & group seating **6:45–7:30pm** – Silent reading & note-taking **7:30–8:00pm** – Structured feedback delivery **8:00–8:30pm** – Open roundtable discussion & author questions Each participant will have up to 5 minutes to share feedback during the structured critique section. Authors listen without interruption, with space for clarifying questions later in the roundtable. Whether you’re looking to polish a chapter, test an opening, or strengthen your editorial instincts, these sessions are an opportunity to grow together. RSVP early, as places are limited to ensure productive group sizes. If you can no longer attend, please update your RSVP.

Blood on the Clocktower @OtterChaos
Blood on the Clocktower @OtterChaos
Join OverBoard to play the brilliant social deduction game Blood on the Clocktower in person at the brand new board game cafe Otter Chaos in Brixton. If you haven’t heard of Blood on the Clocktower before it is an evolution of classic party games like Mafia/Werewolf where a hidden evil team takes on the good team by lying and killing. The good team has a few tricks up their sleeve but will have to work together to deduce who the evil doers are in their midst. **This is a beginner friendly event so no experience with the game is necessary.** Please note that a gaming cover charge of \~£5 will be payable by each attendee to the venue so that we can make use of the space. We also encourage you to buy food and drink from the bar so we are supporting the business (I can highly recommend their pizzas!) If you want to know more about the rules of the game check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-aZP47Nm9g

Clear Skies, Tooting Common
Clear Skies, Tooting Common
A stargazing meet this week on Tooting Common near Tooting Bec; skies forecast clear until late by the BBC. If noone responds I'll stay home, so do RSVP here or message me to confirm. If you can't come, think of it as a reminder that you ought to be able to see some stars/planets and such on the night (and probably Thursday too). We can meet in the usual pub for this venue - the Rose and Crown, for a little while before heading to the common, or coordinate somewhere if you're happy to/there's only one or two of you (easier if we've met before at other events). **DO dress up warm, it'll be chilly, especially add another layer** than what you think you need, if you've not done this before and aren't used to planning for time standing relatively still/sitting in the middle of a big open space under clear skies. Hat/gloves/warm socks worth adding too. If you can only show up later, again make sure it's happening still, but we'll likely be directly diagonally opposite the pub, but might also consider the cricket court next to the car park on Dr. Johnson Avenue - approx. 10-15 minute walk, if we're all able to. Happy to help you find us - take note of my phone no. (in event location details/"how to find us" short text) or comment here and I will try to notice Meetup comments/messages but SMS text messages might be the best way to reach the host (John), details alongside the location info. **Targets**! People were talking of a planetary procession again like last year, but the last of the winter sights like Orion might be best early in the evening. Jupiter is the brightest planet at the moment, in good skies a medium sized telescope like the organiser's will show the two redder cloud belts; Venus sets almost at the same time as the sun, Uranus is there but hard to find. Saturn is hiding for a few months, behind the sun. Besides this lots of other options so am sure we can find several targets to examine and explore. I (John) will bring my little (but nicely portable) telescope. If you have equipment suitable that you can bring, please do - binoculars count too (I *might* bring a pair of those too). Don't worry if you don't have anything, we'll share views with you and I can answer many questions beginners often have. Regular torches can ruin our night vision - if you have red-light versions or can filter them (or turn them off as you get nearer), that will make them ok to use while in the group, but you don't need one. Please update your rsvp and/or comment here or message me if you change your mind about coming, I might message you to check if it looks like only one or two are coming so please be able to check messages closer to the time; it's polite and avoids delaying the rest of us enjoying the stars/planets or wasting our time. If there's no other RSVPs I'll still probably be stargazing a bit from home, so its important to use meetup and let me know or RSVP and allow a bit of time for replies if you want to check on us/where we are. My phone no. (use text messages if you can't get me directly) is listed in the location details how to find us for the event. **Need help transporting anything?** I can offer to help you get any equipment onto the common from the roads/parking spaces nearby, perhaps others there too, if you're ok with that.

Join us as we get together to see Ryan Gosling and Sandra Huller in the highly anticipated sci-fi adventure, PROJECT HAIL MARY! The film is based on the best-selling novel of The Martian and follows a man who awakens on a spacecraft before realizing his mission to save Earth. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event: DESCRIPTION: A science teacher wakes up on a spaceship, light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission to save the Earth. The film is directed by the filmmaking due Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 and 22 Jump Street, Into and Across the Spider-Verse) and is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir (The Martian). The film stars Ryan Gosling, Sandra Huller (Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest), Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub and Ken Leung. TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VYsnngkS_U BUZZ AND REVIEWS: The buzz and reviews for PROJECT HAIL MARY are off-the-charts good! The film is earning a 95% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where critics call it an “old school blockbuster crowd-pleaser” and “a new sci-fi classic!” It’s “deeply hopeful,” well-acted,” funny,” “dramatic,” and “exceptionally rousing throughout!” Others call it “something truly magical” and one that “we’ll be talking about this one for decades to come!” And I believe Slashfilm says it best: “It will lift up and squeeze your heart, crack you up with laughter, and give you a sense of hope and wonder in a way that few movies have been able to inspire.” MOVIE PLAN: Please purchase your ticket for the 2:30pm SuperScreen DLX showing and meet in the lobby area between 2:05 and 2:15pm!
